- Steven Hawking died on pi day - (3.14...)

"This year’s bitter presidential election has caused a rift in online relationships. According to a new survey, 13% of Americans reported blocking or unfriending a “friend” on social media because of their political postings

But the results of the study, carried out by the non-partisan Public Religion Research Institute, show the impulse to block varies widely based on gender and political leanings.

The study shows Democrats were almost three times more likely than Republicans (24% vs. 9%) to have unfriended someone after the election. A similar disparity turned up for self-identified liberals versus conservatives (28% vs. 8%). Meanwhile, only 9% of independents reportedly booted someone out of their online social circles because of politics."

I only block ex-girlfriends..... no use to keep them on. I did keep one that was a pretty bad breakup and I was finding myself checking her out. As soon as I said to myself "WTF am I doing?" I realized defriending ex's is best practice. I don't think I've ever defriended for religious or political reasons, I'd simply have no friends. I do trim the "Friend" tree from time to time if I don't have regular personal interaction with. I like a well manicured Friend list.

I love watching snowflakes melt....

I've noticed something on my feed over the past 2 years, I had a lot of Trump supports as friends that where mucking up my feed as bad as the liberals from about 3 months pre-election through roughly Charlottesville. Since then, I haven't seen much from them at all. I'm pretty close to a handful of them and I asked why I'm only seeing the usual liberal suspect f*ck over my feed (I've taken to hiding their daily diatribes). Can't get a peep out of them.... I can only make the usual conclusions that they might be a bit embarrassed and just hoping they make it another couple years without a nuclear holocaust breaking out over p*nis sizes.

By the way, this comment (I've taken to hiding their daily diatribes) I believe this is the worst outcome of social media. People's belief in their self importance. It's nauseating.

I believe Obama is genuinely a really nice guy and has a good heart. He was just a shitty leader. If you look all through history most of your great leaders were rather ruthless. I can't think of any great President we've ever had that wasn't ruthless at times.

I put Obama in the same basket of feeble leaders as Jimmy Carter, who I think was another great guy that just didn't have the stones to lead a nation from the front.

Goes to show, you don't ever really know what demons people are battling. It may be easier to understand the guy with no money or family killing themselves, but he seemed to have a pretty good life. I can't say I ever saw more than 15 minutes of his show, but it seemed alright if you're into that kind of show. But talk about a sweet gig for a foodie. The “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin has left the building at 76.

I have a really good friend here in Utah who sang back-up with her. Here's her post from this morning:

"I just heard Aretha Franklin has passed away, may she rest in peace. It seems she fought a long, hard battle at the end. I sang back-up with her several times, both live and in recordings. We rehearsed at her suburban Detroit home. She really was a "queen" in sort of every sense of the word. I (and another singer friend) were hired to sing the super high notes she wanted on top of the soprano section of her Gospel choir. She wanted the sound up there to be clarion clear and clean, unlike the richer, fuller sound of the regular soprano section. It was tough singing sometimes because at that point she continually smoked during rehearsals. I often stood next to her during the rehearsals. Behind me was her glass case of Grammys and other awards. Her walls were lined with tributes and pictures of her with every conceivable celebrity. We had to sing in NYC and were invited to join her on her tour bus. (she did not like to fly) Many singers did, but I chose to fly to NYC instead. That trip might have really been something! It was an interesting time."

I'm never sure how to rate that one. From a military standpoint it was mission accomplished as our military crushed the world's fourth largest army in a matter of weeks. What our military did in Iraq was truly amazing... Politically is were we really shit the bed as we had no clue what to do with the country once our military handed the management over to the politicians. YMMV

If you have never seen the movie "Rush" I suggest you watch it, as it's excellent. The movie follows the careers of James Hunt and Niki Lauda through the years until their epic duel for the 1976 Formula 1 World Championship. The movie is very accurate as far as movies go. Niki even commented they got the movie 80% correct and James couldn't comment as he was already dead.

FWIW: I met Niki once in 1982 in the garage at the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Somehow I managed to spend an hour with both team McLaren and Ferrari at 9:00 the night before the F1 helping them rebuild race cars. This was also Mario Andretti's last F1 race and he drove a third car for Ferrari. I've met Mario several times and he is one of the nicest and most accomodating people you will ever meet. I also got to meet Paul Newman that night, it was an pretty spectacular night for a 24 y/o gearhead like me. My mother was so dam jealous when she found out I spent time and ate dinner with Paul Newman at the race.

Oh dang...that hurts.Indeed. My favorite drummer of all time...next to Phil Collins work in the 70s.

Strange...when Neil retired 4 years ago I suspected something was wrong and had a weird gut feeling that he didn’t have long to live.

Keith Richards outlives yet another one.

I saw his death reported on the UK news this evening. He appears to have had that issue that makes the eyes shuffle rapidly sideways; but it evidently did not affect his ability to sing great songs.

I quite liked his later music; I was not (until now) aware of his earlier musical history; jazz, bass cello player etc.
