A Volunteer Canyoneering/Backcountry Patrol Opportunity in Capitol Reef National Park

DATES (negotiable): March 15, 2016 to June 1, 2016
The park will consider two appointments of a month minimum (could overlap).
DUTIES: Volunteer will work directly for the Chief Ranger and the Visitor & Resource Protection staff in patrolling canyoneering routes, backcountry roads, trails, and off-trail routes during the busy Spring backcountry season. Primary purposes of the position is to contact park visitors in backcountry/wilderness settings; explain park regulations and safety issues; conduct preventative search & rescue activities for canyoneering and backcountry routes; monitor trail, road, and spring conditions; conduct informal resource condition assessments; conduct minor maintenance to signs, primitive campsites, and trailheads; assist with issuing backcountry permits; and assist the V&RP staff with emergency responses such as emergency medical services and search & rescue. Skills and ability in technical canyoneering, wilderness travel, emergency services, and/or outdoor leadership are preferred. Work will include driving long distances on unimproved roads, hiking several miles a day on consecutive days, descending narrow slot canyons, backpacking overnight(s) carrying a heavy pack on patrols, and will take place in the high desert of the Colorado Plateau.
WORKING HOURS: Friday through Sunday, 8-6 pm, 10 hour days
REIMBURSEMENT: None - A volunteer position, but housing is provided by the park
EQUIPMENT TO BE OPERATED: 4WD vehicle, canyoneering gear, backpacking gear, computer, handheld radio, satellite tracker, GPS, digital camera
