It's too bad, losing Sitake and Tuiaki, but I assumed that Sitake was gone sooner than later, anyway. I thought it would be as a head coach. The Utes will miss him as a recruiter and a coach, but it's just part of the business. Next coach(Morgan Scalley) up.

Could be addition by subtraction. Word is, DC was not well liked on the hill.

Another OC is not the best news though....

Iceaxe

I do believe DC was the cause of the train wreck at QB as Thompson was his boy but Wilson is the better QB. I'm willing to bet Wilson now stays at Utah and is named QB1 going into spring practice. Dennis Erickson is also still on staff and could become OC again, I never understood that move to begin with as Erickson is a damn good coach.

The Desert News is basically saying Monson is full of shit, which is often the case. The SL Trib goes head-to-head with the D News, this should be good, as a general rule the D News does a much better job reporting sports.

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865618560/Source-Kyle-Whittingham-not-being-forced-out-as-Utes-football-coach.html?pg=all

SALT LAKE CITY — Despite mounting speculation that a departure may be forthcoming, a source close to theUniversity of Utah athletics (http://www.deseretnews.com/sports/utah-utes) department said there’s no validity to reports that head football coach Kyle Whittingham is being forced out of his position.

The source also said that a Friday morning meeting between Whittingham and Utah Athletic Director Chris Hill was “standard operating procedure” — a discussion between the two that takes place at the end of each season — and not a response to the recent departures of three assistant football coaches.

In the past week, defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake and defensive line coach Ilaisa Tuiaki left for Oregon State to join Gary Andersen’s staff; and offensive coordinator Dave Christensen accepted a position at Texas A&M.

The exits followed Utah’s most successful season since joining the Pac-12 in 2011. The Utes (http://www.deseretnews.com/sports/utah-utes) went 9-4 overall and 5-4 in Pac-12 play. They capped things off with a 45-10 win over Colorado State in the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 20.

Whittingham, who has been the head coach of the Utes for the past 10 seasons and with the program for 21 consecutive years overall, has had a hand in 170 victories in his tenure with the team — more than any football coach in school history. His record at the helm is 85-43.

The relationship between Hill and Whittingham reportedly grew tense, in part, over renegotiation discussions involving the coach’s contract and a department decision that went into effect last summer that future deals for football assistants would be one year in length. The latter was later amended to two years for coordinators.

All three coaches who left Utah reportedly received multi-year offers at their new destinations. The Deseret News learned that Sitake received a verbal offer of three years at $750,000 annually (with incentives that make it $800,000 per year) to stay with the Utes. Another source, though, said that Oregon State gave Sitake an even more lucrative contract.

Whittingham and Hill could not be reached for comment as the saga gained increased national media attention on Saturday.

Yahoo! Sports asked (http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/there-s-reportedly-serious-tension-between-kyle-whittingham-and-utah-s-ad-031440032.html): “Could the Kyle Whittingham era be coming to an end at Utah?” and Bruce Feldman, college football reporter for FOX Sports, sent out a Tweet that read: “Hearing situation between Whittingham & Utah AD is awful. Staffers wouldn’t be surprised if KW gets forced out & are hoping prez steps in.”

I think there is about a 5% chance of Whit leaving. He is rooted in town, his family is here, his kids(think he still has one in HS?) are here, including married and rooted as well. I just don't see him picking up and heading somewhere else for the last few years of his career, uprooting his family to do that.

I don't think there is a shot in Hell that Hill will fire him, so that's that.

Hell will freeze over before Whit takes a job, any job, with the Cougars.

When Chris Hill issued his recent Witt is our coach press release this "unofficial" statement was tacked to the bottom of it

"Utah athletics department spokeswoman Liz Abel anticipates that Whittingham will release a statement by Tuesday."

This would in effect pretty much put the final nail in Hill's coffin, which is what appears to be causing the rapid demise of Utah's football program. When guys are turning down $800K and a stable, well respected position to get the hell out then it doesn't smell like just a money problem.

They are just doing their jobs. I have to assume Whitt could not care less about what the masses want/feel they deserve. He's trying to enjoy the small amount of family time he's afforded right now. All well trying to decide on an OC & DC, including the waves that may make on staff.

Don't necessarily agree that they "signed up for this." All of this drama would still be there even if Utah was still in the Mountain West conf. The fact that the Utes joined the Pac12 doesn't amplify the enmity between Hill and Whit.

Iceaxe

I believe all this drama will have one big positive on next years program... I believe Wilson will return for his senior year with his old confidence and aggression and in return Utah gets a very experienced senior QB that will easily rank as one of the top three in the PAC-12. I don't believe Christensen was a loss for the Utes. More of an improvement through subtraction.

It also looks like Booker will now return for his senior season.

I'm thinking the new DC comes from within, perhaps Morgan Scalley.

And I would not be surprised to see Dennis Erickson back as the OC, provided he has interest in the job. Erickson is getting old and is really only coaching for love of the game. He already has his millions, his national championships and two coach of the year awards. If not Erickson than perhaps Roderick.

I bet at least one of the coordinaters comes from in house.

Thoughts?

Deuce
01-12-2015, 11:38 AM
Booker apparently just tweeted that he's coming back, that is great news!

I don't think Erickson has any interest in being the OC. I think his "demotion" from OC was due to his not having interest in the job. I just don't see how he would have stayed on, if he felt it was some sort of slight. He's too good, has too much juice to "just suck it up." I think he's content in his current position, just likes being around and the responsibility he has. I really like having him on the staff, think he's a wealth of knowledge and helps recruiting.

I would not be surprised if both coordinators come from within, but think that Whitt is making sure that he is making the best decision to help the team win. That includes seeing who's out there, who would have interest and fit, then making the decision.

The Booker decision is BIG....

Defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake (http://www.osubeavers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=750127&SPID=127145&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=30800&ATCLID=209820624&Q_SEASON=2015) and linebacker coachIlaisa Tuiaki (http://www.osubeavers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=750127&SPID=127145&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=30800&ATCLID=209820759&Q_SEASON=2015) have hit the Utah recruiting class, and hit it hard, while running back coach Telly Lockette (http://www.osubeavers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=750127&SPID=127145&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=30800&ATCLID=209829704&Q_SEASON=2015), formerly of South Florida, fills in gaps with his "Sunshine State" connections.

That trend will continue during a massive official visit lineup this weekend for the Beavers, as Utah commit and Rivals two-star inside linebacker Thor Katoa (http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Thor-Katoa-148438) is set to make the trip to Corvallis.

"I'm excited. It should be fun," he said. "I'm definitely interested in going over there, because I was recruited by Kalani and Tuiaki out of high school from Utah. I built a pretty strong relationship with them. I haven't de-committed from Utah or anything. I'm still committed to 'The U' as of right now, but we'll see after this trip how it goes, see how Oregon State is."

Katoa admits he can see himself making the switch in the near future, but needs to build a connection with the Beavers that goes beyond his relationship with two defensive coaches.

"It's all kind of new. I don't know too much about Oregon State, the college," he explained. "All I know is the two coaches that recruited me (at Utah) will be over there and I have really good relationship with them, a strong chance of playing for them. I know what kind of defense they run and how good those coaches are."

Playing in the Pac-12 seemed like pipe dream a year ago, when Katoa was a raw defensive player with no college offers. However, he spent the summer training with a former football player at Texas A&M and emerged as a highly productive defensive standout.
As a senior, Katoa registered 139 tackles, 16.5 tackles-for-loss and four sacks.

"I spent the offseason just going at it, because going into my senior season I didn't have any offers, so I was pretty motivated to get that done," he said. "The whole offseason I was just training as hard as I could."

Katoa's focus on working out has continued this offseason. He has added 35 pounds to his frame and now stands at 6-foot-2, 255 pounds. That amount of growth has many coaches believing his college future lies in at the defensive end position.

"I've gained like 30 pounds. (Sitake) and Tuiaki, if I keep gaining weight, would stick me at D-end, stand-up defensive end," he explained. "It shouldn't be that much of a difference. My sophomore and junior year in high school I played outside linebacker."
Oregon State continues to chip away at the Utah recruiting class. It appears the Beavers have the inside track to snag another one in Katoa, as long as the visit goes well this weekend.

^^^This is the reason it is important to ensure your entire coaching staff is well taken care of. Hell sakes, the entire coaching staff for Oregon State was poached from Utah (Gary Andersen in a roundabout fashion, but still...).

And what does Utah get? A former Utah quarterback.... Howcome we're not out there poaching good assistant coaches from good programs? I can't believe it's because nobody out there wants to join our program. It has to be something else. Someone enlighten me.

We actually do our share of poaching.... for example... when Dave Christian joined the Utes he brought Kendall Thompson with him who he had originally recruited to Wyoming.

I'm curious when Utah fills out their coaching staff this year to see what will happen. Speaking of which, when are we going to get a new OC and DC?

Whitt said they would look inside their own program, but not that it was a done deal.

Inside the program they have: Dennis Erickson, Aaron Roderick and Morgan Scalley to choose from, and I don't think Erickson is really interested so that leaves Roderick and Scalley and maybe Sharrieff Shah, but that would be a reach.

What a relief: Utah drops $3.3M on stadium restroom additions

When you gotta go, you gotta go.

With that in mind, the Utah Board of Trustees is making an investment for the people, approving $3.3 million to add two new restrooms to Rice-Eccles Stadium, according to Matt Piper and Kyle Goon of the Salt Lake Tribune.

The new digs won't include gold-plated sinks or platinum toilets, just more sinks and toilets.

The approved blueprint will make way for new men's rooms in both the stadium's northeast and northwest corners with a total of 88 new toilets and 45 new sinks.

Utah athletic director Chris Hill said the additions are being implemented to ease congestion caused by fans walking to the west or east concourse to use the restrooms.

"We're trying to make sure we build it so that it's in the right place for a long time," Hill said.

Construction is expected to be completed before the 2015 season-opener against Michigan.

Dominique Hatfield is counting down to kickoff by performing acts of aggravated robbery: http://www.ksl.com/index.php?sid=35317606&nid=148&title=dominique-hatfield-arrested-for-investigation-of-aggravated-robbery

SALT LAKE CITY — A key player with the University of Utah football team has been arrested for investigation of aggravated robbery after police say he robbed a man at knife point. Dominique Taishun Hatfield, 20, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Wednesday, according to jail records. Unified Police Chief Deputy Justin Hoyal said about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Hatfield met another man at a car wash, 655 W. 3900 South. The victim responded to an online classified ad and thought he was going to buy an X-Box, Hoyal said. Hatfield identified himself in the ad as David Wilkins, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report. "When the victim and suspect met the suspect produced a knife and demanded the victim’s money. The victim complied and gave the suspect cash. The suspect then fled on foot," according to police. Hatfield ran off with about $180 to the nearby Mountain Shadow Apartments, according to the jail report. A short time later, the victim arranged for his wife to call Hatfield back and inquiry about buying a phone he was also selling, the report stated. They arranged to meet at the same place her husband was robbed, only this time Unified police officers were also there waiting. They watched as Hatfield walked from the apartment complex to the car wash, the jail report stated.

"UPD was present and when the suspect arrived he was taken into custody without incident. The victim positively identified Dominique Hatfield as the suspect who had robbed him earlier," Hoyal said. A spokeswoman with the University of Utah Athletic Department said all of the coaches were out of town Wednesday and she only knew what was being reported by the media. However, in matters like this she said the school typically will let the legal system run its course, and the U. may have more to say once head coach Kyle Whittingham returns from vacation. Some of Hatfield's teammates reacted on social media Wednesday as word of his arrest Hatfield is a junior from California who switched from receiver to cornerback last season. After an impressive showing during spring camp he was expected to be a starter. Last season he started 10 games and earned 38 tackles. He had an interception and nine pass break-ups. One of the highlights for him last season was a 20-yard interception return for a touchdown that secured Utah’s win over Colorado. He had a season-high seven tackles against Washington State.

Charges dropped against former Ute Dominique Hatfield
By Josh Furlong
July 16th, 2015 @ 10:26pm

SALT LAKE CITY — The state of Utah has dropped all charges against former University of Utah football player Dominique Hatfield Thursday, citing evidence questions. Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill dropped charges against Hatfield, saying the prosecution needed further evidence for a case to move forward. "Since the case was filed with the court, new evidence has been received and examined that casts doubt on the defendant's guilt of the crimes as alleged in the original information," Gill said in the state's motion to dismiss the case. "This evidence will require further investigation before proceeding with the prosecution in this matter."

Hatfield was arrested earlier this month after allegedly robbing an individual at knifepoint and stealing money from the victim who was looking to buy an Xbox from a classified ad. Prosecutors reviewed surveillance footage from a nearby Maverik convenience store and found that Hatfield was not a "principle" person involved with the incident. "We received additional information when we filed the charges that indicated that Mr. Hatfield was not the principle involved in the actual robbery," Salt Lake County District Attorney chief deputy Blake Nakamura told KSL. "The additional information has caused us to look into some other areas of information, and we're continuing to do that. Until we really review all the information, we won't be able to conclude this matter."
"It was a video tape created by the people at the Maverik that depicts the person very clearly, who is identified as the armed robber," Hatfield's attorney Greg Skordas told KSL. "And that person, very clearly, is not Dominique Hatfield." Skordas said he doesn't expect the armed robbery charges to be filed again against Hatfield, but that misdemeanor charges relating to stolen cellphones could be raised at a later time. "Whether the district attorney's office decides to still run with that remains to be seen. But they dismissed that charge for now," he said.

Hatfield was dismissed from the University of Utah football program on July 10 after head coach Kyle Whittingham said he had developed "further concerns" that lead for his dismissal. Whittingham was not available for comment Thursday. Skordas said he hopes the University of Utah will give Hatfield a second chance based on the recent developments of the alleged incident. "He lost not only his position on the team, he lost his scholarship," Skordas said. "He's home in California and doesn't have the ability to attend college without that scholarship. I'm hoping someone will take a second look at that decision."

It benefits the university, as they don't have him representing them on the field. There is obviously more to this story, stuff the coaches know, that make them feel like he is more risk than reward at this point.

After being arrested on very serious charges, getting out and a few days later, Domo makes what appears to be another questionable decision AGAIN. When do you draw the line? I am fairly confident that neither the coaching staff or the powers that be at the University, want such an individual representing them, which is what having him on the field does.

I know that I don't know the entire story. I know the coaching staff knows far more than any of us. If they are saying he's not worth the chance at this point, kid better get his head straight. Sounds like Domo has been given some hoops to jump through that may allow him to get back into good standing, that's a gift in my opinion.

Side note, who's paying for Greg Skordas? I assume he's representing Domo pro bono, but that's a Hell of a deal.

Anyone have thoughts re: the Chris Hill interview?

I totally understand his stance. I also agree that there isn't a huge outrage from Utes fans wanting the Rivalry Game. I think this has more to do with the thought that they're "sticking it" to BYU by not playing the game, as I don't think there is any argument that the game, meaning a P5 scheduling a G5/G5 scheduling a P5, is more important to BYU.

I would like to see the game continue, but really don't have some outrage or get it done mentality about it. If it happens, great....if not, meh.

Coaches: Jim Harbaugh is in for a rude awakening at Utah

The Summer of Harbaugh officially ends Thursday night as the spotlight shifts from Michigan's entertaining new coach to the team he puts on the field. Jim Harbaugh has skillfully made himself the story while he molds his first Michigan squad, but his true evaluation begins against Utah in Salt Lake City.

In talking to coaches around the country about what they expect from Harbaugh's return to the college ranks, they were not optimistic about the Wolverines' chances, and in some instances, that's putting it mildly.

Part of that is a credit to the Utes; another part is that many coaches just don't know what to expect from Michigan so early in the season.

Whittingham has yet to say if Hatfield will play Friday vs. Utah State, but did say his corner back will not be made available to the media.

New field turf is going in now!

https://html1-f.scribdassets.com/4u6uabwdhc4qdmnc/images/1-ac8bac9680.jpg

--

Utah football: New field for Cal game will include alternating greens, ‘UTES’ in north end zone

The next time somebody takes the field at Rice-Eccles Stadium, they'll do it literally.

And then they'll bring back a new one.

Utah will rip out the old turf and install a new playing surface before it hosts Cal on Oct. 10, tweaking the design to include alternating shades of green, a red-bordered sideline and "UTES," instead of "UTAH," spelled out in the north end zone.

The school has also opted for FieldTurf's "CoolPlay" system, which stadium director Mark Burk said will lower the average temperature on the field 10 to 15 degrees on a hot summer day.

"Since we're replacing it, we decided to go with their latest technology," he said.

That wasn't the motivating factor, though. Rather, Utah felt after fall camp, Fan Fest and the Utes' opener against Michigan that the seventh-year field was "starting to get into that marginal area," Burk said.

It still met safety standards, he said, and Utah could have played on it this season and next, but maintenance was becoming an obstacle.

Said Burk: "The University administration, along with FieldTurf, determined it was in both's best interest to make a change."

Utah's soon-to-be-old field was installed in early 2009, after the Utes won the Sugar Bowl. That cost about $700,000, Burk said, and the new field will be cheaper.

The expected lifespan is 7-10 years.

It will differ from the 2009 field in six basic ways:

1 • The U. opted for a variegated look, similar to the coloring at Utah State's Maverik Stadium, with green and summer green alternating every five yards except in the 10 yards between the 45-yard lines.

2 • The north end zone will read "UTES" instead of "UTAH," a recent alteration to the design that eliminates the redundancy of the "UTAH" newly painted on the Einar Nielsen Fieldhouse roof (http://www.sltrib.com/home/2800829-155/fan-raises-15k-to-paint-utah).

3 • The field will be bordered in red instead of white, except in front of the team boxes (the space between the 25-yard lines), where it will remain white.

4 • The colors of the Pac-12 logos between the 20- and 30-yard lines will be reversed, so that red is the dominant color and white is the accent. "To make it a little more Utah-ish," Burk said.

5 • A layer of "CoolPlay" cork will sit atop the black crumb rubber infill, absorbing less of the sun's heat while still providing a cushion effect.

6 • Utah will play on FieldTurf's latest fiber technology, used by the Seattle Seahawks, New England Patriots, Notre Dame and Ohio State, among others.

A tentative plan called for Utah to begin removal of the old turf Wednesday, but rain Tuesday might delay work. Removal will take about four days.

Then they'll examine the base, and then they'll begin the 10-day installation, which, in a pinch, they can do in seven. The hope is to have it in place more than a week before the Bears visit.

The U. sold pieces of the previous field in a commemorative box, and licensing and marketing director Brett Eden said they plan to get pieces of this inaugural Pac-12 field into the retail market, too.

He's not sure how that'll look, though, and he's happy to hear your ideas at brett.eden@aux.utah.edu.

I really thought Utah should have started Hanson last game for several reasons. The first being Utah should beat Fresno no matter who is QB. If Hanson is your future it would have been great to get him the experience. It would be good to see how he played on game day. Thompson just plain sucks....

Offensive line needs to play well. Balanced offense. Don't give up big plays and win the turnover battle.

Oh and Wilson will be behind center and that is most likely the only way they win this game.

I also am in disagreement about the Utes losing to BYU if they played today. That's not even being a homer. Rosen played TERRIBLE, just like a freshman. The Utah lines, both sides are better than UCLA. Secondary is also better....hell, the defense as a whole.

Iceaxe
09-22-2015, 07:54 AM
I wish Utah had UCLA in the early part of the year while Rosen was still making dumbass Freshman mistakes. He will be pretty seasoned by the time the Utes see him.

accadacca
09-22-2015, 01:08 PM
Don't forget about UCLA's running backs, which might be the best in the conference. They racked up 300 yards and 2 TD's against BYU. Paul Perkins had 219 yards, averaging 8.4 per carry. When he got gassed they put in the backup Starks who racked up 81 yards at 11.6 per carry. I do agree that Utah has a better defense, but still these backs are damn good.

As for the Ducks I do agree that they are beatable, but Utah will need to play a nearly perfect game and that has not happened yet.

The Ducks have a terrible D so far this year. Eastern Washington hung 42 on them. And Georgia State put up 28. That's like playing Weber and Southern Utah.

Soooo..... our D needs to hold the duck offense to a reasonable number to keep our offense and special team's within striking range.

If I'm betting I'll take Utah and the 14 points. I think the betting line is way out of whack on this game. As for a straight up win I like the Utes chances, I'd put them at 40%. The Utes are catching the ducks at a good time, I'll up my odds ar 50% if the ducks are forced to start their QB2.

“Coach says, ‘Hey run the fake.’ I look up and it’s fourth and 13 and I say, ‘Crikey I’m 14 yards back — do the math, I’ve got about 30 yards just to get to the marker.’ I told the boys to keep blocking for me. I’m not the quickest bloke. If I get some good blocks I’ll be able to get there, that’s what I told them."---Tom Hackett

Ohio State and Utah meeting in a big bowl would be very interesting considering the coaching history.

Add to that Ohio State is not a very good team and is barely squeaking out wins over really bad teams.

Michigan State barely beat Purdue at home and Oregon almost beat them. Both were home games.

Baylor and TCU look legit so far...

Hopefully it won't go to the teams head.

Cal is averaging 43 ppg. Worried?
