Aren't you a school teacher as well? Do some of those things ring true in your experience?

To a certain extent. Obviously this is sensationalized like crazy, but I feel like I'm walking on egg shells way more often than I should. Kids are given leeway that they don't deserve and given alternate assignments when all they really need to do is get their butt to school and try. I've been in more than one meeting where someone has said something to the effect of "I'm not/don't fail anyone because it's just not worth it. If they show up and give any effort they get a D- so we can move them on."

On the flip side there are many many students who just get to school, get to work, follow up, come in after school for help and take responsibility for their education. But more and more the blame is being placed on teachers for low scores of students who don't show up or do any work and when you hold them accountable you get to hear from their parents about how their child is different, can't be held to the same standards, and ultimately it's all your fault...and you hear it from all angles, parents, media, etc.

And don't get me started on the new attendance policy....I have a student with literally (just looked it up) 22 absences in my class. 22! We're not even halfway through the school year yet. Guess what the consequences are? NONE! I have another student with 30 tardies. How am I supposed to teach these kids? But at the end of the year guess who takes heat for their low test score...

I love my job and every job has crap they have to deal with, so I deal with it the best I can and move on.

Yes obviously sensationalized - funny and sad at the same time. Kids are too often praised for doing minimal and/or just for showing up. With all of the valuable time wasted on poorly written state exams with questionable grading techniques, gathering useless data on students, I barely had time to spend on my students. I loved teaching Science (and still miss teaching 8th graders) but retired after 30 years as it was more data gathering than teaching. I am still working full time but not in that field any more. Don't even get me started on the new Math/Common Core Math, I gave up when they stopped teaching multiplication tables and started letting them use calculators in elementary school.
