What the heck, I'll throw in some videos from my 3DR Iris+ (for sale, by the way!) since I probably won't film anymore with it. I began filming with this in about March 2015. All other posts here will be from my Phantom 4. Others are welcome to reply with their own videos here too!

That's awesome. I'm curious:

-What's the range on those?
-Does your controller have a display or are you watching with the naked eye?
-Approximate cost?

I could see something like this coming in very handy for my trail mapping. Many times I've gotten stuck behind deep snow banks or downed trees and have wondered how much further I could proceed without 5 hours of chopping/shoveling and winching.

This has by far exceeded my expectations. The other night I took it out 8700+ feet from where I launched, and still had crystal clear 720 resolution coming back on live feed to my Samsung tablet.

It varies though, what it really comes down to is your battery life, wind, and line of sight interference. Once it clears about 800 feet, I can't see it with the naked eye anymore.

If I launched and headed straight to a destination and came right back as fast as I could, I could get over a couple of miles away, 1 way and then back. But usually I launch, test it out, look at the camera settings, check the sky one more time, then head out.

Flight time on this is roughly 25 minutes for our altitude.

This would be a great tool to go scout out a trail ahead. The basic cost for a ready to fly/film package is @1500, then you buy your tablet or use your phone for the live view, then a couple of extra batteries, backpack.... I'm into it about 2000 at the moment.

Oh, and filters, another 100

And editing software

and this and that and this and that and this and that and this and that

Cool! Any other drone flying experience prior to this? I'm glad I owned the 3DR Iris+ prior, because it really shows me all of the things that can go wrong, and how DJI is a far superior product.

I owned two crappy Syma drones previously. They didn't have GPS or nearly as many features and the DJI is SO much easier to fly.

I actually haven't messed around with any of the speed settings or anything like that

So I mainly fly in P mode mode and the max speed for that is 20 miles per hour. I may look at increasing that because I am very often speeding up my footage by two or three times sometimes even 4

Cool footage! That would be cool to shoot a balloon festival, I believe they have them up in Ogden Valley every now and again, I need to look out for it and put it on the calendar.

Technically, as Hot Air Balloons are "aircraft", I wonder what the legality is for flying a drone nearby. Of course our main concern is not crashing into the balloon itself, but I don't believe the drone would be of any other concern other than that, do you happen to know what the rules are?

Sombeech
07-02-2016, 11:30 PM
So I just learned something new about the FAA rules. We know we shouldn't fly over 400' high, and I always assumed this was vertically above the controller. But you can change these ceiling settings and increase them, so once you are near the mountain and you "top out" really quick at 400' above your controller, you can actually legally keep climbing as long as it's 400' high from the ground beneath it, so you can keep climbing up the mountain as you're down at the bottom, but the ground rises, and your drone can match the rise and keep going up!

This changes things for me, as I have topped out in a couple of videos, wishing I could go higher up on the mountain. I could have, I just needed to edit the safety restraints.

Other videos, however, are showing me clearly breaking the law now, like my Skyline / Pineview one. I'm 400' above my controller, but I took it over the canyon and went to a couple thousand feet high from the canyon floor. Oops, now I know.

Mountains really do complicate things. You can hike up a mountain, and start 2,000 feet above the city, and then pilot the drone up another 400 feet and mile out over the city from there. It doesn't really make sense.

How do you raise the ceiling settings?

I thought @Sombeech (http://www.bogley.com/forum/member.php?u=6) had a pretty good idea with his daughter's tooth:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCULLCuHXro

How many times did you have to tie the floss? I had to do it about 10 times, lesson learned. It kept slipping off of her tooth, we had napkins ad paper towels to keep the tooth dry and everything, it was a huge ordeal. If I ever do it again, it will be the top tooth only, and regular string so it's not so slippery.

It probably took me 10 minutes to get the floss around his tooth. Finally I looked up a video on YouTube for how to do it, and I found the trick was to make a loop with the floss before making a slip-knot. It took less than a minute for me after that.

In fact, it was a last minute thought while we were in a hurry to get back to Panguitch, I decided to take the drone up for 5 minutes. I flew just 2 passes back and forth along the highway, threw it all together quick and posted it first so I could get it out of the way. But, people and trends are hard to forecast sometimes.

Cool shot! I was seriously wanting to shoot these falls when I was up there this spring, but there were so many people there. I thought about asking around to see if there would be any objection to me flying there for 20 minutes, but there were just so many people coming in and out of the parking lot that I just decided not to take a chance of bugging anybody.

I didn't shoot it. The guy with the drone was a part of the other guy's team that I was with in that shot. We just happened to get to that spot in the route at the same time and so we rode together through there. Just happens that his team mate had the drone and made a sweet video.

It was at about 5:30 am, and the only people around were a couple of other slow pokes in the race, so I don't think anyone hassled him about it.

Cool.

So one thing I'm starting to get concerned about is the whole commercial pilot license requirement if I want to sell any of my footage. Even if I get 3 pennies of YouTube ad revenue from 27,000 views on my video, that's considered profit from my aerial video and I would need a pilot's license (to fly real airplanes).

I know the rules are changing soon but I'm not sure when. Do you happen to know?

http://www.faa.gov/news/press_releases/news_story.cfm?newsId=20515

My understanding is that intent is a big part of the commercial element. If I make the drone videos for myself or family (recreationally) and someone donates money to support more videos, of even buys it from me, it still wasn't a commercial production. If you were using it for business (construction, surveying, real-estate, etc. it demonstrates a clear commercial intent and would require the license.

If you skip a head to 3:55, you'll see some dumb kid (whom I don't know and was not with our group) started walking up to the drone and acted like he was going to touch the drone / blades. OMG, stupid kid! That's why I hate flying around people, especially children. They could try to grab it, cut their finger, and you would get sued.

I'm thinking of getting some perimeter marking or a rope about 8 feet wide for the launch / landing zone to try and keep people out of it. People will stick their face right next to it before I launch and I tell them they could lose an eye.

On your last video, what other things have you tried to carry, and at what weight? Was it just 1 drumstick?

It was 6 drumsticks.

What other things have you tried to carry
The biggest thing I have carried was two fountain (fireworks) at once. It was over 2.5 lbs and it had no problem reaching 170 feet in altitude but it was a beast to control.

I have also carried and delivered a towel to a neighbor two blocks over (it was probably about 2 lbs).

Other than that, not much. Just some milk jugs for testing.

Sombeech
08-09-2016, 11:35 AM
Have you experimented with a release mechanism to drop or let go of a rope or anything like that? You could make a cool delivery service, cash under the table of course because of all of the regulations.

I've also been watching some videos where the drone takes a fishing line hundreds of feet out into the ocean and drops it, this could be cool for a big lake like Flaming Gorge and just drop a trolling rig down in the middle.

ah crap, is that against one of the many confusing new drone laws?

The one I need to really read up on right now is making money from my aerial footage. I know it's currently, or recently, that I would need an actual pilot license, (for an actual airplane) before I could do this, but I know it's changing so the average person can start selling their footage.

I tried to create a new sport of "Drone Jousting". I practiced popping balloons on the ground until I felt comfortable that I could pop them in the air. My first attempt at popping a balloon in the air went well, the second attempt caused my drone to spin out of control for about 50 feet. the second attempt caused my drone to spin out of control for about 50 feet. I literally screamed "Noooo!" and I really thought the drone was dead but it recovered and all is well.

It recovered on it's own before it crashed down, huh? That's impressive. I'll bet it was a nightmare watching it fall!

question for drone dudes.

What drone would you recommend for bacpacking overnight?

Ditto for daytrips?

Yes I am being lazy by calling upon your experience.

Bear in mind that I am 65 yrs- I don't have the robustness or enrgy of youth, though I could still outhike a bunch of them as long as its not a speed race.

My. otion is to use the drone to reconnoiter possible places of interest in some vertical areas.

The DJI Mavic is great for backpacking, as it folds up very compact. I saw one in person last week and I was very impressed. I have the DJI Phantom 4, and while it does not fold up, there are a lot of backpack options for it. But if you are packing a lot of other gear, you may want to go with the Mavic.

Man I've gotta catch up on my thread and post about a dozen more videos.

Here's one featured on Fox 13 News tonight showing my Ogden Canyon Fall Colors. I think I've surpassed a dozen of my clips shown on various news networks in the past 2 years.
