Overnight fire displaces 100 Midvale residents

MIDVALE, Utah — (KUTV (http://kutv.com/)) At least 100 people were displaced overnight when a fire started on the second floor of a Midvale apartment complex.

It was one of at least 65 fires caused by fireworks on Independence Day (http://kutv.com/news/local/fire-starts-in-sugar-house-near-parks-fireworks-celebration) in the northern Utah area, officials said.

Battalion Chief Steve Prokopis of the Unified Fire Authority said crews arrived on scene just after midnight to find a balcony fire "rapidly spreading" through the Chelsea Park apartments building.

That fire caused at least three injuries as residents jumped from a third story window.

"On our arrival, we did have two adults males jump from a third story window," Prokopis said. "They had minor injuries as did one gentleman who tried to catch them."

Prokopis said at least three of the 38 units were damaged in the fire, but that smoke and water affected many other units.

Prokopis said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Fire starts in Sugar House near park's fireworks celebration

(KUTV) In the midst of a Fourth of July fireworks celebration at Sugar House Park, a fire broke out just outside the park according to the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

In a Utah summer that has been marked by fire, there were several before the festivities started in Sugar House, including a blaze in Tooele County (http://kutv.com/news/local/fire-caused-by-fireworks-threatens-three-utah-homes-burns-structures) that got uncomfortably close to three homes and burned several structures on private property. It was started by fireworks.

Fire officials asked people to stay away from the area.

Salt Lake fire officials didn't report any injuries at the park and said they would send an alert if the fire grew to a 2-alarm blaze or greater or if the public should be aware of what was happening.

The westbound ramp of nearby Interstate 80 was closed because of the fire and they requested people to avoid the area. Traffic is expected to be impacted as thousands of people try to leave the park after the public Fourth of July fireworks display.

Initially there were no reported injuries. 2News will update this story if more information becomes available.
