Only down side is Washington and USC on the road. But -- Washington will be without Browning and Gaskin, so we might actually have a shot at redemption.

"It's great to have Sione back in our program," said Whittingham. "In his playing days he was an outstanding defensive tackle here at Utah and had a lengthy and successful NFL career as well. We are also excited about the impact he will have in our recruiting."

I wish Troy Taylor was coming back and Utah would be a big favorite to win the South. As it is Utah will most likely be installing the third new offense in four years. There is such a huge learning curve with a new offense. It seems Utah was just starting to understand Taylor's offense and he's gone.

I'm not sure what to make of Andy Ludwig coming back. When he was originally with Utah I never thought highly of his play calling. But the revolving door of OC's after him made Ludwig look like a rocket scientist.
The years between Ludwig and Taylor were pretty dismal. I'm just curious what Utah is going to do with their offense. The Utes are returning an extremely talent team next year and I'd had to see it all wasted installing a new offense.
uintafly
01-11-2019, 09:26 AM
Ludwig was the guy we Ute fans all loved to hate, but if you look at the #'s he was by far the best OC Whit has had. Granted, he was here at a time when we weren't playing the same level of competition as we are now. But he also didn't have the same talent level as we have now. Luckily we start next year against a team that really belongs at the FCS level.

After the parade of OC's Utah has had I've come to believe the problem with the offense is Whitt. He is just so conservative.
Norm Chow was good, but he also faced a nearly impossible task. Playing P5 schools with mid major talent and depth.

Typically yes, but that’s not what I saw in the Holiday Bowl and throughout the year. They seemed to keep their foot on the gas. Which did not work in the bowl game.

I think Shelley is going to be hard to beat out as QB1 in 2020. Shelley has a great arm, big game experience, and he doesn't get rattled. Plus I expect to see Shelly continue to improve over the coming year. The one advantage Rising has is all Utah QB's will be learning a new system this year.
The big question this year is how many games until Huntley is hurt?

Season ticket pricing just came out. Prices went up again of course. They no doubt see a waiting list a mile long and a strong secondary market and know they can get it. I'll still be in for my 3 seats, but as I get older and lazier I am losing the desire to go to live games. I am considering selling the whole season as a package deal this year. Make a few bucks, but still keep the tix in my name for future years.

Utah picked to win the South again this year, and many pundits have picked Utah to finish in the top 20 and end up in the Rose Bowl.
Aside from this, some even better news is that Washington and Washington State are replacing key players; Jake Browning is gone (although Gaskin is back as a Senior :angryfire:), and Mustache Minshew for WSU is also gonzo.
Some really bad news is that Utah has to replace three spots at OL. Utah's offensive line was mediocre at best last year, which is one of the reasons why Tyler Huntley was chronically injured. The last thing Utah needs is an even weaker O-line than what they had last year.

Can Utah Football adjust to no longer being the underdog? The Utes enter the 2019 season as a clear favorite to repeat as Pac-12 South champions. Many key playmakers return on both sides of the ball, led by quarterback Tyler Huntley, running back Zack Moss, and receiver Britain Covey.
Huntley, Moss, and Covey all suffered season-ending injuries down the stretch a year ago. Utah's offense ran as smooth as a new car engine when these players were at full strength. They should shine under new offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig, who is returning for his second stint under head coach Kyle Whittingham. Ludwig served as OC from 2005-08.
The schedule sets up well for Utah to make another title run. The Utes have a pair of tough road games at USC and Washington, but will host five Pac-12 opponents in Salt Lake City this fall. They also drop Oregon and Stanford off the schedule in favor of Oregon State and California.

Damnit we had such a rock solid special teams unit there for such a long time. It's gonna be difficult to adjust to life without great kickers. But hopefully we won't need a good field goal kicker.
Sucks that half the team went to go play for the Seattle Seahawks...

I really thought we would be OK at kicker this year with Chayden Johnston, but he suddenly retired from football on April 18th. Chayden actually beat out Gay and started one game in what was both their first years. But Chayden missed a field goal that first game and Guy got the call on the next kick and it was all over. At the time Chayden was a freshmen so I know the pressure of that first D1 kick got to him.
We have another Aussie for punter so we should be pretty solid there.

"Unfortunately, a couple days ago, Manny informed us that he is retiring from football. He's got a business opportunity that he felt was too good to pass up and the opportunity was for right now," Whittingham said. "He is exiting football and starting a business career. We wish him the best, hate to see him go. We were excited about what he was going to bring to the table this season."
Bowen's decision came out of the blue for the program.
"It surprised us completely, because there was no hint or anything out of the ordinary all through summer. All of the sudden, it just came up," Whittingham said.

Steele: Utah's defensive line ranks atop big boys Alabama, Clemson
1. Utah Utes
The Utes continue to produce elite defensive lines, as this position is the primary recruiting emphasis here. This season is no different, as all four starters return after allowing just 100 yards per game on the ground (No. 5 in FBS) while collecting 37 sacks. Defensive end Bradlee Anae (eight sacks in 2018) and defensive tackles Leki Fotu and John Penisini are listed as either first or second on my All-Pac-12 preseason team, with each player likely having a future in the NFL.

I followed up by asking Covey when he’s going to be back to his 100 percent, sprinting, Britain Covey self: “There are times when I feel like it, for sure.” He added he anticipates being out there and available next week against BYU.

rockgremlin
09-15-2019, 10:42 PM
^^^ Tough call. History is on USC's side since Utah hasn't ever won in the Colosseum. They got close in 2017 when Troy Williams blew that late game 2-pt conversion. Huntley was out with an injury that game. Utah was really close but lost in the final seconds. Today's team is probably better than that one, and the Trojans are probably worse than they were two years ago, so I've gotta give it to Utah.
Utes 27

I can hear it now...
If Utah loses in the Colosseum this Friday, every Zoober from here to Kolob will be boldly and loudly proclaiming that BYU is actually the better team since they beat USC.
I don't think Utah will lose to USC this week, but there are several things going against Utah in this game:
1. History - Utah is winless in USC's house, and all the players know it. There's a bit of a mental block there not allowing Utah to get over this losing streak in the Colosseum. It should give the USC players a shot of confidence knowing that they own Utah at home.
2. USC rarely loses 2 in a row -- especially at home. USC's recent woes can either depress their team or inspire it. We'll know which when they take the field this Friday.
3. Redemption -- USC might be playing with a chip on their shoulder, wanting to redeem themselves from last week and show everybody that all is still good in Trojan-Town.
Personally, I think the BYU game exposed USC. It laid bare the glaring ineptitude of the coaching staff at USC, and confirmed what many Trojan fans suspected all along -- that USC is overrated this year, and Clay Helton is not the right man for the job. After Utah beats USC this week, the Trojans will lose at Washington the following week, and then again at Notre Dame the week after that. They could be sitting at 2-4 at the midpoint of the season, at which point I'd be shocked if Clay Helton was still on the Trojan payroll.
All of this illustrates just how crappy Stanford is this year as well.

^^^ No way in hell USC loses 4 in a row as you predict. They might have shitty coaching, but they are always one of the most athletically talented teams in the country. The worst that will happen is they go 1-3 over this stretch, your job is to pick the sacrificial lamb.

Reports: Utah football to play Florida in 2022, 2023 and drop BYU from schedule
SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah football program has reportedly scheduled a home-and-home series with SEC Blue Blood Florida, according to a report out of Florida.
Pat Dooley, a reporter for gatorsports.com, tweeted Monday afternoon that Florida has scheduled a nonconference matchup with Utah for the 2022 and 2023 season.
Utah would travel to Gainsville, Florida, in 2022 and Florida would travel to Salt Lake City in 2023. The 2023 game would be the first for an SEC school to play in Salt Lake City. Previously, Arkansas was scheduled to be the first SEC program to travel to Salt Lake City with their scheduled game at Rice-Eccles Stadium in 2026.
Neither Florida or Utah have confirmed the report.
Utah’s nonconference schedule for both 2022 and 2023 are already filled out with teams. Barring the Pac-12 changing its nine-game conference slate, Utah is set to get out of its contract with BYU, according to Steve Bartle of utezone.com.
That would mean Utah would likely play Florida on the road on Sept. 3, 2022 and return to Salt Lake City on Sept. 16, 2023.
The 2022 matchup with Florida would be the second time ever the two programs have met. Utah previously played Florida on Nov. 19, 1977, a 38-29 loss on the road. The Utes currently hold a 3-9 record against the SEC, with its most notable win coming against Alabama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl.

Utah will drop out of the rankings after this weekend.

Utah's defense has never been good at stopping the Air Raid Offense and after last week I don't see that changing any time soon. USC now runs the Air Raid and scorched Utah with a 3rd string QB that had only ever thrown 12 times in a game. Utah made USC's QB3 look like a Heisman candidate.

Totally agree. I was really stoked to see him back in the lineup, but his presence on the field might actually be a hindrance - especially when his backup (Samson Nacua) went off for 90 yards and a TD. Covey hasn't produced anywhere near those numbers all season.

Utah could easily end up 10-1 or 9-2 and still get shutout of the PAC Championship Game and a shot at the Rose Bowl.
It appears the Ducks pretty much clinched the North yesterday, it would take an epic calapse to stop them now.

I think there are plenty of opportunities for the Trojans to lose left on the schedule. I could see them losing any one of the following games:
Nov 2 - vs Oregon
Nov 9 - @ Arizona State (Tempe is a tough place to win)
Nov 16 - @ Cal
Who knows, they could lose the final game against UCLA since the Bruins always get up to play the Trojans. Another thing to consider is that USCs defense is really banged up these days. They're nursing a lot of injuries right now.
And if Utah is capable of playing at Seattle like they played last night (minus the stupid mistakes) then I think Washington is in trouble.

Q: Why wouldn't Moss even be mentioned even though he plays in a top tier conference against top tier opponents?
A: Because he plays for Utah, and the only people who care about Utah athletics are people who live in Utah.

How does his 2019 stats compare to the top backs in the nation? I have no idea...haven’t looked.
OK -- So since I'm a numbers nerd, I took a little time a surfed around the NCAA statistics website to run down some numbers. A really user friendly website allows anyone to search any statistical category really fast. I took the original 15 on the list from that website that I posted earlier, and threw all of the numbers into a table.
Table A shows the raw data for all players on that list so far this year.
Table B shows those same players ranked according to TDs over the same period.
The orange highlighted numbers are PAC12 players. It appears through this exercise that Moss is the leader in the PAC12, although there are more prolific players outside of the conference that almost double Moss's output -- Wisconsin's Johnathan Taylor for example.
I think it's safe to say that Moss is the best Running Back this side of the Rockies.
