I'm surprised with all the love this hire is getting. To me it appears to be a HUGE roll of the dice. Could be great, could be a train wreck, both equally as likely. BYU hires a HC with zero HC experience, who then hires the next more important person on his staff, who has zero college coaching experience.
I think Detmer would have been a huge get as the QB coach, OC blows my mind. No coaching experience, save for some high school stuff. No experience recruiting. Just seems like a pretty big gamble.

...and to be clear, I like the KS hire. Just surprised he doesn't appear to be filling his coordinator jobs with seasoned vets, if that is possible, which could make his transition into his first HC job easier.

In the grand scheme of things BYU really dragged their feet in hiring a head coach. By the time Sitake was hired most schools changing head coaches had a two or three week head start on gathering assistant coaches. This really put BYU in a hole as the pool of good available assistants had almost dried up.
I guess we'll soon find out if Detmer can coach, I have no doubt he will be a great recruiter. Imagine being a 17 year old kid and having a Heisman Trophy winner sitting in your living room asking you to come play for him becsuse he believes in you. That's a tough act to follow for any competing school.

If I was a BYU fan, I'd be having more anxiety by the day. I think the lack of news on hires screams dollars, maybe they overspent on their current staff and are cash strapped. So they are going to get guys in that are inexperienced and on the cheap.
So to be clear, HC, DC and OC, never held the position before. OC has never coached college football before. Hire Ed Lamb as a guy that has some experience running the show, which is nice, but lets be honest, the show at SUU is what it is. Now trying to back fill some position coaches and it's crickets. Names I'm hearing are guys that have never coached CFB before. It's great to get some guys with some CFB or pro experience, but you can't fill your staff with a bunch of guys that haven't coached and better yet, hit the recruiting trail.
We're 4 weeks from National Signing Day and Brigham Young has 4 coaches on staff as far as I can tell.

This is more a result of BYU dragging their feet on naming a head coach as most assistant coaches have now signed with a program. If you look back in the coaching thread (http://www.bogley.com/forum/showthread.php?75377-Video-Scenarios-for-the-BYU-Coaching-Search) you will see I predicted this problem would arise a month ago.... and yeah.... it's a big problem.
I really have very little concern with the coaches currently in place as they are good coaches and a good coach can coach anywhere at any level.

Like Gerry Faust....:2thumbs:
No, a good coaches and not good coaches through the food chain. Coaches that looked like locks, fail all the time. CFB is loaded with GREAT OC/DC's that never could make the transition to the HC. We have NO IDEA what Detmer brings as a college coach, zero. Like I said in a previous post, he could be great or a trainwreck. We have no idea if he is going to enjoy and thus, put in the grind it takes to be a great recruiter & if you think all that takes is a Super Bowl/NC ring or Heisman, I disagree.
If BYU wanted to pay, they are not too late on anyone. All they have to do is make a call, give a job title and number and the coach can say yes or no, position coaches can jump from school to school without issue, there's no lock up. Holliday is at Utah because he got a number from BYU and a number from Utah and called a moving company.

On a different note.... the Big 12 is trying to get approval to hold a championship game with only 10 teams in the conference (current rules say you need 12). BYU fans should be hoping this is denied as that will force the Big 12 to expand to 12 teams or give up the $30 million that a championship game brings.
Iceaxe

BYU's chance of joining a P5 conference just took a big hit when the NCAA allowed the Big 12 (who only has 10 teams) to hold a championship game.

I thought BYU wanted to stay unaffiliated...that they enjoyed their independent status. I've heard some BYU fans assert that they're the "Notre Dame of the west".
That said, why would they care what the Big 12 or any other conference does?
Scott Card
01-13-2016, 10:03 PM
I don't know who you are listening to Rock.
Yep, BYU's chances took a hit but Oklahoma AD isn't too happy about it. I still think it is a matter of time. I am not sure when the expansion comes if BYU gets in even then. Who should also be unhappy is every other P5 conference who has to play more conference games and share their money with more teams.
Iceaxe

BYU desperately wants to be in a P5 conference for numerous reasons. Money, exposure and prestige being a few of the reasons.
A Big 12 Championship game is worth $30 million is why it's so important to the conference. If the Big 12 was forced to add two teams to hold a championship game and collect the coin BYU would be one of the teams high on their wish list for numerous reasons. Hugh fan base, large name recognition, strong history and a sold out 65k seat stadium being a few of the reasons.

The good news is the Big 12 is back to seriously considering expansion by adding two teams....
The bad news is UConn and Cincinnati are the two teams at the top of the Big 12 wish list.

The way I understand it is the Big 12 wants to expand either east or west, but not in both directions. So one of the big problems with BYU is they doesn't have another west school to pair with them. Boise State, Colorado State and San Diego State have all been mention as a dance partner, but as you can see when combined as a package deal the UConn-Cincy combo looks better in many ways.

Does anyone think Taysom Hill coming back is a good idea?
Mangum and Hill require two completely different offenses to be totally effective. Not to mention Hill is extremely injury prone.
BYU had better use and enjoy Mangum while they have him as I will be surprised if he stays for his senior year as that kid has NFL talent.

Thought this was a good read.

Although many Ute fans had fun talking trash about the whole issue, for the most part what I've seen is support. I'm sure even the trash talkers would agree that Max Hall's recovery is more important than any rivalry and would be supportive regardless of the foolish things he said in the past.

What's up with the Cougar fans in this forum? Where'd they all go? I had to brush off an inch of dusty cobwebs once I stepped into this thread.
Anyways, what's the collective opinion of the team so far? And is the coaching staff doing the right thing by keeping Mangum on the bench all season?
I think the Cougs are a few mistakes away from a winning record. They could have beaten Utah and UCLA, and gave the Mountaineers a real scare there in the fourth quarter. If Taysom hadn't of thrown that interception there at the end the final result may have been a W.
I think they should consider playing Mangum - their offense is tailor made for him.
I also think they should drop all of this nonsense about wanting to join the Big 12. They look desperate. It's kind of pathetic, and it makes them look bad. Just stay focused on building up the program, and whipping up on everyone else from the Big 5 conferences.
I admire that BYU has scheduled so many tough teams this year...and it's not gonna get too much easier with Boise State and Michigan State on the road.

Finally a Bogley topic I feel like I have some true insight on lol !!! I have been a BYU season ticket holder since before I was alive lol.
With new coaching staff & a potentially dynamic football team hopes were high for this football season. Hopes were quickly diminished when people realized Taysom Hill is not the same Hill that played in the past 3 years. I'm going to do some QB bashing here so be warned. Hill has put on over 20 pounds since last season & you can see it when he scrambles & attempts to run. He's slower & not nearly as athletic as he used to be. He hesitates when in the pocket & scrambles WAY to early when there is not pressure. He does not know how to check down his receivers. When he does throw the ball it has no accuracy which was obvious when he walked away with (7 I think) interceptions in the past 3 weeks alone. I truly believe that Hills is the root of all your problems this year & I will gladly elaborate on why.
Defenses do not respect Hill as a passing QB which allows them to stack the box. This completely shuts down the run game, requiring BYU to win with the passing game, which Hill does not have. Our poorly ran offense requires the defense to be on the football field 75% of the game. Eventually your defense will screw up or tire.
If you look at BYU's 3 losses this year we have lost by under 10 points total combining all 3 games. During the UCLA game & Utah game the defense gave our offense the ball within field goal range, then the offense goes backwards putting us out of field goal range. Thats rather pathetic that we literally would have beat UCLA if our offense had taken a knee 3 times & let our field goal unit take the field.
As per Ice Axes comment, I truly believe that Tanner Mangum is the better quarterback. Magnum is the Tom Brady & Peyton Manning. Stand back in the pocket & let her rip. Make the defense pay for the blitz & spread the ball around the field. Meanwhile Hill is the RGIII or Tim Tebow. You look great when you make a couple great plays & make a couple good games, but eventually your going to get hurt, your a high risk player, & you turn the ball over. This BYU season is already gone to shit. I hope they red shirt Mangum so we can have him for 3 more years (if he doesn't transfer) & build our offense around him.
rockgremlin
09-30-2016, 03:23 PM
I'm really shocked that Mangum hasn't transferred to a team that would not hesitate to start him every game. There's gotta be a list of teams out there willing to bring him aboard and have him pilot their offense.

09-30-2016, 03:46 PM
Another thing that surprises me is that I keep reading on message boards and sports articles about how "Taysom has returned to playing to his potential, the old Taysom Hill is back." And I keep asking myself...which games are they watching? Because at least two of their losses could easily be attributable to Taysom's mistakes.
Devil's advocate: If the Cougars lose to Toledo, does the coaching staff finally consider a change in the offensive scheme?
Iceaxe

That's exactly what I was thinking. If Williams played an average game, Toledo would've destroyed the Cougs. Hill only threw one TD, and didn't have any rushing TDs. Williams saved Hill's bacon, and prolonged his starting position. Next week's game at Michigan State should be interesting...

The Cougars are favored by a touchdown over a less-than-average Mississippi State squad tomorrow in Provo.
Considering how bad the Bulldogs suck this year together with a BYU team that has found some fresh confidence after a victory in East Lansing last week, I can see the Cougars destroying Mississippi State by at least two or three touchdowns.

BYU going independent has proven to be dumb. While everyone else in the country is playing meaningful games today BYU gets to play UMASS high school girls chior.
BYU reminds me of the girl down the road who thinks she's a 10 but is actually a 6. It's time for BYU to get back in the MWC and start playing meaningful games in October and November. At least that way they would have a realistic chance to play in a New Years 6 bowl and play for conference championship.
