Looks like about a 30 - 40 foot faceplant into a pile of icicles. If he survived he probably got messed up pretty good.

I don't know anything beyond the picture. I tried to find the video with no luck. I hate falls when ice climbing because you basically have razor blades strapped all over your body and one of those razor blades always seems to do damage.

I never understood why one would climb on a brittle-failure material with built-in defects, especially when its hanging. The logic seems to be "it did not kill me yesterday - therefore it will not kill me today"

Folks climb ice for the same reason they jump out of perfectly good airplanes. It's really a lot of fun and a big rush. But the reason I do it is all the free beer and hot chick's throwing themselves at me.

In this video, a similar crack sheered the column right below where the climber is shown, but the column didn't fall. It has detached from the rock wall though.
And fortunately, if it would have fallen, the climber was tied in to the 2nd pitch above.
