Anyone who has studied great ancient civilizations can see the writing on the wall. The only difference is today's computers have speeded time up to where everything is now measured in dog years.

I dunno, both my boys aren't the smartest of cats (as am I) but I told them at an early age to chase a dollar by working really hard. Good things will come to them. My oldest is now a Supervisor at a Mister Carwash, while the youngest just does odd jobs. I told both they could live rent free for as long as they want and save. Both have hefty savings and my oldest bought his own car at 18. When he asked me for a co-signer I said "do it on your own". I was pretty shocked he got the loan but he's got the car half way paid off.

I have only three real requirements for my Son's.

1) Show up 10 minutes early to work
2) Work hard
2) Be nice to coworkers and those you work for

There is something to be said for doing it on your own. My boys are light years ahead of their peers.

They still play video games all the time when they are here but when it comes to working and making money.... they get it. I'll let them find the rest of their way but I'm certain I did my part because I've done that since day 1. The other thing, both are barely on social media, my youngest hates it. Again I keep it very simple with my 2 boys:

1) Show up on time
2) Work really hard
3) Be nice to coworkers and customers

I mix in a “let water roll off your back” now and then. Maybe it’s maturity, maybe it’s just a solid upbringing cause I had parents who espoused this philosophy or maybe I was just born with street smarts? It just seems so simple to me. I look around and so many people are just a mess making basic decisions and they assume the fetal position when the first thing doesn’t go their way. I don’t get it.

I'll be honest. I'm not impressed with that new rule. What a bunch of woosies we're raising that they can't even go anywhere without talking to their parents for a week?

Whether you agree with the church and their teachings or not, I always thought that sending the kids out into the world to work for 18 to 24 months was a great thing. I learned a TON about how the world works and how to deal with issues on my own from that experience. I had to learn to get along with people that were nothing like me. I had to learn a language and see what it's like to be in a place where nobody knew what the heck I was talking about. I had to learn to appreciate and eat other people's food that I had never seen or heard of before. Sometimes while they skipped the meal themselves because they only had enough for the missionaries and there wasn't enough for them to eat also.

Talk about a growing experience. I came back a totally different person. More confident and more sure of myself and who I am. I'm so glad I didn't get to talk to my family every week. That would have ruined, or at least watered down all those experiences I had. It would not have been as fulfilling.

IT's the end of an era. One where at the age of 18 or 19 kids could stand on their own and do hard things. I'm incredibly sad about this.

Not sure where to post this, but this seems as good a place as any.

I found out this week that a coach in my 7 year old's Little League actually hired an attorney and threatened to sue the league and the league president because he wasn't allowed to convert his entire team to an All-Star team. The league has an A, B and C team and had already selected the head coaches for the 3 teams, when this coach came and said he'd help with the A team, but they needed to take 9 of his kids. He was told that there would be tryouts and the coaches would pick the teams but that they really didn't want more than 3 or 4 kids from any one team on any of the All-Star teams anyway, so it wouldn't happen. So the coach did what any lunatic would do and hired an attorney. The pres got a letter threatening this and that and demanding league and personal taxes from him. He didn't want that headache so ended up just giving him the B team. I'd expect this level of insanity with a comp team maybe, but this is rec league baseball with 7 and 8 year olds. Overzealous sport parents have to be the worst, but at least they are good for a laugh.

So true. I'll be the first to admit that as a very competitive person with a very competitive son, I do have to occasionally check myself and the kid, but I like to think I keep it all in the sane realm. It can sometimes be a fine line between teaching the kids the value of busting their asses for a goal, but also that losing is not the end of the world and is all part of the game.

On the other side of things I am always puzzled by the parents who sign their kid up for sports and then obviously spend 0 time practicing with them at home.

Haha. I totally forgot about the half sticks of gum and popsickles. My mom would buy a pack of gum and every piece that came out of that thing would be torn in half as she gave them to us.

And the popsickles would be broken in half on the edge of the counter and one stick given to me and the other one to my brother.

Those popsicles were made to be broken on the countertop edge, that's how I grew up. Try to break them by hand and somebody gets the broken half in sections

I'll guarantee you that's the dad of one of the kids. And I'm guessing mom is taking the picture and that's why she has all the neighborhood kids lined up like soldiers....

Funny thing is I remember my dad doing the exact same thing when we were doing the exact same thing. The day we added a landing ramp to the equation my dad just told us to go put on our motorcycle helmets if we were going to use a landing ramp....

FWIW - Our take-off ramp was 4 car tires high and our landing ramp was 2 tires high. I remember it like it was yesterday. We also used a Honda 50 as the tow-in vehicle so we could get up to about 30 mph (fast as the 50 would go) for take-off. Wish I had pictures of it. I do still own the Honda 50.
