Just talking with a friend in Grand County SAR, they were involved in 111 call outs last year, a record. This does not include SAR's inside the National Parks.
Be safe out there.

Is this a lot of "self-taught" canyoneers?
Or idiots who think a cell phone will solve everything?

Undoubtedly a bit of everything, including mountain bikers, ATVers, 4x4ers, hikers, canyoneers, climbers, rafters, canoeists, boaters, and even city folk and cowboys. Unfortunately, one of my friends was one of those 111 and it happened when I was there. He at least, was highly experienced.
This is off the Grand County SAR site, but it only has 2001 through 2010:
77502
I've heard that per capita Grand County has more SAR operations than anyone else in the West (and they are the busiest SAR team in Utah). Kudos to those on the SAR teams.

What Scott said, the 111 was total call outs.
