To me it appears BYU has the same weakness they have had for a while, which is lack of team speed.

So now, after having lost in dazzling fashion, the Cougars will head home nursing injuries and targeting ejections just in time for the rivalry game next Saturday. They couldn't even get past the 50 yard line once tonight, sheesh.

Iceaxe
09-03-2017, 04:41 PM
If the Cougars suffer another beating next week they might as well just take the rest of the year off. Beating the Ute's will be the only serious redemption possible considering the High School Plus (TM) schedule they have after the Wisconsin game.

Dang, I wish the Cougar's would join a conference, including getting back in the MWC.

What moral victory are the cougars claiming so they didn't think they lost last night?

Why don't they say they lost and just move on? https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170904/56cb983e96c2b474b3f25c91622e8384.jpg

After next Saturday they'll be 1 - 3...with their only lackluster win coming in at home against lowly Portland State.

Heck, they could very possibly be 1 - 6 a month from now because after the Wisconsin game they play Utah State in Logan, then Boise State (who almost knocked off Washington State), and then go on the road to play Mississippi State in Mississippi.

All their fans seem to be blaming Detmer and the play calling. I'm not buying it. Perhaps he doesn't have the talent to run the west coast offense.

However...inaccurate throws, dropped balls, nobody able to get open and stupid plays, like getting sacked in your own end zone has little to do with bad play calling.

Mangum has not looked like the same player and the backup was running around like a chicken with his head cutoff. They don't have any playmakers. The cupboard is bare and it going to take a few years to restock it. Give these coaches a chance to bring in their recruiting classes.

Iceaxe
09-19-2017, 06:03 PM
Bronco was a terrible recruiter, and now the Cougar's are paying dearly for it. It will take 5 or 6 years to fix this, that is if Kalani is actually talented enough to turn the program around.

Detmer is the scapegoat, not the problem. Independence also hasn't helped, no matter how much the faithful wish it, BYU is not the ND of the west.

A front loaded schedule is not helping the situation. You have to come out of the gates firing on all cylinders, otherwise the season becomes a wash very quickly. Only a select few teams each year could handle it and nobody does it. You start with cupcakes first...

Oh how the mighty have fallen. 1984 is such a distant memory..... Lavell Edward's must be rolling in his grave.

So.... how much longer will this train wreck continue? Someone's head has to roll as that is just the nature of the beast, so who's head will it be?

My first suggestion to rebuilding is get back into a conference where every game matters, you have rivalries, and something to play for every week.

rockgremlin
10-07-2017, 10:34 AM
Makes me wonder if Sitake ever regrets his decision to leave Utah.

I doubt his head will roll because he's still pretty new. But perhaps some assistant coach's heads will. Detmer comes to mind...

Did Sitake burn that freshman quarterback's redshirt by putting him in the game for the last few minutes? I mean, you gotta do something when your starting QB sucks, but that was kinda stupid.

(1-6) East Carolina puts the hurt on the Cougs. BYU only managed 17 points on the worst defense in the nation.

Total Yards ECU Opponents Gained This Year

James Madison--605
West Virginia--614
Virginia Tech--675
UConn--596
USF--575
Temple--523
UCF--603
BYU--421

And no possibility of a bowl game...

The biggest value of a bowl game to most programs is the 2 weeks of extra practice you get. Much of that time is spent with younger players that will be playing more in the following year. For that reason alone not going bowling is a huge negative.

The spiral continues... I think they need to fire Holmoe. He got them into this mess and I think it was all about ego. They were desperate to do something to match Utah’s invitation to the Pac-12. Independence was the dumbest decision in the history of BYU Athletics.

It doesn't. Which is why the program has been languishing lately, and will continue to languish for the foreseeable future.

Not saying it's necessarily bad. Just that it's a huge deterrent for kids wanting to get into a serious athletic program.

As a side note, Bronco over doubled his paycheck when he went to Virginia. As did all of the assistants he took with him. BYU has gotta step up and offer the going rate if they expect to have a program that can compete.
