This is going to be a dry winter...

Last year I recall that by Thanksgiving we'd had at least 2 really good snow storms, and there was a bunch of snow on the ground almost state-wide. I can recall last Thanksgiving walking my dog in snow that went up to my knees at my sister-in-law's place in SLC.

Fast forward to this Thanksgiving -- SLC has had Zero snow...at all. A few rain showers that were here and gone within 24 hours, but that's it. And the forecast for Thanksgiving day calls for mild weather with temps in the 60's....and not a storm in sight. It's like there's a monstrous center of high pressure camped over Utah that refuses to budge - pushing all the low pressure and storm systems North into Idaho and beyond.

My prediction says the Wasatch Front will see no snow in November. And in December only two snow storms, with very little accumulation, and Christmas won't be white this year.

Hopefully I'm eating these words, but I doubt it.
Scott P -- What does your crystal ball say?

Scott P

Give it time. The storm track should be pushed south as the winter progresses. Due to La Niña, it could be a fairly wet winter for Nothern Utah, but possibly a dry winter in the far south parts of the state. Places like Arizona and southern California could be hurting for precipitation for most of the winter.

There will be some cold snaps, but the coldest air should stay north and east of Utah.

The above is what usually happens in La Niña years, so unless something unusual happens, I'd expect something similar to the above.

This is what Thankgiving afternoon looked like last year. This is from the Farmington Wetlands Preserve looking south-east towards Farmington, Centerville, and Bountiful.

Followed by dinner at Snowbird. If I recall there was less than 6" at the resort that was natural.

Last year started out pretty slow too and ended up great. I've cursed us though since I finally broke down and bought some custom fit boots. I also have 2 yurt trips scheduled and I couldn't pass up the Black Friday sale at ON3P yesterday and got some new skis which I didn't need, so we are pretty much screwed on snow this year thanks to me.

My predictions are holding...

So far, the month of December is a bust as far as precip is concerned. Dec 3 saw a few inches drop here and there, but the storm was gone within 24 hours, and most of that snow is already melted - at least in the valleys.

This week is supposed to maintain the same pattern, with a weak system brushing through this weekend.

The air quality in SLC is smog-a-riffic...

Scott P

My predictions are holding...

Yes, it's pretty dire water-wise, especially if you head south.

It is a somewhat weird year for La Niña as the typical patterns are still there, but shifted north more than usual. Some patterns are "normal", but usually in La Niña, northern Utah does pretty well for precipitation, but often not until the winter progresses. The south is usually dry.

NOAA still hasn't updated their 90-day predictions since mid-November:

http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/long_range/lead01/off01_prcp.gif

Here has been the actual for the last 30 days:

https://hprcc.unl.edu/products/maps/acis/30dPNormUS.png

North of Utah and Colorado the Rocky Mountains have done well precipitation wise, but south of those state lines the precipitation has been terrible. Southern California, Southern Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico are hating it.

Down south it should stay dry, but as the season progresses, northern Utah and Northern Colorado should get wetter, but it depends on where the storm track is. Southern Utah and Southern Colorado should remain pretty dry and south of that it should unfortunately be even worse.

In the west, the far northern portions of the Lower 48 should do best. If you want to buy a ski pass, go for Washington or Montana!

Even if northern Utah does get wetter, it shouldn't happen until at least late December or early January and maybe later than that.

The warm and dry weather is nice in many ways, but we all need the water.

You can see the dividing line between wet and dry by looking at the snowpack map for Wyoming and Idaho. In the far northern parts of Idaho and Montana it is also drier than normal, but you can see right where the storm track has been. I can't link the Idaho one for some reason, but checkout Wyoming:

http://www.wrds.uwyo.edu/images/wrds/nrcs/snowmap/snowmap.gif

The mountains in the northern half of Wyoming have been getting pounded.

Scott P
12-17-2017, 08:30 PM
It appears that the storm track may finally be pushed south, at least temporarily. Long term forecast are saying snow and cold later this week and possibly as late as Christmas. It doesn't look to be a huge snow producer, but temperatures should drop way below zero here and into the single digits in Salt Lake. It will be more cold air than snow.

Southern Utah and Southern Colorado (and even more so Southern California, Arizona, and New Mexico) could stay pretty dry to really dry all winter.

rockgremlin
12-17-2017, 10:07 PM
Yeah, NO. Utah got a few flakes over the weekend - like a half inch. And it appears we might get up to an inch or two more this week.

Not shaping up to be a very good water year...

Change "not good" to terrible. It gets even worse as you go south. Southern Utah is really hating it:

http://www.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/ftpref/gis/images/ut_swepctnormal_update.png
There is still a chance northern Utah and Northern Colorado can get some good storms in January or February (though likely not enough to catch up). Southern Utah and Southern Colorado are basically a lost cause.

It looks like we might get a bit chilly on Saturday for the first time this season. The forecast says -24, but I'm guessing that it will be colder than that. Thus far the coldest we have had was -8 on December 6, but that's not cold for us, and around here wouldn't really qualify as chilly.

Yes, a lot of Americans are completely ignorant on geography, even the geography in the US or worse in their own state.

Once an in law who live in Salt Lake most of his life asked me which mountains the Wasatch were.

Yeah, pretty crazy! Last Monday I pedaled my fatbike up to the summit of the Alpine Loop (8,200'). It looks more like April conditions up there than the beginning of February. Only 16" of snow at the summit and lots of bare pavement on the road. The trails also have lots of bare dirt, slush and mud. There has been so little snow that I actually have put in about 35 hours of trailwork up the canyon so far in 2018 (cutting out downed trees, pruning brush, removing upslope rolled rocks, checking on specific things for the Forest Service, etc.). Tuesday night I did a fatbike downhill race at Sundance and couldn't believe how little snow was there and the snow they had sucked. I've never seen anything like it.

Was able to clear the snow off my driveway with a whisk broom.

Ridiculous.

The snow appears to be falling in a specific region of the Wasatch front. Seems like all areas southeast of the Great Salt Lake are getting pretty decent totals whereas Ogden is lagging behind the curve. I can count on one hand how many inches of snow we've received all winter.

Officially -20 in Craig this morning; it was -26 ar my house. This was the coldest temperature of the winter so far.

Thus far since living here, we have never had a year that didn't drop at least into the -20's. I thought that there might be a chance this year, but this morning changed that.

Seems like all areas southeast of the Great Salt Lake are getting pretty decent totals whereas Ogden is lagging behind the curve. I can count on one hand how many inches of snow we've received all winter.

I'm not sure if this is a reason, but I do wonder if it is at least partially due to the fact that the Great Salt Lake is nearly the smallest that it has been in historic times. In theory, that should make the areas hit by the lake effect much smaller as well. The surface area of the lake right now is less than 1/3 of the size it was in the 1980's.

I never hear meteorologists talk about it, but imagine the effect to climate in the region if the lake dried up and there was no more lake effect. The lake isn't very deep, so after a prolonged severe drought, it actually could dry up.

I AM feeling left out.

Only a skiff of snow (less than 1/16th of an inch) fell on my driveway -- again.

This is bullshit

It is a good snowstorm, but snowpack is still way behind, especially down south.

I waited as long as I could @Rock (http://www.bogley.com/forum/member.php?u=22099),....but my neighbor's snowblower died, and before he went and bought a brand new one, he gave me his to fix up and keep.

I had it running in 10 minutes.

Saturday was windy and hard. Definitely a speed day at Brighton. Conditions weren’t great but watching the 6 year old leave the wedge behind and lay trenches was as fun as powder.

Sunday at Alta was A+ blower pow. Pure Alta all day. I still smile thinking of it.

Today was was a nice refresh at Alta and early 30” tracks on backside can’t be beat. Still found really good snow all day long.

Overall a damn fine long weekend and full mid season base in LCC. But 65k vert on my legs in 72 hours will keep me on the couch drinking beer this evening.

Well, it appears as if even God can't pull us out of the current winter drought we're experiencing. What's more, it looks like those really cool NRCS weather maps will be discontinued at the end of the year because of "staffing issues."

I had to drive from South Jordan to Kaysville today. Major weather up north and took me 15 minutes longer to get to work.

Now driving to St. George and major snow statewide. Whiteout through central Utah.

The recent storms gave Utah a bit of a bump. NE Uintahs almost 90% now, and the rest of the State is out of the red zone.

It’s getting better.

And more to come all this week too.

I was smart enough to avoid skiing in the rain on Thursday, but got up for a few hours on Friday. It was actually pretty damn good. I felt like I was skiing in the PNW, but it was soft and fun. The trees were especially delightful. Sun came out just after 2 and turned the parking lot into a bunch of rivers and the snow into gloop.

All those nice soft and wet piles of snow on Friday froze solid and converted into death cookies by Saturday morning. Groomers were nice and fast, but as soon as you got onto anything ungroomed and that saw the sun on Friday, it was combat skiing. I think I may have knocked out a filling at Brighton.

This morning was better. A little hiking to find protected snow was worth it, but spring is definitely here now. Birds were chirping at my house this morning and I found myself thinking of bike trails and dirt. I think I may be in a powder day only skier for the rest of the season. Time to go to the desert for a few days. I have a weird switch and in the course of a week or so I will convert from praying for snow every day to praying from dry trails.

Of course, it's now snowing at my house so I will probably have to shoot up tomorrow morning for few hours.

My driveway finally got 4-5 inches of snow last night. First time that's happened all winter.

My driveway finally got 4-5 inches of snow last night. First time that's happened all winter.I got about the same in Brigham. Only difference was there it pretty much melted off the driveway and roads as it fell. On the cars and grass, though it was not bad at all.

"While snowpack is way below normal, Utah’s water reserves are not in bad shape. A hydrologist says it’s too late to catch up on mountain snowpack, but stored water will get Utah through the summer."

:lol8:

That's hilarious. I like that weatherman.

It kind of keys on another pet peeve of mine (aside from overly judgy people:lol8: ) -- weatherpeople who are overly ecstatic about sunny and warm weather during the winter months. All winter I've listened to the weatherpeople get excited when we had a stretch of unseasonably warm temperatures and no snow. Ummm...do they know about our current drought situation? Yeah -- hooray that it's 50 all winter with very little snow...I'm sure the ski resorts are equally as excited, right? And all of those skiers who have been sliding around on slush all winter because it hasn't snowed in forever. Yup, they're having a party because of all that wonderful warm weather. And what about when they start dolling out fines for running your sprinklers for too long this summer because the reservoirs are drying up? That's great too, right?

Instead of throwing confetti every time we get a stretch of warm temps, they should be doing rain dances. Get some Native Americans all up in there. Wipe that dopey grin off their face and get out there and seed the clouds. Geez, what do we pay these people for? Do something. Anything besides breaking pinatas and toasting champagne to the unseasonably warm weather.

On the other hand, when I've expressed joy at a nice day this past winter, I'd get "blamed" for the low snow pack and how our lakes and rivers need the water this summer.

Sorry, I was only thinking of myself, I'll try to be upset on nice days during the winter lol
