The bears cannot be that dangerous as they have banned bear spray in Yosemite. I have backpacked +150 miles in the Sierras this year and never once seen a bear, and only 1 bear track. More people = more bear encounters because there really doesn't seem to be many bears, or any wildlife for that matter, in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California.

We have property up in the Uintahs. Over the past few years the bears have become more plentiful. Our game cameras, we place to observe the deer, have captured 8 different bears this summer. You have to assume that there are more that you don't get on film. Unfortunately this has altered how we interact with our land. Packing a fire arm is pretty much a family wide mandate anymore. I had one 6' off my toes this fall while archery hunting - they do spook off pretty easily... so far! But if I could have got a selfie from my deer blind... I sure would have!
