This is a nice 1/2 day canyon tucked in between the fin shaped Navajo Sandstone cliffs above the Hickman Bridge area in Capitol Reef. The canyon resembles Zion NP in places. Thanks to Ryan at RoadTripRyan for providing the beta on this canyon.
The 1000 foot climbup has some great views along the way. We chose to break the lower section of the South drainage descent into two rappels - 60 and 75 feet rather than attempt down climbing the thing. The down climb looks doable by the highly skilled although with considerable exposure in places. The rappels are fun and were anchored off of some small trees. We extended the webbing on the 75 foot rappel to facilitate a clear rope pull. The edges up there are quite friable and easily grooved. The short, tight and skinny section is a real surprise. It had some water and mud from the big deluge the day before and that sort of forced us to stem up a ways to get through. This is a very fun section. Much too short! The last rappel, about 100 feet total, drops over two ledges on the way down. We extended the webbing on this one also to reduce the grooving.
Thanks to my Canyoneering Partners Jessica, Dejah, Jeremy, Justin and Lorin for a great day and for taking some great pictures.
