First to go was Kuze, now Daniels and Zamora...Jokl is rumored to be leaving as well. Who next? Future of Utah Basketball isn't looking too bright these days...

Utah basketball: Devon Daniels, JoJo Zamora leaving Utes

86199

A troubling rite of spring continues for Utah men's basketball: players transferring from the program.

Devon Daniels and JoJo Zamora, who combined for 46 starts in Utah's backcourt this past season, will not return, the Utes announced in a news release on Friday afternoon. It leaves Utah scrambling less than two weeks from Signing Day to replace at least three key starters from last year's team, which went 20-12 and finished fourth in the Pac-12.

"There are certain responsibilities and expectations that are critical in being a member of our program," coach Larry Krystkowiak said in the release. "We wish these young men the very best in their future endeavors."

After a first-round loss in the NIT earlier this month, Krystkowiak said he was looking forward to returning a team with experience. But Daniels and Zamora comprised a big chunk of Utah's backcourt minutes last season that is now gone.

The 6-foot-5 Daniels averaged 10 points and 4.7 rebounds per game this past season after coming from Prolific Prep in California, impressing as a freshman and immediate starter. Zamora, a 6-foot-2 transfer from Yuba College, worked his way into the lineup as the season progressed, averaging 6.9 ppg.

Daniels' status with the team soured late in the season, when he served a three-game suspension for "conduct detrimental to the team." In an interview with the Tribune, Daniels said both he and the coaching staff agreed following the season that it would be better if he started fresh — at another school.

"It was definitely hard, because I love my teammates," Daniels said. "The coaches taught me a lot. But I talked with my family and the coaches, and we thought it would be best for both parties. For the Utes and me."

Zamora shared his desire to transfer as well with Daniels shortly before their departures were announced. The junior guard was not immediately available for comment.

Daniels said his suspension wasn't the moment when he was certain he would leave.

"I honestly thought it was good for me," he said. "I came back, tried to help the team as much. I thought it was like a good experience. Of course we didn't win as much as we wanted to, but I grew a lot as a person. I became stronger."

Krystkowiak talked about keeping Daniels in the fold toward the end of the season, acknowledging his status was tenuous.

"Certain things have to change, and he knows that," Krystkowiak said after the regular-season finale against Stanford. "I've been sleeping on it, praying on it. Hopefully something comes clean and we're doing everything that's right for our basketball program."

Krystkowiak has seen many transfers since taking over the program in 2011. While he has a 115-85 record at Utah, finishing with 20 wins or more in each of the past four seasons, he's dealt with significant overhaul each of the past two seasons with nine scholarship transfers in the last year and a half.

Utah has seen three transfers in the past four months, with Tim Coleman departing in December after only a few months in the program.

Daniels and Zamora's transfers are significant: When taken with the graduation of Lorenzo Bonam, three of Utah's top six scorers from last season will not return. Utah's overall leading scorer last season, Kyle Kuzma, declared for the NBA Draft, but has not yet hired an agent. If he departs, only rising senior forward David Collette returns from Utah's most-used starting lineup last year.

That means Utah has huge ground to cover in recruiting: The only commitment on track to join the team next season is Donnie Tillman, a 6-foot-7 forward from Las Vegas. Fellow commitments Branden Carlson and Jaxon Brenchley are scheduled to go on LDS Church missions and join in 2019.

Utah also plans to return Sedrick Barefield (9.0 ppg) and Parker Van Dyke (4.6 ppg) and Gabe Bealer (3.6 ppg), who had starting experience last year.

The only players that showed up were Rawson and Collette. Tillman was missed.

I overheard the guy in front of me try to whisper in his wife's ear that he had to switch seats because of the "a$$hole behind him." LOL

I went in there to just hang out and watch a good game, but the guy in front of me, in the first few minutes of the game, kept yelling to stop doubling up on Collette because "he sucks". So ever time Collete made a nice play I had to yell right at him how much I appreciate Collette sucking so much. Good times.

What is it with BYU fans?

Tough one point loss today. They played tough and almost got it done.

——

Toronto ‘Utes’ Jakob Poeltl, Delon Wright won’t stop repping the U.

“Wright, Poeltl and Los Angeles Lakers rookie Kyle Kuzma helped Utah become the only Pac-12 school to produce a NBA first-round pick in each of the last three seasons.“

“You look at his program, he gets guys ready for the NBA,” Casey added. “I’m a Kentucky man, through and through, so I’m not trying to throw accolades at another team, but he does a great job of coaching his kids so his kids were ready. They understood the nuances of the game when they came into our program so they had a head start by playing for Larry.”

Despite the heartbreaking loss, I'm very pleased with the way the Runnin Utes played. They played as a team, never gave up, low turnover rate and didn't seem intimidated at all by the crowd or by being down 13.

Jon Huntsman Sr., philanthropist and global business mogul, dies at 80

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah businessman, billionaire and philanthropist Jon Huntsman Sr. died Friday at age 80, according to his assistant Pam Bailey.

Huntsman Sr. left his mark on the business world with the global company Huntsman Corporation, now headed by his son Peter Huntsman. Huntsman Sr. was involved with the invention of the first plastic foam egg carton and also founded Huntsman Container Corporation that was made famous by creating the McDonald's clamshell containers.

Huntsman Sr. was the father of Jon Huntsman, Jr., former governor of Utah, 2012 Republican Party presidential hopeful and current U.S. Ambassador to Russia. Huntsman Sr. and his wife Karen have nine children.

Early in his career, Huntsman Sr. purchased businesses with money borrowed through Huntsman Chemical, founded in 1982, according to Forbes (https://www.forbes.com/profile/jon-huntsman-sr/). He eventually purchased 34 companies, including the $1.06 billion purchase of Texaco's petrochemicals operation in 1994.

His real-time net worth was $1.21 billion, Forbes said.

The billionaire philanthropist battled a painful inflammatory disorder called polymyalgia rheumatica. He also survived four bouts of cancer. Huntsman Sr.'s mother, father and stepmother each died from cancer.
Those ordeals led him to found the Huntsman Cancer Institute and secure lucrative donation funds to that center through the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. His goal was to completely eradicate the disease.
Huntsman Sr. and his wife were known for being charitable. In 2016, the couple gave away $137 million, landing them the No. 21 spot on Forbes’ top givers list (https://www.forbes.com/top-givers/#ef70b6b66ffb) that year.

During his lifetime, Huntsman Sr. and his family have given away at least $1.4 billion, according to the Deseret News (https://www.deseretnews.com/article/765660588/Jon-Huntsman-Sr-releases-autobiography.html).

Though he gave away billions later in life, Huntsman Sr. said he grew up in a poor household.

“I never forget those times, and they leave certain scars in your memory bank and in your heart that you don’t want others to replicate,” he told the Deseret News (https://www.deseretnews.com/article/865593013/Renaissance-man-Jon-Huntsman-Sr-has-a-legacy-of-giving.amp) at the time.

In December 1988, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake killed 25,000 people in northwestern Armenia. Huntsman Sr. stepped in to help the damaged nation after the quake flattened buildings in a large part of the country. His assistance continued in Armenia over the years. He already had a company in Moscow before the earthquake hit, so it was easy for him to help the Armenians.

“From the ruins of devastation, they began to rebuild. It captured my heart … to where I said, ‘I have to help these people. I have to be part of it,’” Huntsman told the Deseret News in 2013 (https://www.deseretnews.com/article/865593013/Renaissance-man-Jon-Huntsman-Sr-has-a-legacy-of-giving.amp).

Since the earthquake, the Huntsman family has visited the country more than 46 times. They have also given more than $53 million to the country through their humanitarian service. The family’s money went toward repairing buildings that were leveled after the quake.

Armenians awarded Huntsman with two medals of honor and granted him citizenship.

Huntsman cared for those around him in ways big and small, and took time for things that mattered most.
Once, a local elementary school class wrote letters to Huntsman Sr., requesting that he meet with them. The business mogul invited the class up for what was supposed to be a 10-minute conversation. Instead, he spoke to the 5th graders at length, while his next appointment, then-Salt Lake City Mayor Deedee Corradini, waited.

In a 2014 autobiography, Huntsman Sr.opened up (https://www.deseretnews.com/article/765660588/Jon-Huntsman-Sr-releases-autobiography.html) about two traumatic events during his life: The 1987 kidnapping of his son and the 2010 death of his daughter, Kathleen Ann Huntsman.

In December 1987, then-teenager James Huntsman, along with a Highland High School student, was grabbed by a fellow student, handcuffed, blindfolded and then placed in a vehicle, according to the Deseret News (https://www.deseretnews.com/article/640197942/Huntsman-had-his-own-kidnapping-experience.html).

A $1 million ransom demand was placed to the family, and the call eventually traced to a grocery store, where federal agents converged.

When his daughter, Kathleen Ann Huntsman, died in 2010, Huntsman Sr. wrote in the autobiography that he was responsible for shutting off the resuscitator to take his daughter off a life-support system. She had had a cardiac arrest and was in a coma.

"My children say I have not been the same since her passing," he wrote in the book. "The grief over her loss continues to paralyze me when I dwell on it."

Huntsman Sr. also served as an Area Seventy for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1996 to 2011.

In an emailed statement, the First Presidency of the Church said they grieved with the Huntsman family.
"We honor Jon as a cherished husband, father and friend, esteemed as a leader for his exceptional capacity, commitment, philanthropy and service throughout the world," the First Presidency said in a statement. "We express our love to Karen, to their children and family. Jon's legacy of faithful leadership, generosity and goodness stands as a beacon for the entire Huntsman family and many others throughout the world.”

In a statement, Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch called Huntsman Sr. "a committed public servant, a visionary businessman, and perhaps the greatest philanthropist our state has ever known."
"Utah has lost a lion today," Hatch said.

Funeral plans for Huntsman Sr. have not yet been announced.

I just don't understand why Utah's bigs seem to always be in foul trouble. Johnson was half asleep last night and still had 3 or 4 fouls.

Collett was making an obvious difference in the game...(when he actually played) just to foul out when they really needed him. Haven't seen the total yet, but he couldn't have played more than 20 minutes. Rawson wasn't on his offensive game, but he was making a big difference on the defensive side. Fouled out when they needed him.

I realize some of the calls against them were total BS, but most were legit. I just don't get it.

AND then there was that very last play, with 9.7 left. Why the hell did Cedric dribble the entire length of the court and take it to the basket? Could that have been planned? Were they expecting to go into OT and win? Still scratching my head.

On a positive note...Bibbins was amazing once again and loved how he would just strip the ball right out of Oregon's overrated forwards hands.

The Running Utes will host UC Davis on Wednesday, March 14 at 7 p.m. MT. The 32-team bracket was announced Sunday night on ESPNU.

Notre Dame, Baylor, USC and St. Mary's earned No. 1 seeds in the 32-team NIT field released Sunday. The field features 22 teams with at least 20 wins, 12 automatic qualifiers and representation from 21 of the 32 Division I conferences.

Utah earned the No. 2 seed in the St. Mary's quadrant, while UC Davis is the No. 7 seed. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3. The winner between Utah and UC Davis would go onto face the winner of No. 3-seeded LSU and No. 6-seeded Louisiana. With Utah earning the No. 2 seed, as long as there were no facility issues, a win in the first round would allow the Utes to host the second round.

OK, so it's on to St. Mary's on Wednesday.

Personally, their 30-5 record doesn't intimidate me, since they play in a weak conference. I mean, here's a rundown of some of the teams they play in the regular season:

- Pacific
- UC Irvine
- San Diego (NOT San Diego St)
- Santa Clara
- Seattle
- Dayton
- Portland
- San Francisco

....see what I mean?

Check out who they lost to:

- BYU
- Gonzaga
- Washington State
- Georgia
- San Francisco

They just don't seem very intimidating considering their schedule and the conference they play in. Unfortunately they will be playing in California, so no home court advantage this time.

8 Pac-12 teams went on to post season tournaments and now there is only 1 remaining.

Washington, Oregon, Stanford and USC all went down in the 2nd round of NIT.

GO UTES!

And yet, the Utes just can't seem to ever get that PAC 12 championship. It's a pretty frequent occurrence where Utah chokes in the PAC12 tournament but consistently does very well against other conferences in the post season. To the point where Utah is the "last Pac standing." It's unusual and very frustrating.

10 minutes to tip off.

Looks like W. Kentucky is on the verge of upsetting Oklahoma St.

Wow great win over the Gaels in California! On to W. Kentucky in the NIT final four...

A few words about W. Kentucky:

They play in a somewhat weaker conference (C-USA), have a record of 27-10, and routinely play teams the likes of UTEP, Old Dominion, Rice, and Austin Peay. Again, not very intimidating. Their only notable win was over #18 Purdue way back in November. But they have a string of losses to some crappy teams all season.

What they DO have going for them is momentum. They are now America's sweetheart Cinderella team since the last time they reached the NIT semifinals was way back in the 1950's. This is a very big deal for their program -- they shouldn't have made it this far, and are winning through grit and sheer determination.

Also of note -- all three of Western Kentucky's NIT wins needed double overtime to get it done.

That said, they're a very scrappy team that you'll lose to if you sleep on them. I could see it going either way. Hopefully the Utes prevail in what is sure to be a very physical game.

ESPN gives Utah a 39% chance of winning in The Garden vs. W. Kentucky.

But their predictions don't really count for shit since they only gave the Utes a 12% chance of beating St. Mary's in California, and we all saw how that turned out...

I hope it fires them up and they kick some Hilltopper butt.

Betting line has Penn State by 4 points.

ESPN gives Utah a 25% chance of winning.

The Over/Under on the Utah vs. Penn game is 135. A good bet would be to take the under as both teams have been trending to the under for the entire NIT tournament. In other words both teams can clamp down the D more than they are given credit for. And we all know that defense wins championship :-)

Barefield and the Utes are coming out red hot. Hope they can keep it up. Penn State had some firepower in their semi game. The Utes will need lots of offense. Especially given the size advantage Penn State seems to have.

Utes getting destroyed in the rebound war. Penn heavily favored by the PSU cheerleaders...errr....the announcers.

PSU starting to run away with it, already 10 points up.

I think Lamar Stevens walks on water. At least the announcers think so.

Well, it was a good run.

Stopped watching ten minutes ago. I can't stand listening to the announcers go on and on about how great Penn is...

That was painful. I figured the Utes were in trouble when Penn State whooped Mississippi State.

Has been a fun season though.

Kyle Kuzma becomes first rookie ever to have 1,200 points, 450 rebounds, 150 threes in a season

He scored 30 last night and 6 in overtime to lead the Lakers past the Spurs, which helps the Jazz.
