We need a General thread about this years snow! Anything and everything.

Kaysville had 5” of snow out of this latest storm.

What did you guys get?

I heard South Jordan got over a foot? And central mountains got a lot too.

And Ogden...rockgremlins favorite...was just a skiff. [emoji23][emoji867]

10" at Alta this morning. Super light, dry blower pow is exactly how I like to start my week. Yesterday was cold but the minion handled it like a trooper. Can't believe how much good skiing there has already been this year. I've got 10 days in the books and at least 7 of them had fresh snow. Hopefully it keeps up.

Looks like any photo I take vertically ends up posting sideways. Anyone know how to fix that?

:lol8: Yeah when we moved in our neighbors all laughed at our snow shovels. "You're gonna need to buy a SNOW BLOWER up here in North Ogden-land." They all said...

In two years I have yet to see any more than 2 inches on my driveway and that's including yesterday's wintery blast. We're cursed. If you're ever sick of the snow just let me move in next door - the clouds will dry right up.

I'm in South Jordan. We've had 6 inches over the past few days.

I'm glad I finally got the cover put on my toy hauler on Saturday night.

@Accadaca, where are you in SoJo? I'm near the Glenmore Golf Cousrse and I have about a foot of snow. My Audi is entombed in the back driveway, with a foot of snow atop the car cover that is likely now frozen to the Audi!

Yesterday's storm brought a sizeable amount of water for the central and southern part of the state.

I heard Brighton received over a two feet of snow and Zion, near the Subway trailhead, received about 8" of snow.

All totaled we got close to 16 ~ 18 inches at our place. When all the shoveling was complete the snowdrifts were piled up almost chin deep everywhere. The snow was extremely dense and heavy as well. Like shoveling wet concrete. I watched as the branches from the neighbors trees snapped under the weight of the snow.

A few years ago when we got monster snow and nobody could get rid of it, and the street crews just kept pushing it back over the mailboxes and back into our driveways, the Mail Lady and I had a few "exchanges" via written letters in my mailbox, talking about how I had to keep the mailbox clear or I would no longer receive my mail.

I wrote back and said I was ok with that.

Then I got a notification from the city after she tattled on me, saying it's my responsibility to keep the mailbox clear, and I responded by saying it was their city drivers that pushed the snow in front of the mailbox. It was the thick concrete snow that a snowblower can't touch. Shouldn't the city snow removal and the post office be on the same team?

This was also when the news would have features telling us it's illegal to push our snow out into the road, but it's perfectly fine for the plows to barricade our driveway with a 3 foot ice wall, 5 feet out into the street.

I caved and just dumped 4 bags of salt right there in front of the mailbox, basically because my wife was worried our internet would get shut off because we didn't receive the bill. This was before we did much online.

:roflol:Great story.

I'm with you -- the hypocrisy within the city "services" really bothers me. So they can just barricade us in, with the expectation that we're all going to have snow blowers and strong backs to dig our way out. But what about all the elderly and/or invalid folks out there who can't physically remove the snow -- I guess those types just don't get mail until the Spring then huh?

4 bags of salt -- Lol my passive aggressive nature would've prompted me to do something very similar.

I hope this winter keeps pummeling the Pine Valley mountains (north of St. George) so that the Gunlock Reservoir can overflow that causeway, now that I have a nice camera and a great drone for a once a decade event it seems. :crossingfingers:

YES!!!! I've been there three times over the last two years and have yet to see it overflow. The Spring - Summer of 2017 it got REALLLLY close. In fact the water level crept up the west dike a ways before receding. I think I posted a TR about it...

Ya, it’s well above average right now for the entire state except two areas. 98% for bear river mountains and 94% for escalate area.

Turning out to be a better than average water year for the entire state.

At my new teacher orientation for Granite School District this summer they swore up and down that they would NEVER call a snow day. No less than four big wigs for the district reiterated this, as well as my principal. No matter the conditions, they swore that schools would open due to the large amount of low-income students and serving a large area.

Today is my first snow day EVER. I didn't think they existed in Utah. The last time GSD called a snow day was in 1993.

Unfortunately school now ends May 24th instead of on the 23rd.

The mood in the GMD went from excitement when they announced the road closed for the day to extreme worry as the time ticked by and it was looking like they may not open. But once the lifties brought out the gates life got better. Interlodge lifted just after 11 and full country club powder was on. Deepest snow I ever remember skiing and top 3 day all time. We are building a new house right now, our current house has a North facing driveway and I hate when it snows. Ours is always the last to melt off because it's in the shade. We were going to settle on a South facing house but figured we wanted shade in the back yard in the evening, so we went for a West facing house.

Even when it snows an inch, when you think you can just leave it and it will melt in an hour, nope, it stays for days.

What I find interesting is that there is this notion that the weather becomes more severe the further north you go. Weber County typically gets more precip than Washington County. But this winter is proving that theory to be false.

Even the distance between Weber County and Salt Lake County can be pretty drastic -- a good example of that was the "huge" storm just recently that dropped 12" - 18" in South Jordan and Draper, but my driveway was bone dry that same day.

These anomalies and disparities that occur so close together I find interesting.

The local anomalies have to do with the lake effect and the direction the storm rolls over the Great Salt Lake. It's not uncommon for Sandy to get 12" and Draper only a trace and vice-versa because of the lake effect.

Anybody getting snow? I hear it’s going crazy down south.

I’m In Nashville and they’ve had buckets and buckets of rain here all week. 90-100% nonstop rain since I’ve been here. Two more inches and it will be a new record.

Global warming...Today on NPR they said not to be fooled by this cold, wet winter. The rest of the planet is cooking like an oven...like the Southern Hemisphere where it’s uhhh...summer.

They also declared that we’re less than 100 years away from a weather related Global Mass Extinction.

Here in Hawaii it’s as green as I’ve ever seen it. Plenty of rain this winter but the locals say it’s not “unusual”.

Well, we are in an established El Niño pattern currently (what they call the Pineapple Express) and February has been warmer than average...so yea, the planet is warmer.

http://media.bom.gov.au/social/blog/2039/201819-was-australias-hottest-summer-on-record-with-a-warm-autumn-likely-too/I guess you could call 82.4F chilly. Average summer temp in Australia is 86F (30C). I actually expected the average summer temp to be hotter.

Guess it would all depend on where they are pulling the data from. 82.4F sounds toasty to me.

No7 I am not trying to prove anything. I was laughing at you saying 80something is chilly, that is all. That struck me as funny because I start wilting when temps go over 80.

Also found it surprising that the average temp is not higher for Australia. And I wonder what that graph truly represents. All it shows is the standard deviation from average. Where are they pulling data from. Every single temp taken over in australia over that time period or a select few. Just tossing out a graph doesn't give a good picture in my opinion.

I'll just leave this here....

Febrrrr...uary... for the first time in history the temperature did not reach 70 degrees in Los Angeles

Home restaurant’s sprawling outdoor patio in Los Feliz, set under a canopy of large trees, was designed to take advantage of California’s temperate climate and typically sunny skies.

But this February has been so cold that the restaurant scrambled to set up extra heaters outside the Craftsman-style house to keep diners and workers warm during the record-setting cold winter.

“We had three heaters going for a while and this month it just hasn’t been enough,” said Sam Yoo, a manager at the restaurant. “I’m trying to have the waiters and hostesses wear warmer clothing, but I have one heater set up right by the host stand so they don’t catch colds.”

For the first time since forecasters began recording data — at least 132 years — the mercury did not reach 70 degrees in downtown Los Angeles for the entire month of February.

The average high for the month was 61 degrees, significantly lower than the historical average of 68 for February. That makes it the eighth-coldest February on record, said Ryan Kittell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

I was in Hawaii all last month. I've been there many times in the last 15 years for weeks at a time...sometimes the entire months of Jan and Feb. I despise the cold, short days here in Denver. Had to wait for the shutdown to end for this recent trip...so only 3 weeks.

Very nice, as always. This year however, has been wet with cooler temps when the "cold fronts" sweep thru. By "cooler" I mean a daily high of 72 (instead of 80) and an overnight low of 66 (instead of 72).

Anyway, you should hear the locals complain about the cold when it gets below 70 degrees. They run around with black seaters and jackets during the day...I'm still cruisin' around in shorts and a tank top.

Unquestionably, this has been a cold, wet winter for us here in the States. Funny thing is, I was dating a gal that lives up in the mountains (near the ski areas) in the late 90s. The hippy dippy local ski bums up there (of which she was one) and all their little newspapers were all predicting the by 2015 the average snowfall was going to be DRAMATICALLY reduced. So much so the the ski areas were "very concerned" about it. They're all going to suffer and the local economy will crash. Also, the marmots and pikas were all going to go extinct because the tree line was going to march up the mountain. Their food supply was going to disappear. I remember listening to her and her friends about this stuff and reading it...thinking "we'll see, huh"?

It was all bullshit. There's a friggin' sucker born every minute. They throw up graphs from God knows where and buy it hook, line and sinker.

When I'm able to paint exteriors, one week after the next in January and February...then I might buy into it. Otherwise, anyone predicting all this weather doom and gloom is a fool, IMO.

I was in Circleville last weekend (site of an avalanche death a few weeks ago). The run-off was such that ATV trails were raging rivers, some spots too deep to cross safely. As we made it across HWY89 toward the north end of Piute Reservoir, the trail had become a moving LAKE of water. Never have I seen that much runoff this time of year. It's going to get UGLY!

Snowpack levels exceed 150% for most of the entire state of Utah. Considering we're only half way through April, I'd say this is a good news/bad news type situation.

Good news: We're in great shape water wise. Our reservoirs will be refilled and replenished, and some of the heat is off for the immediate future.

Bad news: Over half the state has over 150% snowpack, and it's going to rapidly warm up in the next month. This = flooding. I'd say if you live in Santa Clara or anywhere else in close proximity to the Virgin river you'd better head to higher ground. Too bad they don't issue flood insurance to those folks.

What are the predictions for Lake Powell levels this year?

uintafly
04-15-2019, 07:59 AM
The snowpack is very healthy up high in the cottonwoods right now. Alta and the Bird both have 170" bases with another foot or 2 coming in the next 72 hours. This week is the last mid week skiing at Alta with them shutting completely down next Sunday. They will probably still have a 150" base when they close. The bird probably has a chance to be spinning lifts on the 4th of July. Yesterday was the first weekend day that I sorta considered not skiing. The mountain still won out, but I think Wednesday will be my last mid week skiing this year and I probably only have 4 or 5 weekend ski days left in me. I guess it's time to dust the bike off. What's the over under on when Crest is rideable this year?

Just for fun I looked at my Strava from last year to see what I was able to ride. Mueller Park is about 5 minutes from my house and work so I ride it quite a bit. Last year at this time I was making it up about a mile past the rock to the spring bridge before getting snowed out. The first day I made it all the was May 4th. I talked with some trail runners a week ago and they said the snow was thigh deep about a mile before the rock. What a difference a year makes.

Yeah, full pool happened several times in the 80's. But 83 was the only time the spillways required opening. I believe the spillways were opened once more after their repair as a test.

FWIW, My company did some of the repair on the spillway. Most people have no clue how close we came to losing that dam in 83. The concrete lining in the spillways blew out and than the river began eating into the dam abutments... scary shit, I got to go down in the spillway and see the fissures the river carved and they were so deep you couldn't see the bottom.

I was also on the lake in 83 when the spillways were open. We drove over to the dam one day just to watch. The water spraying out was orange so it was obvious something was wrong.

Just checking the Snotel and SWE for Utah and saw that SE Utah is at 1669% above normal. But for a desert where there isn't a lot of water, a few inches of rain could do something like that...
Anyway...

My understanding is that those who measure snow pack don't really pay attention to it after April 1 or 15th, I can't remember which. What those numbers, I think, tell us is that the snow is still in the mountains and not melting as quickly as normal. If it heats up fast, it could get interesting in some parts of the state.

I've spent the last 3 weekends in the Circleville area, mapping and pre-running a route for an 18 May Poker Run. I can tell you the snow melt is in full force and huge lakes are forming at elevation ~(9000'). Once those overflow, the run-off down the mountain will be tremendous!

Also, where its normally dry this time of year, there are still huge 2-3' deep snow drifts. Fingers crossed between warm & rain, those drifts melt away!

I heard it was from October 1 through May 5th for the “snow year”.

Yes indeed. A lot of water across the US in the mountains still.

This time of the year I'm nearly always already up AF Canyon doing trail work and chainsawing out the deadfall. This year SR-92 above the Pine Hollow gate isn't any where near ready to drive up and there's still 4.5' of snow at the summit. It's not looking like we'll have the trails ready to open for Memorial Day Weekend.

The same could be said for most high alpine areas of Utah. This of course means that Memorial Day weekend is going to be an absolute zoo at places like Moab, Arches, Capitol Reef, and The Swell. I mean, they already are pretty overrun on holiday weekends, but it's going to be even more so this year because so many other options are still closed and/or inaccessible. :frustrated:

I can report that good turns are still to be had up high. Did a little Sunday jaunt up Mt Baldy and down main chute. Hopefully enough snow to last us into July. Timing is everything this time of year though and we were a little early and it was still a little icy on the climb and not full on corn mode yet on the way down. Oh well, still better than church.

Utah is drought free thanks to 'fantastic' snowpack — but as temps warm, will rivers flood?

On Wednesday 5/8 I was up on the Markagunt Plateau on my way over to Alton from Cedar City -- most spots have up to 4+ feet of snow on the ground still, and Navajo Lake is still covered with a sheet of ice.

Driving over Soldier Summit en route to Price this morning was an absolute blizzard.

Been a long time since I can recall a Spring like this. It's almost June for cryin' out loud. I'm guessing many folks' Memorial Day plans have been rained out.

Welcome back. Just yesterday I was looking at your profile to determine when the last time you posted was....May 9th.

I imagine with all of the water that it's getting kind of buggy down that way? Or at least it will be if it's not yet...

I took these photos at the top of the Alpine Loop last Friday. Still 2+ feet of snow up there with 3-4' deep snow banks still on some north facing sections of the trails. Crazy.

Or at least it will be if it's not yet...I stayed at Eardley Canyon right up against the Reef near I-70 for three nights just before coming home. Indeed, the bugs around camp where out in force, but once the sun when down and the fire got going they were gone. Don't hang around camp when the sun is shining!

This is the little salt lake, in Parowan valley.

Been dry for many years, last I saw this much water was 83-84

Lake currently has water 7 1/2 miles long and about 1 mile wide at widest point.

Right now, likely around 2'.average.

Pretty consistently flat bottom.
