Rams safety Eric Weddle was cleared from the NFL’s concussion protocol and is expected to play against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at the Coliseum, coach Sean McVay said Friday.

“I feel as normal as I’ve ever felt,” Weddle said after practice.

Weddle, 34, was injured during the first half of the Rams’ season-opening victory over the Carolina Panthers when he attempted to tackle running back Christian McCaffrey, who was attempting to hurdle Weddle. McCaffrey’s left knee hit Weddle in the head, causing a bloody cut that Weddle said required seven stitches.

A sharp edge inside the first layer of his helmet padding, and the impact of McCaffrey’s knee against his head, might have caused the cut, Weddle said.

“Kind of a perfect-storm type stuff,” he said.

Weddle was prone on the turf for several moments after the play. He eventually sat up, blood running down his neck and onto his jersey before he was carted from the field.

“That first couple minutes, I don’t remember anything,” he said, “but then after that I was coherent. I knew the score, knew who we were playing, all the simple questions you ask to see if someone is there or not.

“Like, I knew where I was at. The whole thing I was wondering was if I made the tackle or not.”

A Rams representative called his wife, Chanel, when he was taken to the locker room, Weddle said. His family had been attending church when the game began.

“She didn’t see it live, thank goodness, but she knows,” Weddle said. “She played college sports. She knows what this game is all about.”

McCaffrey expressed concern after the game, Weddle said.

“When you see an injury like that, you’re always hoping for the best because we are a brotherhood and we compete, but … you never want to see someone hurt,” Weddle said.

Weddle said he got “knocked out” and suffered a concussion in 2012 while playing for the Chargers against the Baltimore Ravens. He played the next week.

The injury against the Panthers shortened Weddle’s Rams debut. Before the collision with McCaffrey, he called defensive signals and had made six tackles, the kind of effort the Rams anticipated when they signed the 12-year veteran as a free agent.

“I was flying around,” he said. “I felt like I was 25. Not a care in the world.”

This is interesting and I noticed it as well. Could be leftover resentment from the Kaep situation, but I believe that has faded a lot.

More likely the high ticket prices, easy streaming of every game in minutes, and proliferation of big screen setups. Just not as fun to expend 5 or 6 hours total for a live game vs home in most cases. This gets more pronounced every year.

San Francisco 49ers fueled by Baker Mayfield's pregame snub

It would be an exaggeration to cite Mayfield's snub of Sherman and fellow captain DeForest Buckner as the driving force behind the 49ers' 31-3 beatdown of the Browns in front of 70,042 fans and a "Monday Night Football" audience, but it was a topic of discussion among the Niners before, during and after the game. And Sherman, who intercepted a Mayfield pass less than two minutes into the first quarter -- setting the stage for the quarterback's long, miserable night -- was eager to elaborate when he and I spoke alone at his locker about 20 minutes after the carnage was complete.

"What's amazing, and annoying, was him not shaking hands at the beginning," Sherman said. "That's some college s---. It's ridiculous. We're all trying to get psyched up, but shaking hands with your opponent -- that's NFL etiquette. And when you pull bush league stuff, that's disrespectful to the game. And believe me, that's gonna get us fired up."

"Respect the game," Sherman said, referencing Mayfield's pregame behavior. "You can have rivals, but pay your respect in that moment -- especially when you're young.

"He hasn't earned anything in this league. How many games has he won? He's acting like he was the MVP last year. If (Patrick) Mahomes did that, it would be one thing. But he would never do that, because he has too much respect for the game.

"And when you see a guy who doesn't? You humble him every chance you get. Because eventually, he will have respect for the league -- or he'll be out of it."

Mayfield is an entitled asshole who has thrown twice as many interceptions as touchdowns. He writes checks with his mouth that his arm cannot cash.

He keeps this shit up and he won't last long in this league.

If Kap gets signed, I'm out. This was my first year back after 2.5 out. Tentative, as I suspected the league was just playing us, as most every institution in the country is leftist now.

But here we are again. I see the league scheduled his workout for a Saturday when teams are travelling, to keep it on the down low. But the reality is they coordinated a mass workout event for him? He doesn't even have to seek out his own audience? Incredible.

But regardless of when the workout, I suspect some team will sign him, partially using this opening facilitated by league as cover.

Iceaxe

I'd be surprised if Kaepernick gets signed. Professional sports is all about winning in the end and Kap doesn't help that. If teams thought they could win with Kaepernick, or that he could increase their chance of winning, he would already be on someone's payroll.

I'll say the same thing I said 2 years ago. Why would you hire Kapernick when there are better QB2's available for less and without the headaches.

Now if the NFL kicks in something on the side he might get signed....

I've decide Kaepernick is a total dumbass.... the biggest problem with Kaepernick, outside of him being just a mediocre QB, is teams see him as a chemistry disrupting drama queen... so the NFL goes out of its way to give him one last chance at the league, and Kaepernick immediately turns the tryout into a disruptive drama filled dog and pony show...

The NFL is getting good down the stretch. The 49ers are playing the Ravens this week and that will be a great matchup.

I think it’s going to be tough for anyone to get past the Pats defense. Except maybe the Ravens, who gave them their only loss.

I like it! I would be good with any of those QB’s as Super Bowl winners. Not sure who I would prefer. Rodgers would be getting his second, while all the others guys, it would be their first trip.

I guess I would probably root for the Chiefs just to see Andy Reid get his first Super Bowl. He has earned it.

There are 5 Heisman Trophy winners in this game. Crazy! Can you name them?

Btw...the Titans just won back to back playoff road games in New England and now Baltimore.

The Accadacca curse continues to haunt teams deep into the playoffs...

I think I'll place a bet on Green Bay as Accadacca has all but assured their victory...

Texans defense is gassed. They’re going to lose for sure. Chiefs defense isn’t too much better either. You may be right about the 49ers.

accadacca
01-12-2020, 02:24 PM
Yeah agreed. The Titans are looking pretty complete as well. They are a buzz saw that nobody wants to meet right now. Derek Henry is a BEAST! Not sure if the KC defense can stop him. 400 yards in 2 games!!

41 unanswered points for KC and there is still over 6 minutes left in the 3rd.

Total calapse by the Texans after the missed fake punt.

The Chiefs and 49ers (home teams) are favored by 7.5 points. Will the Titans or Texans pull off an upset?

Titans are tough coming off the ravens win.

I'd rather see KC in the SB but they'll have to earn the trip..

If these guys could catch half the passes that Mahomes throws they’d be up by 30 points. I hope the Chiefs win, as their fans suffered for so long.

KC and the 49er's.... it would be a changing of the guard with the new young gunslingers going head-to-head in what could become a war over the next decade.Looks like I got the Superbowl matchup I predicted/hoped for back on December 6th :-)

Jeez...anybody’s guess. If the 49ers can contain Mahomes, then I’d give them the best chance. They cannot allow him to scramble around like he does. That kid is damn good.

Should be an awesome game.

accadacca

Yeah, I see it as the Chiefs offense against the 49ers defense. Can they slow down Mahomes, Kelce, Hill and the rest? The Chiefs contained Henry pretty well, so can they stop the run, but what about Kittle?

I think the 49ers have a more complete team, but I’m rooting for the Chiefs and who knows if anybody can stop their offense.

I'm cheering for the Chiefs, but they need to stop putting themselves in big holes to start the game. The last two weeks they started out 0-24 and 0-17 before getting their shit together.
