The good old BBC have recently done an interesting article on how the old London Bridge came to be there (and it describes the rapid development of a desert into a city between 1965 and now):

For some reason, I'm having trouble with that link. I found this to work:

Thanks!

Fascinating story.

I had always assumed that the bridge was a replica and never really thought much of it. It wasn't until my wife and I pulled our boat down there one blustery October weekend that I discovered that it was the genuine article of the song I grew up singing.

Boating under the bridge was really cool and Lake Havasu is a gorgeous lake to play on.

... of the song I grew up singing....

The story behind the children's song is quite well told on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Bridge_Is_Falling_Down

(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Bridge_Is_Falling_Down)It was one of my 1960's childhood songs too. Many other songs derived from the death and deprevation that came about during the Black Death in the 1700's; perhaps this was one? I don't know.

This year (2018) is the 100th year since the great influenza epidemic that killed more people than died in World War One.
