I was at REI a couple weekends ago and saw that Edelweiss has a "rope cleaner".

I was intrigued and decided to buy one to test it out.

After a run through Pine Creek, Keyhole, Spry, and Fats Mans this last weekend, the rope got quite sandy. We hosed off the visible stuff before we headed home and the following day when I was back at the house, I used this rope cleaner to test it out.

Here are the results:

86906

86907

86908

86909

86910

86911

This was after running all 200ft of the 9mm rope and 200ft of the 6mm rope through the brush. That is a bunch of sand even after it was quickly hosed-off!

I did this in the bathtub, rather than the outside, just so all of the sand would be contained compared to being splattered everywhere on the cement.

The sand was easy to pick-up out of the tub, once the water settled. I got most of the sand out....hopefully....

Anyways, the tool is light and could be easily added to a backpack if you needed some in-canyon rope cleaning. This would be a good edition to add to a backpack, especially for a sandy canyon like Birch Hollow or Spry.

I dunno if it's necessary, but by the evidence, it did remove a LOT of sand after it was pre-washed with a hose...
