Roseanne Barr blames racist tweet on sleeping pills

Disgraced comedian says ‘egregious’ statements were result of ‘Ambien tweeting’, and is scheduled to appear on podcast The Joe Rogan Experience on Friday

Roseanne Barr has blamed a tweet in which she compared an African American woman to an ape on the influence of sleeping pills.

The TV star, who falsely said that Valerie Jarrett, former advisor to Barack Obama, has connections to the Muslim Brotherhood, says her tweet was written after she had taken the prescription sleeping pill Ambien.

Roseanne cancelled: ABC scraps sitcom after star's 'abhorrent' tweets

ABC, the network that airs the sitcom Roseanne, cancelled the show on Tuesday and said it would not be renewed for a second season after what it called “abhorrent” and “repugnant” tweets.

Barr has since defended herself, writing: “It was 2 in the morning and I was Ambien tweeting,” Barr tweeted. “It was Memorial Day too. I went too far and do not want it defended. It was egregious [and] indefensible.”

“I think Joe Rogan is right about Ambien,” she added, referencing the comedian and UFC host who described the drug as “scary stuff”. “Not giving excuses for what I did (tweeted) but I’ve done weird stuff while on Ambien: cracked eggs on the wall at 2am etc.”

Barr will appear on Rogan’s podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, this Friday. On Wednesday, Rogan tweeted a link to a Huffington Post story titled The Disturbing Side Effect of Ambien, the No 1 Prescription Sleep Aid.

Ambien is also known as zolpidem, which is part of the Z drug family, a group of medications designed to help people sleep.

The revival of Roseanne was the most popular US show of 2018, with an average of 18 million viewers per episode. The reboot’s debut episode attracted 27.3 million viewers, including those using on-demand services.

Barr subsequently wrote: “I apologise to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans. I am truly sorry for making a bad joke about her politics and her looks. I should have known better. Forgive me – my joke was in bad taste.”

In a second statement she said: “Today my words caused hundreds of hardworking people to lose their jobs. I sincerely apologise to the audience that has embraced my work for decades.”

The rise and fall of Roseanne: how TV's biggest show fell apart

Barr’s agency, ICM Partners, has dropped her as a client. Co-star Sara Gilbert, who plays Darlene, condemned the tweets as “abhorrent”, and the actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani tweeted: “I’m glad Roseanne is canceled. The backlash to its cancellation is going to be a deafening nightmare. Nothing good has come of this entire thing.”

Let's see if there is a double standard...

Will Bill Maher to be fired after his Trump is part orangutan comment?

No, for two reasons: 1) Maher's wasn't at all racist 2) Trump does indeed look and act like an orangutan.

Trump does indeed look and act like an orangutan.

I'm not arguing that point....

But it's also not hard to see the Valerie Jarrett similarity....

Just trying to understand why one is OK and the other is not.... other then nearly everything liberals do makes almost no sense.

Orangutans are my favorite of all the primates. There's something about them that fascinates me.

Also, I rather liked the recent Planet of the Apes movies.

Because calling black people monkeys and apes was used similarly to the N word for centuries to dehumanize them. If we lived in a vacuum with no historical context, they would be the same. But since we don't, it is important to use some intelligence to see the difference.

Kind of like using the phrase "a chink in the armor" to describe the current relationship between Belichek and and Brady would be different that using it to describe Ichiro.

But let's be honest, you know all that. You are just so invested in your "liberals are idiots" narrative that you have to pretend to not see the difference. You are like the people that get all butthurt over Trump calling MS-13 "animals", just because they have to hate everything he does no matter what. Pretty sure there is enough that Trump does to get mad at, that we don't have to pretend outrage over insulting gang members.

It's only racist if you choose to try and weaponize the English Language... or perhaps if you want to try and label all who disagree with you as racist. There is no difference between what Maher said and what Barr said, other then one votes Democrat and the other Republican. Understand I'm not defending what either Maher or Barr said as I believe both were in equally poor taste, just pointing out the hypocrisy.... you on the other hand are condemning one and applauding the other, talk about in poor taste....

Anyhoo.... More proof that liberals make no sense.....

chink - a narrow opening or crack, typically one that admits light.

The idiom "chink in one's armor" refers to an area of vulnerability. It has traditionally been used to refer to a weak spot in a figurative suit of armor. The standard meaning is similar to that of Achilles' heel.

But feel free to keep trying to playing that race card...

The first thing to cross my mind when I heard this yesterday is Kim Hunter made up as Zira in the original movie. For Ms. Jarred, that wouldn't be much of a makeup job at all.

I reckon that makes me racist, eh? Bring on the Thought Police.

I'll bet you Rosanne ends up getting a big fat check from ABC before this is all said and done.... probably something like the $32 million Bill O'Reilly received from Fox over a similar dismissal.

Rosanne will get a big payday out of this if for no other reason then it's cheaper to buy out her contract then drag it through the courts trying to prove the detrimental to company clause, which isn't as easy to prove as you might think it is.

I believe the problem for ABC will be they had already green lighted season 2.

^^^This is ABC's big problem with firing Rosanne over "company values". The minute this goes before a jury and Olbermann or The Views Joy Behar's comments a brought up they most likely lose. It's much easier to just pay Rosanne off.

And besides, ABC doesn't hate Rosanne, they just hate her viewer's, which are the same people Hillary placed in her basket of deplorables.

It is not only Roseann that they will have to compensate.

Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf and John Goodman had reportedly secured salaries of $350,000 per episode and “are expecting to still be compensated.”

I don't know how anyone takes these clowns seriously.

For real, she Samantha Bee should not be employed after that. I really don't understand the outrage that's being thrown at Ivanka for that photo of her and her baby. Absolutely ridiculous.

Because people have to hate the "other side" no matter what. Remember when Obama's wardrobe choices were borderline scandals?

I guess. There are far too many people out there just waiting for the next thing to get upset about. At this point, we're all just making stuff up to feel great about ourselves without even thinking about what we're really saying.
