The Democrats made a huge miscalculation in attacking Kavanaugh... they have awoken the Republican base who will now turn out to vote next month.

The Democrats were already energized to vote in the mid term but Republicans were sitting on the couch, that is no longer true.

Democrats have shot themselves in the foot again.

What are you gonna do about Women and Younger voters?Mid terms are about energizing your base so they will get out and vote. The Republican base was fat, dumb and happy before the Kanvangh trainwreck.

And FWIW, historically the young are the least reliable and a terrible voting block. Why go vote when you can play xbox?

This is irritating considering how much good this douche could do with all of that cash. Just think of how many people could benefit from his philanthropy? He has BILLIONS of dollars at his disposal, and probably only another 10 viable years left to live. But instead of investing his money where he could really make a difference he chooses to spend it in pursuit of power.

My kid just registered cause he’s pro Prop 2 at 18. Plus he asked me why so many old white guys yell and don’t make any sense. I call him a dummy all the time but he caught an issue. Downside, he registered at his Mom’s in Sandy so he can’t vote against Mia.

You may be right, but then you'd have to say the same about all mega donors on both sides. Hell, the old bastard Sheldon Adelson looks like he'll be lucky to make 10 months, let alone 10 years. What does he possibly gain from spending millions on campaigns.

It is kinda strange though when you think about it. Once you hit a certain level of wealth, the prevailing politics of the time have such a miniscule effect on your life, that you have to wonder why they want to roll in the mud. Dems no doubt do it because they care about people and the future of the country, while repubs are just bad people.

Looks like 538 gives the Dems about a 75% chance of taking the house and the GOP a 80% chance of keeping the senate. Will be an interesting election for sure.

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2018-midterm-election-forecast/house/?ex_cid=midterms-header

He also is giving Mia about an 80% chance of winning, which kinda surprises me. I'm gonna guess that McAdams wins and the Dems take the house, but the GOP keep the senate.

This will certainly be an interesting mid term.

I have no idea where it is headed but agree with ice, that the Kavanaugh hearing may have turned some middles--right.

Hard for anyone to dispute the Trump/Republican congress success, the Right is being taught to fight( a la Trump) rather than roll over as in the past.

I rolling economy, record low unemployment, Kim at bay, tax cuts, etc, etc

Whether that is where the voters go, I don't know but I haven't seen anything from the left in regards to policy other than eliminate the tax cut and oppose Trump.

Crazy money will be spent, no doubt.

They don't which is fairly frustrating.

How about run on protecting women's rights, a cleaner environment, healthcare for all, improved immigration legislation, affordable higher education and advocacy for LGTBQ groups?

Not hard, did it in 17 seconds.

Neither party really cares about a platform unless they have to. I mean what was the GOP platform before trump? Basically repeal Obamacare and nothing else. Remind me how the repeal went once they controlled all branches of government? It seems the Dems think that running on anti trump will be enough. We shall see.

I'd like to see them run on the following:

- Seriously looking at a large expansion of nuclear energy to help solve this: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/oct/08/global-warming-must-not-exceed-15c-warns-landmark-un-report
- Quit yammering about bathrooms, statues, and mean jokes
- Rebuilding our infrastructure
- Decrease the military budget to sane levels
- Mandatory kneeling during national anthem
- Get rid of the FICA income cap
- Readjust the tax code so no American gets a refund greater than the amount they paid. I am cool with really poor people paying little to no taxes, but people getting more money back in credits than they paid is insane.
- Welfare reform: Mainly corporate welfare, but I am good with saying no able bodied person without kids should get any form of help longer than 6 months.
- Legal weed at national level
- Get rid of private prisons
- End war on drugs
- Retire every politician over 70
- Have smarter people than me figure out the healthcare issue

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told the San Francisco Chronicle editorial board on Wednesday that Democrats would make exposing President Donald Trump’s tax returns a top priority if they win a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives in November and she is elected Speaker of the House.

Democrats have been obsessed with Trump’s tax returns since the 2016 election, convinced that they will turn up information that would damage or disqualify him, though the information has always been available to the Internal Revenue Service.
Last year, MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow was mocked (https://www.breitbart.com/big-journalism/2017/03/14/epic-fail-rachel-maddow-mocked-after-dragging-out-trump-tax-scoop/) for hyping a Trump tax return from 2005 that revealed the rather ordinary fact that he had earned more than $150 million and paid $38 million in income taxes.

The libs have just soiled themselves on an epic scale. What the hell is wrong with Liz Warren? She releases a DNA test that reveals she's full of shit. Later, baby...

I just can't see this country putting Trump into stagnation mode when those that oppose him are crazier than he is. Trump is going to get what he wants. He always does.

Polls my ass. Sure the Dems will win in safe districts, but nationwide the slaughter that started in 2010 will continue. YMMV.

Warren obviously dropped this now so it will hopefully get lost in the mid term noise. Dropping this DNA test also guarantees she is going to make a Presidential run in 2020.

She actually has the same amount of Indian blood as nearly every American. I was watching a DNA expert explain this earlier today and it has to do with all of us can trace our DNA ancestry back to Africa so we all have a trace of the same DNA... Umm no. As an engineer I figured you'd know the difference between "71.4% of the vote" and a 71.4% chance of winning the election. If I roll a dice and say there is an 83.3% chance of rolling a 1,2,3,4 or 5, but I happen to roll a 6, it doesn't mean the original statement was incorrect. He currently shows Mitt with a 99.9% chance of winning, with 59% of the votes. And for the record, many on the left were mocking him because he was giving Trump such good odds, and he wrote several articles in the days before the election, explaining how Trump could very well win. But yeah, if you are making statistically analysis a 0 sum game, then I guess you could say he was wrong. But he did nail 2008 and 2012, only missing 1 state each year.

Iceaxe

I'll give you a mulligan on the stats portion, but I think "slaughtered" is a little overboard considering A) Hillary won the popular vote and B) Trumps victory ranked the 46th (out of 58) largest electoral college victory. Well behind both Clinton wins and both Obama's wins. He did however, beat out both of W's wins. Washington is still the only back to back unanimous winner. Reagan's win in 1984 was before my time, but must have been something. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_presidential_elections_by_El ectoral_College_margin

My unscientific result prediction:

National:
- GOP keeps senate
- Dems take house by 10 seats
Local
- Mia wins
- Amendment 1 passes
- Amendment 2 and 3 fail
- Prop 1 fails
- Prop 2 fails (by 1 vote thanks to Sombeech)
- Prop 3 passes
- Prop 4 passes
- Mitt wins in a landslide and immediately sucks up to Trump and tries to pretend he wasn't the #1 anti-trump guy 18 short months ago. Left or right aside, has there ever been a politician with less actual conviction than Mitt? His positions always 100% line up with the popular position of the moment, and will change as soon as the voters change. A true weasel.

I think it definitely happens. Just probably not when the popular ex-president is coming to campaign for the challenger for governor in an extremely close and heated election.

And the wording is so obvious too. "don't share on social media", "similar campaign stops for the ex-president have not been filled to capacity", "maximum media exposure and optics". lol. I also got some ocean front property in St. George to sell you boys.

A couple days ago I took the day off the get the brakes on my work van done at a nearby shop. I was walking home and saw this gal pulling up these signs at a big intersection. She looked pissed, yanking them out aggressively and walking with intent. She was a "hippie clone" as I call them...dreadlocks and wearing the hippie clothes, complete with hemp hat. She looked just like that androgynous person that is in that meme that shows up every now and then. I sat under a tree and watched her...she went to each corner and piled them up, and then got into a blue Subaru and took off...likely heading for yet another intersection.

Crazy people out there, folks. I snapped this pic of one of the debris piles after she left.

I always wondered what the 1932 German elections were like. today we get to find out. Not really a policy election, but instead a human decency election. On the issues, I side with the conservatives on a lot things, but the GOP is so corrupt and insane that people will vote D just to try to reign in the nuts. I watched the Fox News sponsored trump pep rally last night, and it was like the bad plot of a movie. The amount of pure bullshit that spews forth every time our dear leader opens his mouth is staggering. But his admirers just lap it all up. I can't decide if they are too stupid to realize he is a lying sack of shit, or if they just don't care. But let's all hope some sanity returns to America and scumbags like Steve King and Brian Kemp go down in flames.

Too bad the leg will gut it, because they know better than the voters. But at least it forces them to actually do something.

What we all learned:
- The GOP is still happy to cheat to win (see Georgia)
- Iowans are still happy to vote for an admitted white supremacist, though slightly less happy than before
- 9% of Florida's voting population are convicted felons (wtf?) and are now eligible to vote again
- GOP voters in California are okay voting for a crook as long as his opponent has a Muslim sounding name
- The Dems are gonna reelect Pelosi as speaker because anytime you can put up a 100 year old person who is hated by all republicans and 50% of democrats you just have to do it
- The sideshow is gonna get bigger than ever with dems issuing new subpoenas every week. (Maybe they should hire Chaffetz as a consultant)
- Duke is gonna win the NCAA championship this year guaranteed

Couple of other interesting #'s I saw this morning.

- Dems got almost 12,000,000 more senate votes but will lose at least 3 seats
- Almost 100 women were elected yesterday to the house. Hopefully the plumbing is up to it. :roflol:
- I saw an interview with a newly elected congresswoman wearing a hijab. Maybe I am a bit racist but it seemed weird. Maybe it's because I view the hijab of a symbol of how terrible women are treated throughout the middle east.
- Dems picked up 7 governorship's
- Dems lost more than 900 state seats during the past 8 years, but picked up 300+ last night
- Infrastructure could be a bipartisan point of agreement, but with a deficit pushing a trillion dollars, where is the money?

This tickles me....

SALT LAKE CITY — The race between Republican incumbent Rep. Mia Love and her Democratic challenger, Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams, may still be too close to call in Utah, but President Donald Trump said Wednesday it's over.
At a Wednesday morning White House news conference, Trump called out by name several Republican candidates who distanced themselves from him during the midterm campaign, including Love.
"You had some that decided, 'Let’s stay away. Let’s stay away.' They did very poorly. I’m not sure that I should be happy or sad but I feel just fine about it," the president said.
When he got to Love on his list, Trump said, "Mia Love. I saw Mia Love. She called me all the time to help with a hostage situation," a reference to Utahn Josh Holt, who was released earlier this year from a Venezuelan prison.
"But Mia Love gave me no love," he said. "She lost. Too bad. Sorry about that Mia."

Iceaxe
11-07-2018, 01:32 PM
Mia Love losing doesn't really hurt my feelings, I just hope McAdams keeps his promise to be an independent voice.

Red state and swing state candidates that embraced Trump did very well in this election. Love was not one of those.

The Blue Wave was nothing but a small ripple. Trump came out of this election in great position and really about as well as could be hoped for. He has a Senete that will back him and his agenda.

Now if Ginsburg will hurry and keel over all will be well in my world. In the meantime I'll just have to be happy with Trump and McConnell packing the courts with Constitutional judges.

Perhaps will finally see something done on infrastructure with the government's current makeup.

.

Has there ever been a president with a booming economy, low unemployment, inflation in check, and no major military conflicts lose so many seats in the house and so many governors? The senate map was extremely favorable this year for R's. Props to them for picking up a few seats, but I think the blue wave was a little more pronounced that you want to admit.

Has there ever been a president with a booming economy, low unemployment, inflation in check, and no major military conflicts lose so many seats in the house and so many governors?

Historically Trump had a good midterm....

It’s only the third time in the past 100 years that the party holding the White House has gained seats in the Senate in a mid-term election while losing seats the House. The same split outcome also occurred in 1970, 1962 and 1914.

Success in midterms is a rarity for anyone in the White House. The president’s party has won seats in both the House and Senate just twice in the past century in a mid-term election: 2002 under George W. Bush and 1934 under Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Historically the party in the White House has lost badly in midterms. The president’s party has lost an average of 37 seats since the end of World War Two.

In other news this election shattered all previous mid term elections with over 113 million votes being cast, never before has the 100 million mark been beat.

And as I predicted the youth demographic failed to vote as is usual with only 13% turn out as they would rather play xBox. My word of advise.... never depend on the youth vote to get you over the finish line.

In Utah you must sign your mail in ballot... so yeah, I'm thinking it could be voter fraud. Utah offers an absentee ballot for the situations you describe, which would be the correct way to vote. To make things extra simple I believe you can even vote electronically with an absentee ballot.

Or just do what Hillary suggests and just tell your wife how to vote... LOL...

When I was in college (in Utah) for the 1992 election my old man got an absentee ballot for me in California, failing to realize I'd registered in Utah. Somehow I found out about it a couple weeks before the election on the phone and was like "throw it away"... He was going to straight ticket the Republican on my ballot. It was one of the few times I got into a verbal argument with my Dad and able to beat him back (my Old Man won back to back national titles in debate at Stanford, I could never win an argument with him).

I hit him with "Why would you order my ballot absentee without telling me?" and "Why would you vote for me without consulting first?"

Lots of stammering, akwardness, with something like "glad you registered to vote in Utah.." and I hit him with "I'm voting for Bill" followed by dead silence. Had I known at the time I would have said "I'm voting for BJ Bill..."

Ahhh, so, my signature probably is the most inconsistent thing ever. I believe the most sickening part of Elections in the United States is open, rampant voter suppression. If you tried to match every signature on the ballot for consistency you could probably throw 1/2 of them out. It's terrible in the South. I don't think it happens in Utah, but voter suppression in the South is rampant. What happened in Georgia this year for example is a travesty. What is so hard about 1 person 1 vote? The south has replaced poll taxes and literacy exams with a lack of voting machines, or mysterious "lack of power" issues.

It's just sickening based on the South's history.

I would HATE that, I love the mail in ballot. It's so simple and I believe I do a much better job of voting as I have time to research candidates and propositions in the peace of my home.

On top of that I'd hate to waste a day off work standing in a long ass line to vote. I remember the "good old days" when you had to go stand in a 30 to 60 minute line out in the cold just to vote. It was not the fun time you'd think it is.

I'd like to see voting somehow moved on-line.

I won't abolish the mail in, just add more options. I would never stand in line again but I had a couple friends recently move and didn't get the mail ballots, probably their fault but they didn't get them so they had to ballot box. I work at the Hospital 8-7 on Tuesday's so I took my ballot down to the County Election office, also cause my envelope got ripped. I was worried if I mailed the ballot it was somehow get thrown out cause it was ripped. It was a strange reaction to a detail that wasn't a problem when I asked one of the county officials.

Yes!

Hell, you can file your taxes online -- shouldn't be too difficult to provide a platform for folks to vote.

This 100%. Somehow we can keep taxes, banking, contracts, etc. secure but, they haven't figured out online voting.

What a clusterf**k.... I'll guarantee this was intentional as the Democrats were going to lose about 1000 votes. By intentionally missing the deadline the recount is invalid and the count reverts to the previous count.
