Troy Taylor is Utah’s New Offensive Coordinator

SALT LAKE CITY—Troy Taylor, who directed the top passing offense in the NCAA FCS this season at Eastern Washington, has accepted a position at Utah as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham also announced today that offensive line coach Jim Harding will serve as the new assistant head coach after two seasons as the co-offensive coordinator.

Taylor comes to Utah after a highly-successful season as the co-offensive coordinator, play caller and quarterbacks coach at EWU. The Eagles, who averaged an FCS-best 401.0 passing yards per game in 2016, also ranked No. 2 nationally in total offense (529.6 ypg) and No. 3 in scoring offense (42.4 ppg). Eastern Washington finished 12-2, losing 40-38 in the FCS semifinals to Youngstown State.

"I have watched Troy Taylor closely over the years when he was coaching innovative high school offenses in California and was eager to see how that translated to college coaching. He achieved the same results at Eastern Washington and we are fortunate that Troy was interested in bringing that style of offense here to Utah," said Whittingham. "Troy has trained a prolific number of record-setting quarterbacks in high school, at his academy and now in college."

"I am thrilled to be a part of the University of Utah football program," said Taylor. "I have admired Coach Whittingham and his program for a long time. The opportunity to come on board and help win a Pac-12 championship is a dream come true.

"We will have an attacking style of offense that stretches the field and the defense in every way," Taylor continued. "Creating success for the quarterback will be our utmost priority. If your QB plays well, you have a great chance of winning. Therefore, the development of his fundamentals and skill set are vital. However, it is just as imperative to have an offensive system that is both dynamic and user friendly. That has been the driving force in my offensive philosophy and I am excited to bring this to the University of Utah."

Under Taylor, Eastern Washington sophomore Gage Gubrud set an NCAA FCS single-season record by passing for 5,160 yards, while throwing 48 touchdown passes. Gabrud, the 2016 FCS Player of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Columbus, averaged 368.6 passing yards per game, which also led the nation.

Taylor's instant success at Eastern Washington mirrored his lofty accomplishments as a high school coach and founder of The Passing Academy—a highly-regarded elite high school quarterback camp. His offense at Folsom High School in California set state records for passing in four straight seasons, as well as the record for most points scored in a season.

Among Taylor's most notable high school success stories was 2016 Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year Jake Browning of Washington. Taylor coached Browning from the time he was in fifth grade until he graduated as one of the most prolific passers in prep history from Folsom High. Browning set national records for touchdowns in a season (91 in 2014, tied) and a career (229, in just three seasons). He set a number of California state high school records as well, including season (5,790) and career (16,775) passing yards.

Taylor, himself a former record-setting quarterback at Cal, played two seasons for the New York Jets as a fourth-round draft pick in 1990. His first coaching job was at Casa Roble High School in Sacramento, Calif., in 1994 and his first college coaching job was as a graduate assistant at Colorado in 1995. He then spent four years as a Cal assistant from 1996-1999, coaching the wide receivers (1996), quarterbacks (1997-98) and tight ends (1999). He was also Cal's recruiting coordinator in 1999.

Taylor left Cal to become an assistant athletic director at Christian Brothers High School (2000-01) in Sacramento, where he also taught and was an assistant football coach for one season (2000). Before taking the post at Eastern Washington in 2016, Taylor spent seven years as a high school coach and teacher, including two stints (2002-04 and 2012-15) as the co-head coach at Folsom. Folsom went 58-3 from 2012-15, winning four Sac-Joaquin Section championships and the 2014 CIF State Division I title.

Taylor also served as the Cal football radio analyst from 2005-2011.

As a player, Taylor led the Pac-10 Conference in total offense in 1989 and finished his collegiate career as Cal's all-time leading passer (8,126 yards) and total offense leader (8,236 yards)—records that stood for 26 years until they were broken by Jared Goff in 2015. He received his bachelor's degree in sociology from in 1994 and a master's degree in cross-cultural teaching from National University in Sacramento.

Utah's Marcus Williams declares for 2017 NFL Draft

Utah safety Marcus Williams announced on Twitter he will forgo his senior season and declare for the NFL draft.

"After much consideration about my future with my family, I have decided to forgo my senior season at the University of Utah and enter the 2017 NFL Draft," Williams said. "This program has developed me from a boy into a man. It has taught me how to sacrifice to get where I want to be. It has shown me how to face adversity no matter how bad it may be."

Williams finished third on the team with 64 tackles and led the Utes with five interceptions in 11 games in 2016.

For his career, Williams recorded 189 tackles, 11 interceptions, and forced four fumbles in 37 games.

The more I learn about Troy Taylor (Utah's new OC) the more excited I am to see if he can fix Utah's anemic offense. The only part that has me a bit concerned is he runs a hurry up offense, and if your team sucks at moving the chains that becomes a hurry up and punt offense.

Report: Former Alabama QB Cooper Bateman to join Utah as WR

--

After announcing his intention to transfer out of the Alabama program in December, Cooper Bateman has found a new home, according to Kyle Goon of the Salt Lake Tribune.

Bateman has enrolled at Utah, and is expected to walk on to the football team, but at a new position.

Coming out of high school in 2013, Bateman was ranked the third-best pro-style quarterback and the 44th best prospect in the country. However, at Utah, Bateman is expected to compete for playing time at wide receiver instead.

The 6-3, 220-pound former quarterback originally hailed from Utah before suiting up for the Crimson Tide.

Utah lost three of their top four receivers from the 2016 season due to graduation. Bateman would be a graduate transfer and would not be required to sit out a year.

It’s way too early to have a good sense of how things will play out next season, but well past the point where it’s OK to start trying. With the scent of spring practice in the air, it felt like a good time to try to gauge expectations for next season. We’re taking stock of each team in the Pac-12 and see how things are shaping up for 2017. We conclude our series with Utah.

Under Kyle Whittingham, Utah has been a consistent contender in the Pac-12 South during the past three seasons. Lachlan Cunningham/Getty ImagesUtes' role in the division race: Utah has been a serious contender in the Pac-12 South title chase for the past three seasons, winning at least nine games each year. The Utes peaked with a 10-win 2015 campaign, one which fell short of a division crown only because of a late 17-9 home loss to UCLA.

The bottom line is that Utah has established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the Pac-12 while also demonstrating consistency. There are certainly flaws to be addressed here -- the offense, in particular, has gone MIA at some critical junctures -- but the Utes undoubtedly bring one of the league's hardest hitting and most physical presences.

Last year, Utah finished three games off the Pac-12 South pace. But it's vital to examine the Utes' record more closely. All four of their losses came by a touchdown or less, and one of their wins was over USC. To this point, that's the only game the Trojans have ever lost with Sam Darnold (http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/3912547/sam-darnold) as their starting quarterback.

So while the Utes are replacing many key pieces -- four starting offensive linemen, star running back Joe Williams (http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/3912576/joe-williams), and seven quality defense starters are gone -- they must still be considered a legitimate threat. USC is the favorite in the South, but recent history tells us Utah will remain a capable force.

What constitutes success: The high volume of defensive departure will test the Utes' penchant for consistency in 2017. Games at USC and Washington immediately stand out as massive challenges. An Oct. 7 showdown against Stanford is an early highlight on the home schedule.

Kyle Whittingham has set a high bar in Salt Lake City, winning 28 games over the past three seasons. So while the schedule may be daunting, the Utes will have to win at least eight games games while rebuilding their defense for 2017 to be considered a success.

Offseason priorities: Retooling the offensive line is priority one. Utah has established its will here recently, and fresh faces will be responsible for perpetuating that success. Successfully working massive junior college tackle Jordan Agasiva into the rotation will help in the effort.

The Utes must also pick a quarterback. Right now, it's a battle between incumbent Troy Williams (http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/546876/troy-williams), rising talent Tyler Huntley (http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/4035671/tyler-huntley), and Alabama graduate transfer Cooper Bateman (http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/546359/cooper-bateman). If this competition bores consistent quarterback play, the Utah offense can become more dependable.

Defensively, the Utes need bodies to replace defensive linemen Hunter Dimick (http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/531019/hunter-dimick) and Pita Taumoepenu (http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/551348/pita-taumoepenu). Both brought disruptive presences which Utah will miss particularly acutely since several starters also are leaving the secondary. That unit must establish cohesion around its one returning stalwart, safety Chase Hansen (http://www.espn.com/college-football/player/_/id/531024/chase-hansen).

The BYU game is gonna be a tough one. BYU always gears up to play the Utes, especially in Provo. Plus Utah lost a very large chunk of really good talent to the NFL, so they're playing with a relatively young inexperienced team that hasn't had a lot of playing time together. A lot of Ute fans will automatically chalk this one up as a win, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Cougs won this year.

Interesting article. I hope Palmer is right. I'm glad to see Wilson make something of himself in the pros.

Although I think the biggest obstacle to Wilson's success is gonna be the fact that he's injury prone. The pros are relentlessly hard hitters, especially when they know there are bets being made about the supposedly remarkable ability of some walk-on rookie.

Mountain Dew comes to the U! (Oh yeah and Pepsi too...)

By Amy McIff, Communications Manager, Auxiliary Business Development

In a unique and unprecedented agreement with the University of Utah, PepsiCo Inc. has been named the university’s official beverage provider, effective July 1.

PepsiCo brings to campus an extraordinarily diverse portfolio of products including Gatorade, Mountain Dew, Starbucks, Aquafina, craft sodas and many other products, in addition to Pepsi-Cola and its classic soda lineup.

Beyond a robust and health-conscious product offering, the partnership yields a multitude of benefits for the university community, placing a particular focus on students. As part of the agreement, PepsiCo will fund a number of internships and scholarships, a brand ambassador program and other career development opportunities. Efforts supporting sustainability and a recycling program aim to boost engagement at the broader U community level.

“We’re excited to begin our partnership with PepsiCo, a world-class organization that has made great efforts to integrate with our campus and support our students,” said John Nixon, vice president for Administrative Services for the University of Utah. “This contract will provide roughly 200 scholarships, helping our students with financial needs and those whose academic success merits recognition.”

The agreement was forged with careful attention to detail, even addressing the iconic PepsiCo label whose royal blue color may be slightly off-putting to Utah fans. U administrators collaborated with the PepsiCo team to develop co-branded signage and collateral — a first for PepsiCo who heretofore has never removed their classic blue color or allowed co-branding at this level. Vending machines, coolers and other retail hardware will incorporate both PepsiCo and U logos without the blue background that just wouldn’t look quite right on Utah’s campus.

“As a proud Ute alumni and on behalf of PepsiCo, I’m thrilled for the opportunity to make some of PepsiCo’s most iconic and innovative brands available to the University of Utah community,” said Kirk Tanner, president and chief operating officer of North America Beverages at PepsiCo. “The university has my personal commitment to bring the absolute best that PepsiCo has to offer to this new partnership.”

The physical transition from Coca-Cola to PepsiCo will begin on July 1 and continue throughout the month as beverage products, coolers and machines are swapped in and out. PepsiCo and the university anticipate executing a seamless transition but ask for your patience as the process takes place.

The Utes have been fairly quiet in the media since the spring game. Normally you see more videos and updates. It seems they are keeping everything under wraps this year, perhaps because they are installing a new offense.

Interesting situation. Many a Ute fan would like to forget about that ill-fated hail Mary pass that was caught by an Oregon receiver to beat Utah at the very last second of the game last season, preventing Utah from winning the South.

Carrington was the receiver that caught that pass...

Report: Oregon receiver who scored winning TD vs. Utah to play for Utes this season:

SALT LAKE CITY — Former Oregon receiver Darren Carrington II, who caught a 17-yard touchdown pass in the closing seconds of last season’s 30-28 upset over Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium, is joining the Utes and is immediately eligible.

UteZone.com reported the transfer Tuesday morning.

Carrington II, who was dismissed from the Ducks by new head coach Willie Taggart after an arrest earlier this month on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of intoxicants, is transferring to Utah as a graduate student.

In three seasons at Oregon, Carrington II caught 112 passes for 1,919 yards and 15 touchdowns. In 2016, he led the Ducks with 43 receptions.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound son of retired ex-San Diego Chargers safety Darren Carrington entered a plea of not-guilty to the July 1 incident at a McDonald’s in Eugene. The Oregonian reported that Carrington II hit a pole at the restaurant’s drive-through and was then observed by police making an improper turn.

Will this just be for the North Dakota game? Throwing BYU a curve ball? Makes you think...

Huntley is the future of the offense. Williams is out after this season and it sounds like Troy is training up a viable replacement. I think depending how the North Dakota game goes, Huntley may get the nod vs BYU and beyond. Regardless, I don't think we've seen the last of Williams. He'll be back as soon as Huntley either screws up or gets knocked around too much.

If Huntley and Williams are really as close as we hear you go with Huntley because you get him for 3 years.

Narbonne coach Manuel Douglas is not happy with Utah after Troy Williams becomes backup

Football recruiters for Utah won't be getting a warm welcome when they try to visit the Narbonne campus.

"We'll look at them skeptically," coach Manuel Douglas said Monday after news came out that Utah has demoted former Narbonne quarterback Troy Williams from starter to backup. Utah named sophomore Tyler Huntley as the starter.

Williams, a senior, started all 13 games for Utah last season and directed the team to wins over USC and UCLA. Douglas said Williams has already graduated and could have transferred to another school but stayed.

"They should have let him know and been more upfront," Douglas said. "I'm very disappointed."

Williams is a captain for the team this season. He arrived last year from Santa Monica College. Utah has a new offensive coordinator this season.

I really fail to see how Narbonne coach Manuel Douglas can be upset with Utah as Troy Williams was the starting QB for a full season, sometimes you're just not the best QB on the team. Unless they promised Williams are starting role if he signed (and they never do that) I really can't see anything Utah did wrong. College football is big business, you have to do what is best for the bottom line and not worry about hurting someones feelings.

I agree. I used to really get pumped for the "Holy War" but now I wish it would just go away.

It ranks dead last in terms of importance, since BYU isn't in the Pac12 (or any conference for that matter).

And every time these two teams meet emotions are so high that inevitably players come away with injuries. That's the last thing Utah needs - a bunch of injuries early in the season over a game that doesn't matter and isn't relevant anymore.

What is the game plan for Utah and BYU?

Utah - A steady dose of running (Moss and Huntley) with a mix of passing to Carrington. Defense needs to shut down the run for BYU and get pressure on Mangum to make a mistake.

BYU - Establish some sort of running game and move the ball with short passes. Shut down Utah's running game. Lock up Carrington somehow.

Doug Robinson: Reversal of fortune—How Utah and BYU switched places

The Talent Decline

The talent of football players at BYU regressed considerably under Bronco Mendenhall. Here’s one way to quantify the decline:

— Current players in the NFL: Utah 27, BYU 9.

— Players in the NFL when Mendenhall became head coach in 2005: BYU 24, Utah 5.

— Draft picks during Mendenhall’s 11 years as head coach: 11 (from the spring of 2006 to the spring of 2016).

— Draft picks during the previous 11 years: 31.

The talent drain has been reflected on the field. The Cougars have won a lot of games in recent years, but, since 2009, they are 14-23 against Power 5 conference teams and 3-12 against ranked teams.

It will be a couple years as Taylor is only two years removed from high school. Also, how much of this is Tyler Huntley? Watching Huntley reminds me a lot of watching Alex Smith.

Just remember how Marcus Mariotta made up and camofloged the numerous Duck shortcomings.

So I assume you all noticed that Utah is not the same offense with Williams that it is with Huntley. I think Huntley masks a lot of Utah shortcomings. When Williams entered the game it felt like I was watching the same Utah offense I've watched the past 5 years. With Williams they do some good things and then stall out, whereas Huntley keeps the team rolling. YMMV

For all of you Ute fans who are unfamiliar with Stanford football this season, I've got two little words for you:

BRYCE LOVE

Love is Stanford's RB, and he's running riot. Nobody can stop him. Here are his rushing totals for the season so far:

Rice: 180 yds, 1 TD
USC: 160 yds, 1 TD
San Diego St: 184 yds, 2 TDs
UCLA: 263 yds, 1 TD
Arizona State: 301 yds, 3TDs

....for an AVERAGE of: 218 yds, and 1.6 TDs a game!! <-----Those numbers are INSANE!!!

The dude's unstoppable. Good luck Utah. You're gonna need it when the Love freight train rolls into Rice-Eccles.

Shut down Love and make someone else beat you.... this is what other teams were facing when Utah had Booker and Williams. Yeah, I know easier said than done, but it does make the game planning a little easier and teams with 4 or 5 game films on him will start to contain him as they begin to understand his play. Again, this is a lot of why Utah suffered late in the season when the Ute's main weapon was Booker and Williams.

The good news is at the moment Stanford is pretty much a one trick pony. Utah has always given Stanford problems as our D is built for the typical slugfest Stanford likes to play. When Stanford subs to a jumbo package with 3 tackles Utah has the ability to sub with them and not lose a beat.

I think folks are looking at the wrong side of the ball for the outcome of this game. This game will come down to Utah's O against Stanford's D. This game is all going to come down to how well Troy Williams executes the Utah offense.

And I always like Utah's special teams :-)

I was in attendance for the National Anthem at the game yesterday. It was interesting to see the dynamic among the crowd in light of all of the attention this subject has received in the media.

It was amazing and a little eerie to witness how silent the crowd got when the flag was trotted out onto the field. I've never seen the crowd so engaged and respectful of the ceremony as what I witnessed yesterday. You could almost hear a pin drop. People were whispering and singing along to the National Anthem. I've NEVER seen that before. Really cool experience.

That was without a doubt the worst Utes game I've ever attended. Utah sucked, the officiating sucked, and the fans sucked. At one point the guy next to me was screaming death threats at the refs.

Utah was enjoying mediocrity with Williams. Heck, he was 1 yard short of beating USC on the road.

Huntley comes back all rusty and throws 4 balls to the other team.

Regardless of the refs and ANY calls that they made, the Utes lose this game. Curious which calls the fans went irate about?

I watched several replays on TV and the refs got them all correct. Maybe they missed a PI or two, but it wouldn’t have changed the outcome.

From the weekly press conference today.

Reporter: “Kyle, on Saturday some of the ASU players said that everything they ran in practice (at least defensively) to prepare for you. They kinda knew, which helped them pick off Tyler Huntley a little bit. Is that play calling? Is that maybe Tyler not seeing the right way? Or how do you fix something like that?

Coach Whittingham: “We gotta do a better job at not having tendencies... There are some things that are tendencies of ours that we’ve got to get corrected and you saw that...[the defender] ran to the screen area before our receiver did...and so there are definitely some things that we’ve got to address. Huntley rips Utah's showing vs. Oregon: 'It's f---ing embarrassing'

Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley was visibly upset Saturday after his team dropped a 41-20 decision to Oregon, which had lost three straight and was without its starting quarterback due to injury.

"It's ****ing embarrassing," the sophomore told reporters postgame before a Utah official cut off the rest of his interview time, according to Patrick Kinahan of 1280 The Zone.

Huntley went 25-of-43 for 293 yards and two touchdowns in the contest, but he couldn't stop the Utes from suffering their fourth loss in a row.

Utah receiver Darren Carrington posted nine receptions for 130 yards in his return to Oregon, which dismissed him before the season.

It's Whitt's job to have that answer. If he's lost control of his team it's time for him to retire.

Right now the Cougars are favored by 1 point. Basically anybody's game. The Utah fan in me says the Utes will grind out a win. The realist in me says Wazoo will prevail because they always seem to have Utah's number, and on top of that they're really good this year plus it's a down year for Utah.
