If you stay in small canyoneering group, this may not apply to you but for me and my friends this method works quite well.
So we typically bring a lot of noobs with us on our adventures and as such, we loan out many carabiners and descender devices.
Anyway, retrieving them can be a hassle sometimes. So my friend Jeff Guest created a simple solution (I mean, besides using our brains and just remembering).
He used one color of nail polish and applies the polish to a unused area of the gear. In this example, he uses green. Therefore if any piece of gear gets left behind we known exactly who's it is.
And mine is red.

And it has worked remarkable well over the years, especially when it takes months to get gear back and our memories of that trip and who went on what trip, etc.
This works for us. Do you guys or ladies have a system that works for you?
