PARADISE PARK, Uintah County — The 10-year-old boy who was missing in the High Uintas was found alive Monday afternoon and was hugging his family, according to on-scene reporters.
Before he was located, Malachi's family said if there's any child that can survive outdoors by himself, it's him.
Malachi had been missing in a remote area for more than 24 hours. He was found in good condition, albeit a little hungry and cold.
Malachi was camping near Paul Lake near the Paradise Park Campground with his family when he went to look for wild mushrooms about 10:30 a.m. Sunday, according to the Uintah County Sheriff's Office.
His family said he was well-dressed for the weather. Lori Matthews, Malachi's aunt, said his father had taught him survival skills. And just recently, Malachi actually practiced what he would do if he ever became lost in the woods.
"Just a week ago, he was camping and he and a friend were playing what would we do if we got lost. And they were burying themselves in leafs, they were building lean-tos. They were doing all the things you'd want them to do if you were lost," she said Monday.
I will tell you it brings great peace to the family knowing there are so many people who care. Both of his parents are extremely grateful there are so many people who have come out to help.–Lori Matthews, Malachi's aunt
A Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter and ATVs were being used to search the rugged area, along with search crews from the Uintah County and Wasatch County sheriff's offices as well as the Ute Indian Tribe.
"We're tasked with trying to think like a 10-year-old would. So we're trying to formulate a plan to make sure we're covering all the areas we think he may have gone," a Uintah County sheriff's spokesman said.
Prior to the time Malachi was found, Matthews said the family is grateful for all the support they've received.
"I will tell you it brings great peace to the family knowing there are so many people who care. Both of his parents are extremely grateful there are so many people who have come out to help," she said.
More details will be posted as they become available.
