I like off trail quite a bit, as usually you don't see anyone and I like places that aren't "written" up although I do use maps and guidebooks. Sometimes walking where it isn't "sexy" or recommended can yield special things. I was donning my rain poncho at the base of a wall in a no name canyon; there were some very faded petroglyphs not visible unless you were close up. The ground was washed out making a small gully; coming out of the wall were several points. I washed them in a pothole, photographed them and placed them back. I felt privileged to see them.
