I don't believe players are going to fix the Utah offense as I believe it's the basic philosophy that is flawed and needs to be changed. Great players (like Booker) can mask the problem but it's going to take more than that to fix the anemic offense.

accadacca
12-24-2015, 10:59 AM
They wont have to fix much if the defense stays strong, which it should. They were 1 win away from the outright south title and 2 wins away from the Pac-12 championship.

Not fun to watch, but the Ravens and many other teams have won championships based on defense.

Nothing is wrong with the D, but just imagine if they had even a mediocre offense.

And now you sound like a BYU fan with the one game away stuff. Utah got the PAC 12 sixth place bowl, nuff said....

Utah defensive coordinator Pease retires, Scalley takes over

--

Utah defensive coordinator John Pease has retired, according to the school, and special teams coordinator and safeties coach Morgan Scalley has taken over the position.

Pease, 72, served as the Utes' defensive coordinator for just one season, but has been with Utah since 2009. He began his coaching career at Utah in 1968 and made stops throughout college and the NFL before coming back to Salt Lake City.

Scalley, a Utah grad in 2004, has been with the program in a coaching role since 2006. He was the team's recruiting coordinator from 2009-2014.

Amen to that.

One of my frustrations is that it seems Utah is a program that is respected enough that we shouldn't have any trouble securing coaching staff. Why do we have to resort to dragging old folks off the golf course to fill those positions?

And once we secure good guys in those positions they frequently bolt for other schools. Makes it tough to run a consistent program like that.

Good get by the Utes.. He's an LDS kid, married and back from his mission. Looks like he's scoring off the field too...

Utah has secured a commitment from four-star offensive tackle Garett Bolles, who announced his decision to join the Utes via Twitter.

Bolles is the No. 2 prospect on ESPN's top 50 junior college recruits. The 6-foot-6, 300-pound lineman took official visits to Michigan State, Arkansas, and Georgia, before deciding on Utah.

Brolles hails from Levi, Utah and attended junior college at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah.

Giddy up!

An abundance of skill players are on the horizon for Utah

Utes' biggest area of need: Per usual, this is shaping up to be a pretty good defensive class for the Utes, but defense hasn’t been the problem. The Utes have to replace three linebacker spots for next season, but Kyle Whittingham has earned the benefit of the doubt that he can coach up players -- be it Star Lotulelei (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/15802/star-lotulelei), Trevor Reilly (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/16834/trevor-reilly), Nate Orchard (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/3052511/nate-orchard), Hunter Dimick (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/531019/hunter-dimick) or Gionni Paul (http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft/player?id=49776). Some of the best defensive players in the conference have started as Utah projects and emerged as A-list defensive players.

Utah’s problem since joining the Pac-12 has been keeping up with the rest of the league offensively. From 2011 to 2015, the Utes have actually raised their scoring average from 25 points per game to 30.6. The problem is, the rest of the league has gotten better also.

Utah’s 30.6 points per game in 2015 would have ranked them sixth in 2011. This season, it ranked ninth.

If QB transfer Troy Williams emerges as the starter, they’ll still need a plan of succession for down the road. They’ll get Britain Covey (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/3926231/britain-covey) back in a couple of seasons, but finding skill-position players -- receivers and running backs -- has to be a top priority. Utah has been solid making the most out of its tight ends, which is great for third downs and in the red zone, but pure speed at the receiver spot and depth at running back will help them keep pace with the rest of the league. -- Kevin Gemmell

Help is on the way?: Say hello to the next wave of skill talent for the Utes. After offensive tackle Garett Bolles (http://espn.go.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player?id=208974) -- a massive commitment as the nation's No. 2 overall junior college prospect -- the next six prospects committed to Utah are three running backs, a quarterback and two wide receivers. The backs -- all initially from Florida -- are Devontae Henry-Cole (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/208302/devontae-henry-cole), Zack Moss (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/195592/zack-moss) and ESPN JC 50 prospect Thomas McDonald (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/212164/thomas-mcdonald).

Williams has the ability to step in and grab the starting quarterback spot this fall. At wide receiver, Samson Nacua (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/217665/samson-nacua) and junior college prospect Alec Dana (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/203782/alec-dana) are joined by R.J. Hubert (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/214227/rj-hubert) as a pure wide receiver. Athlete Tyler Huntley (http://espn.go.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player?id=181725) will begin his career as a quarterback, while teammate and fellow athlete Demari Simpkins (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/199935/demari-simpkins) will likely be headed for receiver.

Julian Blackmon (http://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/213825/julian-blackmon) is a prospect to keep an eye on, as he is a big-time athlete and could become an overlooked in-state commitment who finds early success, similar to what Covey did in 2015. -- Erik McKinney

I did some sleuthing around on Troy Williams. Really impressive year last year as Santa Monica's starting QB. He appears to be a dual threat guy, who can rush as well as pass. In one game he threw for 7 TDs, and in another he threw for 4 TDs, and rushed for 3 more. Granted, these numbers are against crappy juco teams, but still...

Here's a link to his box scores from last season:

And he was Washington's 4th string QB and could see he was never going to play after Chris Peterson took over the program.

Hmmmm.... So, my question is, who continually has a dynamic and high scoring offense, Whittingham or Petterson?

--Keep an eye on Utah QB recruit Tyler Huntley, a 6-foot-2, 190-pounder from South Florida. Much of the attention for the Utes' recruiting class has been on the arrival of former Washington QB Troy Williams, but don't forget about Huntley. He threw for 42 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions this season and led Hallandale HS to the Florida 5A regional finals for the first time in school history. He threw for more than 9,000 yards in his high school career and 106 TDs.

"I think Utah got the steal of the state," said one assistant coach from a Florida FBS program. "He can run. He can sling it. He's a heck of a player. This kid just has got the juice."

Utah has 'home-run hitter' to succeed departing Devontae Booker in backfield

Joe Williams posted a prolific season at the junior college level in 2014. He averaged 6.7 yards per rush at ASA College in Brooklyn, located smack dab in the middle of the New York City borough. He attended class in the heart of urban America -- right above where the A, C, and F subway trains intersect.

Less than two years later, you'll find Williams 2,000 miles away from the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple -- in terms of both geography and lifestyle. Williams is the favorite to succeed Devontae Booker as Utah's starting running back, and he's snowboarding down majestic, powdery slopes in his offseason free time.

Honking cabs and crowded sidewalks are far, far back in the rearview mirror.

"It's definitely more quiet in Salt Lake City," Williams laughs. "But I love it here. It may not have the city life that New York City has, but the atmosphere and outdoors here are awesome."

The football opportunity ahead of him is pretty awesome, too. For the past two seasons, Booker had been the cog of the Utes' offense. That starting running back spot -- especially important this season since Utah is also breaking in a new quarterback -- is now up for grabs.

Joe Williams ran for 399 of his 477 yards last season in Utah's final three games. Russ Isabella/USA TODAY Sports
The 5-foot-10, 204-pound Williams broke onto the scene after Booker tore his meniscus in mid-November. Williams averaged 133 rushing yards in Utah's final three games.

"I'm a home-run hitter," Williams says. "I've got the speed that everyone knows, I've got some power, and I have pretty good hands out of the backfield. I think I can do it do it all. I think I'm an all-purpose back."

This versatility is Williams' biggest asset as he battles a room of Utah backs to earn the lion's share of the 2016 work. Troy McCormick -- back from a knee injury -- and Marcel Manalo are also part of that fight, but Williams' finish to 2015 has put him in the driver's seat.

“He’s our lead back. He’s the featured back right now -- primary ball carrier,” Utah coach Kyle Whittingham told the Deseret News. “He’s explosive. He brings a lot to the table. He has really figured things out since he’s been here as well and I know his best is yet to come.”

Williams' journey has taken anything but a linear path. The Pennsylvania product enrolled at Forks Union Military Academy in Virginia for a semester before accepting Connecticut's scholarship offer in 2012. After struggling to adapt to the college game with the Huskies -- he carried the ball only three times there -- Williams transferred to ASA College.

Utah noticed him in the midst of two productive seasons in New York City. Soon, Williams was snowmobiling in Park City on a recruiting visit. The Utes' commitment to a physical brand of football appealed to him, and he decided to take the plunge and embrace the drastic change of scenery.

"We play with a chip on our shoulders here," Williams says. "We always get talked down as just being 'that physical team,' and people ask if we're as good as Oregon or USC or those teams. We just want to show other teams that we're not here to mess around."

Williams certainly looked serious in his breakout flurry to close 2015, darting through holes with his quickness -- the former track star has been clocked at 4.38 in the 40-yard dash -- and helping the Utes breathe easier about post-Booker life at running back.

"Those three games boosted my self-esteem as a running back," Williams says. "Now I'm just trying to get better in the film room and on the field. I want to bring that same intensity and performance to the upcoming season."

Goal number one is to add some more strength to his frame: Williams is shooting to weigh in at 210 pounds this September, which will require him to pack on about six more pounds of muscle over the coming months. The longer-term objective is one of team success, as Williams hopes to grab the offense's vacated leadership post and push Utah to replicate its recent winning ways, highlighted by 19 victories over the past two seasons.

"I'm very confident in the team we have right now," Williams says. "We've all come out every day with great effort. We're trying to show the coaches what we're made of. And I'm doing my part every day to ball out."

Not many could have seen this pairing coming just a couple years ago, when Williams was grinding for another Division I opportunity in New York City. But the running back's move is complete now -- culture change, snowboarding, and all -- and the Utes are ready to fully reap the benefits of Williams' radical relocation.

Well, in keeping with perennial Bogley tradition, I come here to bitch and moan about how deplorable the Utes look in their first game of the season. Overlooking all of their achievements and highlights on the field against SUU, I will instead bemoan their horrible coaching and player performance, and complain that we should have blown SUU out by at least 80 points in order to be taken seriously as a contender in the Pac12 this season. <sigh> Looks like this will be a mediocre season at best...Right? Amirite?

We are really going to miss Devonte Booker :-( our normally dependable run game sucked.

Same old offense... shows flashes of brilliance but mostly just struggles by.

One the other hand SUU looked outstanding slugging it out toe to toe with a PAC12 team until they were finally beat by size, speed and depth. But they didn't lose because of heart or coaching.

uintafly
09-02-2016, 06:08 AM
They looked extremely flat, but I guess you can chalk it up to 1st game jitters and playing SUU. What I found most concerning was how our O-line played so poorly. A ton of penalties was bad enough, but the amount of pressure SUU's D-line was getting was crazy. Williams should have had all day back there to pass and our RB's should have been getting through the line with ease, but it seemed just about every 1st contact was at the los. Could be a frustrating season once they start lining up against PAC-12 lines. (not to mention those fat white 30 year old's down south)

rockgremlin
09-02-2016, 09:21 AM
Fat white 30 yr olds down south...snicker, snicker. Speaking of which, if we play them like we played SUU, there could be an upset next week. The Cougars are probably looking at last night's performance by the Utes and salivating.

Iceaxe

The good news is the problems with the O line are easy to fix in the grand scheme of things as they were just out of sync and blocking the wrong assignment. They have the talent. Now they just need to get them all on the same page.

According to Vegas sportsbook, Utah's Blackout game favors the Utes to win by 3 points.

This one makes me nervous. USC is stacked with incredible talent, and they're desperate for a win. While the Trojans have been cutting their teeth against the top team in the country ('Bama) and a very skilled Stanford team, Utah has been dicking around with cupcakes, and coughing up almost a dozen turnovers in the process.

I'm pleased the Utes are ranked, but that only ups the ante and incentivizes the already frustrated and disrespected Trojans to clobber Utah like they did last year.

I plan on being in attendance, making a nuisance of myself, shouting obscenities at the refs and the opposing team's head coach while decked out in my blackest black. I only hope that's enough to avenge last year's demoralizing loss, and come away with that W. Go Utes!

Utah is looking more impressive with every passing week. Heading into week 5 they have two dangerous RBs, and a very talented and capable receiving corps catching passes from an accurate dual-threat QB, who gets better every time we see him. All of this together with an elite defensive squad.

The one down side - injuries. Kylie Fitts is gone for the season, and now Lowell Lotuleili is injured...hopefully it's not serious and he recovers quickly.

I have to say I pretty much agree with everything that was written in the article. Except that the Ute offense is one dimensional. Last night Utah's offense was anything but one dimensional. The O-line was outstanding, which allowed Utah to move the ball on the ground and in the air.

If you are looking at raw talent USC is easily one of the top 5 teams in the country. And I agree there is no way they should have choked with a 14 point lead late in the game.

RockG's $0.02: California Golden Bears

Well, apparently Vegas has Cal as a one point favorite over the 18th ranked Utes. Usually the home team gets a three point edge in the betting lines, so technically if this was played at a neutral site Utah would be favored by 2. Basically, this is a coin flip.

Cal has a very dangerous and accurate passer in Webb, who already has over 1800 passing yards and 18 TDs in just four games. Utah's secondary is gonna have their hands full because Cal can air out the football seemingly at will, and a win against a top 20 team would look great on an already not-so-stellar resume.

The only barometer we have for gauging Utah's performance against a talented QB is how they performed against BYU and USC, and they just barely squeaked by in both instances. Add to that the fact that Utah's vaunted defence is limping. Is Lotulelei still on the injury list?

I think the Utes may possibly face a stiffer test in Cal than any game they've played so far this year. The BYU & USC games could have easily ended in a loss, and we had home field advantage for both of those. Cal beat Texas back when the longhorns were ranked 11th in the polls, but who isn't beating up on Texas these days? But then again, they lost to the Sun Devils, who many believe aren't as good as their undefeated record indicates.

This one is probably too close to call, with the outcome most likely hinging upon who wins the turnover battle. If Utah coughs up the rock more than twice they're probably toast. I wouldn't be surprised at all if this one goes into OT. I'd love to be optimistic here, but I'm gonna go with my gut on this one.

I haven't heard that. In fact, I just read that the entire team is preparing to play on Saturday without him. Mokofisi is practicing all week as if he's starting. Even IF Lotulelei comes back, he's damaged goods at this point, and not gonna perform at 100%.

This is great news for Cal, who are probably licking their chops watching video of USC carving up our line after Lotulelei left the game.

Utah's biggest problem is going to be how to stop Webb, who has thrown a MINIMUM of 400 yards in every game he's played this season. I think if they can contain him, or at least slow him down they'll win. He's not completely infallible though. He threw 2 interceptions against ASU, and 3 against SDSU...so there's hope.

It ain't over yet. Utah's offense has a very impressive balanced attack. I think this is the best offense in many years.

The DB's are getting worked by a very good passing attack, but we are right there slugging it out.

Whit was pissed. I don't think he called that 1st timeout. Utah had plenty of time to score. Maybe they let a little too much run off. I didn't want them to leave any time left, but they ended up running out.

The team played tough though. Wish we had that field goal back.

rockgremlin
10-01-2016, 06:39 PM
A field goal wouldn't have made a difference. Utah still loses. Bottom line is, there was no excuse for Utah to lose that game. They sat at the 2 yard line for two plays and Cal stonewalled them. They had plenty of chances, but luck couldn't bail them out tonight. Time to regroup and focus on Arizona next week.

I mean, what did you expect, half the team is now on the injured list.

accadacca
10-01-2016, 06:42 PM
They missed a field goal right before the half, which would have given them 26 and only needing a field goal there for the win.

It was a great game... but a real Heartbreaker for Utah.

The Utes can cry tonight and then start preparing for Arizona tomorrow. The PAC 12 is still theirs for the taking. No one is going through the PAC undefeated, so if you are going to lose a game it's better to lose out of division. Utah needs to get healthy.

I for one am not going to sound like BYU fan, always making excuses for the loss. Utah had it right in the palm of their hands on numerous occasions...and choked.

If you're relying on luck and the mistakes of your opponent or the officiating to win games, eventually your luck is gonna run out. That's what happened tonight. Give credit to the Cal defense. They did what they needed to do to win. This one stings, but gotta regroup and move on.

Add to that the comedy of errors that was the second-to-last play, where Williams put the ball right in his TE's hands, and he freaking drops it.

Should have had Moeai block for him and run the ball in himself, hell they were only 2 yards away from a TD ffs.

Game #6 - Arizona vs Utah

The Wildcats will limp into Rice-Eccles this Saturday with numerous injuries. For once, Utah will play a team that is more banged up and disorganized than they are. Arizona has lost numerous starters to injuries. Many of those are players in key positions in both the offense and defence. Arguably the most glaring position suffering the worst injuries is quarterback, where it appears the Wildcats will be starting their THIRD-STRING TRUE FRESHMAN Khalil Tate. This is good news for Utah because Arizona's second string QB is a beast, who is not only their most prolific passer, but is also the team's leading rusher, logging over 100 yards rushing in games against Hawaii and Washington.

Although Utah is far from healthy themselves, they should be staffed up sufficiently enough to manhandle the Wildcats. Coming off of a stinging loss to the Golden Bears last week, the Utes will be looking for redemption against Arizona in an attempt to regain some credibility and momentum they lost in last week's game.

Vegas picks the Utes to win by 10, but I'm gonna take that a bit further. A struggling Arizona team decimated by injuries will be tip-toeing into a hostile environment to play a hungry Utah team with a chip on their shoulder. I see this resulting in a convincing win for Utah.

Week 6: Oregon State Beavers

Let me preface this sermon by pointing out that whatever happened last week in Corvallis was a fluke. If you missed it, basically both Cal and Oregon State sent their defenses home after kickoff, and an offensive circus ensued until the end of regulation, where they decided to put more time (and points) on the board in a crazy overtime affair that resulted in a 3 point Beaver win.

Riding high on the goal line defensive stand that sent Utah home with a loss the previous week, Cal apparently forgot all about how to play any defense at all upon stepping off the bus in Corvallis. The Golden Bears allowed 474 rushing yards and 6 (six!) rushing TDs, including the victory stroll into the end zone by the Beavers less-than-crappy QB in OT to seal the deal.

So, yeah, fluke.

Let me put it this way...the Beavers are in a three-way tie for last place in the Pac12, along with Arizona and the sleepwalking Ducks. Last week's win over Cal was their first Pac12 win in twelve tries. Before that, Colorado and Boise State decimated them.

The Beavers have no QB to speak of. In the last four games their starting QB (Garretson) has thrown ZERO TDs, three interceptions, and has only thrown over 100 yards once. His backup is equally as bad, with ZERO TDs and two interceptions. Truly, their QB situation smells worse than the southern end of a north-bound skunk.

Their running backs are fairly talented, but nothing special. Prior to playing Cal, their leading RB (Nall) only had 211 yards rushing in four games, and he was injured in the Cal game, so he's not going to be at 100% on Saturday.

The Beavers are allowing 432 yards of total offense/game, while scoring only 361 themselves (or only 312 if you throw out the Cal game).

There is rain in the forecast for Saturday's game, so let's hope Utah can muster some kind of ground attack. Hopefully Moss is healthy enough to get the nod, cuz we're gonna need him.

In spite of Utah's injuries, the Utes should be healthy enough to hand the Beavers their fourth loss of the season. Vegas picks Utah as a 10 point favorite, and I cannot disagree.

'Retired' Joe Williams returns to Utes after slew of RB injuries

Running back Joe Williams has returned to the Utah Utes after his retirement a few weeks ago.

A school spokesperson confirmed that Williams was back practicing in Salt Lake City with the team Tuesday. If Williams is feeling up to it, he will play against Oregon State this weekend.

Williams left the team in September because his body was feeling worn out, but after a slew of running back injuries, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham asked his players whether they would be in favor of inviting Williams back to the team. After the team agreed, Whittingham approached Williams.

Currently, Williams is day-to-day and not making a season-long commitment.

The Utes already were without running back Zack Moss when running back Armand Shyne went down against Arizona last weekend with a noncontact injury. On Monday, Whittingham had told KSL.com that Moss would be a game-time decision against Oregon State.

What....?

Joe Williams returning is not a well thought out plan. J'Dub "retired" because he was feeling worn down mentally and physically. And now he's going to embrace the grind that was the source of so much anguish and hardship just one month ago?

He's returning not because of a passionate desire to play but out of sheer desperation from the coaching staff to fill much needed vacancy.

The guy's spent the last month hitting the books and changing dirty diapers, his conditioning can't be too great.

And what about those buttery fingers of his? Promoting the team leader in fumblerooski to starter might be a disaster.

I really want to be positive about this, but there are so, so many red flags. We shall see...(taking deep breath, crossing fingers, knocking on wood).

For Saturday's game vs OSU...The good news is that the Beaver's star RB (Nall) will be playing with an injured ankle, so don't expect any 200+ yard performance out of him this weekend.

The bad news is that the remnants of typhoon Songda are expected to batter Corvallis with damaging winds and flooding rains this weekend. In light of this, I wouldn't expect Williams to be airing out the ball very often. All the more reason to get their RB situation squared away in preparation for what is almost certain to be a slippery, sloppy mud bog. And with king floppy-fingers at running back for Utah, who knows what could happen. It might turn into a turnover fest.

In other news, Davontae Booker outgained Denver's starting RB (C.J. Anderson) in the Bronco's loss to the Chargers this evening. Booker averaged over nine yards/carry, while Anderson could barely muster just over three yards per carry.

I know this because I USED to have C.J. Anderson as a starter on my crappy fantasy team, but just recently benched him because he's put up dismal numbers every week for the last month.
