The gentleman with glasses in the right hand seat (furthest) is fit-as-a-fiddle 94-year-old Eddie Habberley who flew Spitfires in Burma in the war (and in fact flew his Spitfire from England to Burma...quite a feat back then, when most went on a ship...and he was only 20 years of age or so at the time!) Today he flew me from Northampton to Gloucester in England (and back), although he did allow me to do the take-offs and landings!


It was a very great privilege for me to be involved in such a day, and a humbling experience to be in the company of so many aircrew who put their lives on the line in the War. The Newspaper link above is worth a read.


And I post this for No Particular Reason other than I felt it needs posting.

I was in Utah/CO/AZ/NM/TX in April 2017 (long story involving a helicopter rescue and serious $$, insured), and I'm in Wisconsin at the end of this July 2017. Then back again in the USA in October; destination as yet undetermined. As Shane knows, I'm an alien, so I could go to Mars instead.

One of these days I'll come with ropes and do a canyon again.

Because who orders a burger and a drink with a side of four large french fries? Doesn't make no sense.

Four small fries makes sense cuz it looks like something someone would do that takes three kids to McDonalds. Dad sits and eats his small #1 combo meal while the kids run around in playland after eating their fries.

Dad resents having to go to McDonalds again, but that's what the kiddies wanted. Especially the youngest one. He's feeling left out these days after mom took big brother #1 to In and Out last Saturday. And big brother #2 snuck out and bought a bacon cheese burger from that greasy spoon down the street with that money he'd "found between the couch cushions." Ya right. There's a reason why mom started hiding her purse lately, and it had nothing to do with couch cushions.

So today was junior's day. Once he had mentioned the word "McDonald's" both older brothers scoffed in unison, as well as dad under his breath. Dad can remember a time when McDonald's used to be his favorite place to eat out oh so long ago. So, so long ago. Now it was just taxes and snotty noses, with an occasional weekend where he'd have an empty house to himself. On those days, the bedsheets stayed warm until almost noon, and his only company were his well guarded secrets....

I follow the Mexican vacation spots closely because we spend a couple weeks in Mexico every year and what I tell people is pick your destination wisely and don't stray too far outside of the tourist zones.

Yes things can happen... there are places in Mexico I will not go, but right now I have more concerns visiting Kearns or Glendale in SLC then I do vacationing at a resort in Cabo or the Riviera Maya (Cancun). YMMV

Another way to look at it is that Mexico has a murder rate of just over double that of Salt Lake. That means you have about the same chance of being murdered staying in Salt Lake for two weeks as you would spending one week in Mexico. If you haven't been murdered in Salt Lake in the last two weeks, you should be good to go.:haha:

In all seriousness though, we do go to many of the locations away from the tourist areas, but we do try to avoid the really bad areas.

A lot of areas in Mexico (such as the Yucatan) are actually safer than the US, including Salt Lake City.

Although the murder and violence rate is higher in Mexico than it is than in the US, and you should always keep your guard up, a lot of tourist destinations are statistically more dangerous, even though they don't get the media attention. The Bahamas, for example, has about double the homicide rate of Mexico. The US Virgin Islands has about four times the murder rate. Most of the Caribbean Islands have very high murder rates. The exceptions are places like Aruba, Martinique, Cuba, Turks and Caicos.

Still, everyone worries about crime, but things like auto accidents et al are just as dangerous, especially in less developed countries. Mexico is more developed now than it used to be and driving/riding has become less scary, but there are a lot of countries where riding the bus or taxi is genuinely scary. Even in touristy places such as Thailand, you have about a 2.5 times the chance of getting killed in a car accident than you have being murdered in Mexico.

Also, even in the US the death rate of riding a motorcycle is about five times (on average, but depending on miles ridden) that of the murder rate of Mexico. You are much safer vacationing in Mexico than riding a motorcycle in the US.

Anyway, I choose to keep my guard up, but to travel anyway. For the most part, the highest crime rates are in Latin America, the Caribbean, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Papua New Guinea.

A TRUE HERO.
The date was August 8, 1982. The Red Sox were playing an afternoon game at Boston's Fenway Park. Suddenly a screaming foul ball whizzed past the first base dugout and Red Sox left fielder Jim Rice heard the unmistakable sound of ball striking flesh. Looking around the corner of the dugout into the stands Rice saw 4 year old Jonathan Keane bleeding profusely from his head. Realizing in a split second that it would take several minutes for park EMT's to get to the scene, the future Hall of Famer sprang into action. Rice leaped over the railing into the stands, cradled the young fan into his arms and carried the boy into the dugout where he received immediate attention from the team's medical staff. Within just a few minutes Jonathan was rushed to the hospital where doctors credited Rice with saving the boys life. Jim Rice played the rest of the game in a blood stained uniform, a true badge of courage.
