The Confederate Flag thing seems to be getting out of control. The flag is absolutely a point of pride for Southerners who have an attachment to the Civil War. It is also a point of pride for redneck racist douchebags. But the great thing about this country is that you can be redneck racist douchebag (of any color) and not go to jail for it.

I don't think the flag should get taken down over government buildings. This country is supposed to be about freedom, even if it is freedom you find distasteful. The confederate flag is not a nazi flags, it has many more meanings than slavery.

The ten commandments however have no business being on government grounds in front of a courtroom. Separation of church and state.

I've been visiting the USA for over 30 years now, and I have never seen in the US the separation between State, Religion and Politics that one sees in post-war Europe. The three are intertwined in the US culture in an unnatural way, and I'm not sure that as a State, you have benefited from it.

I mean no disrespect in the above; just my observation.

The problem of communication by symbol is you're not in control of how others interpret that symbol. Knowing your chosen symbol is offensive to a particular group and you choose to use it anyway is your choice. But it's one that shows sloppy communication and disregard for others.

Certainly the government shouldn't use it's speech representing its people in sloppy and knowingly rude ways.

Matter of law.

Confederate and Nazi flags flown over government buildings: matter of taste and respect. Also, nobody goes to jail for this.

Now that South Carolina has taken down the flag, what do you think they will target and bitch about next?

By the way, is there anything to the fact that the SC State Trooper's uniforms there are Gray? Maybe they should change them!

And FWIW, the flag everyone is crying and bitching about is not even the Confederate flag (Stars and Bars) or the Confederate Battle Flag, it's the Confederate Navy Jack flown by the nearly non-existent Confederate Navy.

It is the Battle Flag that was flying at the South Carolina Capital. The Navy Jack was taken down from The Citadel.

It's actually the battle flag of the army of North Virginia (Robert E. Lee).... So a killer has his picture taken in front of a confederate navy jack and SC is forced to taken down the battle flag of the army of North Virginia.... the stupidity of all this never ceases to amaze......

What reason is there for it to be up in the first place? Why should it have a place of honor in the U.S.? Good riddance I say.

We need to ban bald people--they are an aryan symbol.....

democrats want to ban a part of American history, because they were and are the ones who still perpetuate slavery.

It has nothing to do with a flag.

Once you start down the road of banning, that which offends some, there is no end.

That is why we have a first Amendment.

Banning is a slippery slope... I might not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

And so begins the war against the US Flag.

So, it's okay to fly the gay pride flag, but now any other flag creates tension and/or exudes racism. Hmmm...

Who banned it? No law is stopping any of you from hopping into your General Lee themed vehicles and swimwear.

The rest of us thinking you are a jackass for doing so however doesn't infringe upon your First Amendment rights one damn bit.

The South lost the Civil War...why is there a need to continue to fly their flag? There are many people in the south who would emphatically support succession tomorrow if any serious action to do so were to start up. Flying the CSA flag just supports that mindset..in my opinion.

I would be against flying the flag over the State Capitol and over the American Flag, but since it was at a Confederate War Memorial, I have no problem with it.

Ultimately though, it was the state of South Carolina itself whom decided to take the flag down and to put it in a museum. It was there choice. It was a bipartisan decision (the Republican governor of South Carolina was the one that pushed the state legislature to take down the flag), so I don't know why people are trying to make it into a Republican vs. Democrat issue.

Don't be ridiculous. The flags for those countries resumed their spot on the flagpole once Hilter was ousted and Germany knocked back into their own country.

seems the countries I mentioned lost a war as well.

Their flags are not banned by the victor(United States),

I guess you didn't pick up on the British were harsh slavemasters.

The correlation is, The confederate states had their flag banned in government places, because a group of folks find it offensive.

The US also defeated the British who had slaves, yet no cry to ban the British flag.

This flag issue has gone beyond the ridiculous. I have not posted because I didn't want to get into a war of words with people who don't even live (nor were they raised) in this neck of the woods, and therefore do not fully know of history, customs and the way of life down South. People are different in the South (I lived in Utah for 16 yrs) and they are friendly, amiable and most would give you the shirt off their back. I don't care for the redneck portrayal, because it doesn't fit but a few. This boy who did the massacre in South Carolina was photographed holding a Confederate flag, but there is another photo showing him burning the American flag. I haven't seen one news cast with THAT particular photo. Now, the past suddenly needs to be destroyed, yet we can celebrate other "diverse" interests (ie) gay marriage, transgendered folks, and the list goes on. It has gotten so ridiculous here in New Orleans, that the mayor (white) has now decided to jump on the anti Confederate bandwagon, and wants to remove anything in the city that has a Confederate link. First up is the Robert E Lee memorial that has stood for more than 100 years in Lee Circle. In Memphis, they want to dig up Gen Forrest AND his wife and move them out of the city. I don't ask "what next" because I don't want to know. I am afraid that "next" will be the nation's very own forefathers who owned slaves. Now don't misunderstand, there is nothing about slavery that is right nor ever will it be right. But, this is history and it cannot be changed. Hopefully it is something that can be learned from and not repeated ever again. (For the record, most men who fought for the South in the Civil War did not own slaves.) Ah....another "next". Some idiot on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge wants a certain plant removed that is indigenous to our area. The plant's name? Confederate Jasmine. Really?? I am seriously thinking about moving to Texas because they will truly be a self sufficient nation if they decide to secede! :2thumbs: :haha:
