On 8/4/16 we backpacked into Red Castle in the High Uintas. We started at China Meadows at 10:00 am and hiked 12 miles into camp. We set up camp about 5:30 pm. Even with the high demand on this area there was a lot of great camping places available between the lower and middle Red Castle lakes. My 9 year old son had a 18 pound pack and mine was 46 pounds. This was my Dad and mine second time hiking into Red Castle but it was about 12 years ago. Sense then my Dad and I have backpacked a lot of the Uintas and I can say now that Red Castle area has a diversity that I have not see in other parts of the Uintas.
The one very disturbing thing we found that first evening was a smoldering fire that someone built in a very bad spot under a dead tree. We had to put a lot of water on it to get it out. It is frustrating to me how careless people could have destroyed such a amazing place. I want to be able to go back to this place again and not have the scar of fire on it. I took a photo of the fire. The next day we spent catching fish (Tiger Trouts) at middle and upper Red Castle lakes and had lots of fun. Except for one of us who is known as hikster11 he spent the day herding Mountain Goats from the saddle below Wilson Peak to Red Castle. He needs to do a TR just on the crazy and amazing things he saw during that ridge hike. With all the snow we got this year everything was really green and there was a lot of wild flowers. We hiked out on Saturday it took us about 6 hours. Below are some photos of the trip. I'm sorry some of the photos are sideways it doesn't seem to matter how I load them.
