Flash flood warnings were very high this weekend in the Zion area, but the radar looked good and so did the skies for the most part.

We did Subway on Friday the 12th and it had relatively low water from what we remember on our other trips through.

We hit Orderville the next day, I'll write up a report on that. No harnesses for either of us and we seemed to do fine, but gloves were a must.

I think they added a couple of miles to the canyon on the exit hike, because we were totally beat.

Check the closure schedule of Kolob Terrace road. I believe it's closed Monday - Thursday 9 am - noon and then 1 - 4 pm, and on Friday it's 9 am - noon

It was another fun trip, thanks. I think that might be my last trip down subway though, that exit and those miles of stepping on boulders are just too hard on my knees.

How long has that log been there??

I went through two weeks ago and that wasn't there. Did someone haul it up there or did it get washed down you think?

That looks like the log that was by the last rappel. Looking at the pictures I do not see it by the last rappel like it was in April but I could be wrong.

Here is a shot at the falls above the last rappel, I don't think there was a log anywhere there. We each had to make the jump.

I just checked my pics and apparently I was incorrect. That log was there two weeks ago. Weird. You would of thought I would remember that.... (Losing my mind!)

Anyways....

While we are on the subject, what about the Log Room? Doesn't that log fall down from time to time and then get replaced, or stood back up?

That same log has been there for many years. It wasn't there when we used to do the canyon decades ago, but it's been there for at least 12-13 years or so.

That log has been there more like 20 years. It became iconic to the Subway when Fatalli used it in a pretty famous photograph titled "North Pole".

The logs that wash out and are replaced are the ones where you made the jump across the canyon. In "normal" conditions that is not a jump and a log will provide a walkway. The walkway is usually provided by hikers coming up from the bottom, because they require the log to access the upper section of the Subway. Keyhole falls is the obstacle going up that stops most enthusiastic hikers coming from the bottom.

FWIW: here is a picture of Fatali's North Pole photograph.

Yes.

The park service hauls out the old log whenever it falls down, then replaces it with a fresh looking log. That is where all of the Subway lottery fees go.

This happened most recently on Memorial Day, when a member of the military was asked to select the tree in question. I believe it is now referred to as "The Captain's Log."

Hope that helps.

That's a joke, right? Please tell me that's a joke...

I know Beech has drone video of them flying the new log into place... but is too shy to post it!

I originally brought the drone down to fly me out of the brutal exit hike, but I spent all of the battery lifting that log out.
