Having the BYU football team follow this pattern in November is pissing off the educated fans.

HUGE win for the Runnin' Utes!

#8 Wichita State's 35 game regular season winning streak ends at the Huntsman Center. The Running Utes had them in regulation when Witchita State made three 3 pointers out of nowhere. The Utes got them in OT though.

Good game by the Utes. Their win should help both programs this year as the Shocks needed a good road test and got one. (I went to WSU as an undergrad and KU as a grad student, so I am a fan of college basketball :nod: ).

Overall, it was an outstanding game to attend. The mint brownies and maple bars were very good, some girl made a half court shot at half time for $5K, and to my surprise... I didn't get beat up or verbally assaulted after the game. :haha:

UNLV always plays Utah very tough, but then again, UNLV has struggled against teams this season such as Sam Houston State and Morehead State, and clearly the Utes should be a much better team than those.

It was shocking to see how bad the Bruins played! That might have been the easiest win of the season so far...even Carroll College put up more of a fight.

Sweet to see the Utes playing as a whole team especially since D Wright could easily steal the show if he wanted to.

Breaking down the conference races

Pac-12

Pick: Arizona. The league still runs through Tucson, though the Wildcats lack a go-to player. That could make things interesting.

Disappointment: UCLA. Maybe it was unfair to expect more out of a Bruins team that had to replace so much, but UCLA has been run out of the gym by every good team it has played.

Sleeper: Utah. The Utes' defense ranks 17th in the nation in scoring and 18th in rebounding margin; the offense stands sixth in field-goal percentage. Somewhere, Rick Majerus is smiling at such a balanced squad.

Player of the year: Delon Wright or Tyrone Wallace. It's a push between the Utah and California guards right now, with each putting up big numbers. Utah's team success might give Wright the edge.

Coach of the year: Larry Krystowiak. The "other Coach K?" How about "Another Coach K?" Krystowiak has systematically restored the Utes' program in his four years, culminating in their best ranking since 1998.

I don't know the answer for the two free throws but usually there was a technical called on a player for an illegal uniform (wearing long sleeves), shirt color under the jersey, player number doesn't match the one in the book, or some technical rule regarding the appearance of the uniform that violates the NCAA rules. There are other possibilities but those are the most common pre-game technicals.

It is actually Kyle Collingsworth that is looking to break the triple-double record. He currently has 4 this season which ties an NCAA single season record. I would imagine that he will get the record by the end of the season. Haws is the scoring machine and may break Jimmer Fredetts record.

Going to be a very telling week for the Runnin Utes.

If they can keep their wits about them, and not let either team get in their heads like Arizona did, they should be fine. One thing that makes me nervous is how little experience the Utes have in close games down the stretch. Too many blow outs and coasting to victory. Did well with Wichita State and BYU, but haven't had a close game since...

Not me... it lessens coaching, discipline and teamwork. Back in the day before the shot clock a well coached and well disciplined group playing as a team could often defeat a group comprised of far superior athletes. I think the current college shot clock strikes a happy medium. If you want to see great athletes run up and down the floor tossing down monster dunk after monster dunk go watch the NBA.

I think the deciding factor will come down to confidence. If the Utes let them get in their heads and get intimidated by them, the team will play tight and it will get ugly--again.

Also gonna need Bachynski and Olsen to step up and help underneath against their big guys.

I really hate to say this....but I think they're going concrete camping for the opportunity to watch Arizona lock up the PAC-12. I really, really hope I'm wrong.

It would be sweet to see the home crowd chanting "over-rated!" back at Arizona like how their fans treated the Utes when they played in Tucson. Not many vegas betting sites are making predictions this early. The one site that I found results for had the Utes favored by 1.5 points.

Utah is a 1.5 favor all over Vegas. AZ and Utah have both been unbeatable at home and stumbled on the road. Also I think Utah's big men have improved a lot since the first game. I'll take Utah in a nail biter.

MILLER: REFEREES RUINED THE PAC-12 “GAME OF THE YEAR”


It was a game that was dubbed as the Pac-12 “Game of the Year,” it was a battle of top-15 teams and it was Senior Night honoring the players that have helped revitalize a program.

The stakes were high, the crowd was amped and then the game was… well, it was tarnished.

For brief moments during Arizona’s 63-57 win over Utah (http://www.dailyutahchronicle.com/2015/02/28/mens-hoops-runnin-utes-give-up-late-lead-fall-to-no-7-arizona/) we saw what it could have been, no, what it should have been — big time threes, slick drives and big defensive stands. The rest of the game (which sadly represented most of it) was filled with whistles, free throws and the image of the officials staring endlessly at the scorer’s table monitor.

Utah head coach Larry Krystkowiak said postgame that it was a great college basketball game.

No, Coach. It wasn’t, but it really should have been.

For the first time this season, and possibly this century, the Huntsman Center was full before tip-off. Emotional tributes to seniors Dallin Bachynski and Delon Wright were shown, glow sticks sparkled through the arena during intros and the crowd was fired up.

The fans knew the importance, they were ready for a bruising battle, but then the whistles came. Call after call was made and by halftime 25 fouls had been whistled. Things didn’t get much better in the second half either, as the refs added 21 more to their tally.

It became exhausting.

You know how the last minute of a basketball game can become excruciating with the constant fouling as one team desperately, and most of the time unsuccessfully, tries to give themselves a chance to catch up? Well, those watching Utah and Arizona got to experience that for nearly an entire game. Ladies and gentleman, your 2015 Pac-12 “Game of the Year.”

Anytime a player got touched, breathed on, hell, had somebody make a movement resembling a guarding position towards them, a whistle was blown. The game soon turned into a parade to the free-throw line, to the chagrin of pretty much everyone.

“It seemed like everything was a foul, every little bump,” Wright said.
He wasn’t wrong.

And it wasn’t just one way, both teams had their fair share of what-the-hell calls go against them and the frustration slowly built. It simply killed every little bit of momentum to the contest.

All the whistles and all the fouls made the game move at a snail’s pace. There was hardly any offensive rhythm from either side and a game that some students spent close to 48 hours waiting in line for, turned to something that was being endured, not enjoyed.

It’s a shame really. After weeks of anticipation, three men in striped jerseys decided to put their stamp on the game, and then do it over and over and over again.

“I don’t think we have fouled that much all year,” Krystkowiak said. “That’s what made it difficult. It’s hard to find your rhythm on a game like that.”

It made it difficult to watch too. With a little luck, Arizona and Utah will match up one last time in the Pac-12 Tournament championship game.

Hopefully then fans will get to see that “great” game we all waited, and are still waiting, for.

BYU (http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/team/_/id/252/byu-cougars) [23-8 (13-5), RPI: 43, SOS: 80] The Cougars are still on the bubble, and probably rightfully so. One win -- even a win as good as the one BYU got on Feb. 28, when it spoiled Gonzaga's senior night -- does not an entire resume make. That said, if we were on the committee, it would be a personal goal to get BYU in the tournament. For starters, the Cougars are one of the nation's most entertaining teams, with two of the nation's best (and most entertaining offensive players). At the very least, they should be good for an 85-83 game or two on the first weekend. But after the win in Spokane, there is also a very rational case to be made. All of BYU's losses came by single digits. Several came in overtime. This is a function as much of skill (or lack thereof) as luck (or lack thereof). Advanced analytics universally love BYU, and rightfully so -- this is a good team whose resume doesn't quite do it justice. Hopefully, the committee sees past the team sheet. Barring a disaster in the WCC tournament, we think it probably will.

Utah spends almost the entire season in the top 15 and unranked Oregon sweeps in to claim the #2 spot.

The Utes have done a good job of shutting the best player of any given team down this year, but it seems like someone else always steps up to hand it to the Utes. As has been the case with Randall for the Cardinal. I just hope they have their other bases covered tonight as well.

BYU waiting to see if their season will continue...

I watched part of the game with the Zags...entertaining for sure. On one hand, I think they should get in, but on the other, I would love to rub it in the face of the guy I work with that couldn't say a good thing about the Utes if his life depended on it. Hard to have an intelligent discussion with someone like that.

As of two weeks ago, the Cougars were one of the strangest bubble teams in recent memory. BYU has the leading scorer in its school history in Tyler Haws, who passed Jimmer Fredette in late February, a player who tied the NCAA's all-time single-season triple-double record in Kyle Collinsworth, and one of the nation's 10 most efficient offenses. Analytically, the Cougars rated out as a top-30 team. Bracketologically, BYU was a non-starter. How did this come to be? All of the Cougars' losses came by single digits and left them bereft of anything resembling a quality win. On Feb. 28, they got that win and then some at Gonzaga. At the WCC tournament, they avoided an upset to Santa Clara and then cruised past Portland, setting up Tuesday's title clash with Gonzaga. BYU lost that game, 91-75, when the Zags pulled away down the stretch. That should just about catch us up. What happens next? An NCAA tournament bid ... probably. BYU's resume remains pretty bubbly, but losing to the Zags on a neutral court doesn't hurt, and the win in Spokane erased the "but who have they beaten?" cudgel that would no doubt be used against them in the committee's deliberations. This is a good team with good players playing good basketball. There are no guarantees, but we think the committee will agree.

I know very little about SF Austin, but from what I've learned, the Runnin' Utes had better not go into that game thinking it's an easy win.

SF Austin seems to have a well oiled offence and are no push overs.

SF Austin won the Southland conference title this year...if that's worth anything. Many are saying the Utes are bigger and faster than SF and should win...all except for CBS commentator Seth Davis, who dismissed the Utes outright.

SF finished up the regular season with a record of 29-4, after playing a schedule full of no-name, nobody state schools in a weak lesser conference.
