It is a contentious issue where I live. On one hand, natural gas from fracking is said to be the possible economic salvation of the area in which I live (there really is no industry here other than the energy industry). Natural gas is said to be clean burning as well. On the other hand, in a few towns south of here, some residents became extremely alarmed when they could light their tap water on fire.

It is claimed that methane in water is still safe to drink, but there is some concern of houses exploding. As far is known however, it has only happened once.

Natural gas has a lot going for it, but hopefully it can be done safely. A lot of people want fracking and natural gas wells, but just not in their own backyard.

Personally I'd be OK with it in non-roadless areas around here as long as the gas companies are willing to be liable if any ground water is contaminated, especially in people's homes.
