Lower Calf Creek Falls in Escalante

My wife ran the Bryce Canyon half marathon this weekend so we were somewhat close to Escalante, and this hike was actually her idea. It's been on my list for a while too so it was a win win.

Very sandy trail for most of the way and it was a pretty hot hike on the way in. I think it's @2.8 miles in or something like that but it felt like a lot longer probably because of the heat and the constant sand. But the falls are very worth it. The hike out was easier and we had some cloud cover providing lower temps.

The kids loved the waterfall and swimming, playing in the sand. The hike was on the more difficult side for them though, they weren't used to the distance in the heat. We took plenty of breaks in the little shade we would find and kept everybody hydrated.

Hiking this trail in sandals or flip flops is NOT recommended. The sand temp was recently measured last week at 159 degrees, yeouch.

Nice pics. Just wondered - all your pics ratio have one side double the length of the other, so twice as high as wide or twice as wide as high. My camera only does a 3x2 ratio, so your pics are equivalent to 4x2. I have trouble getting a tall thing like the falls in one frame.
So does your camera just take the waterfall pics exactly how you've shown them here?
Or have you stepped far enough back to get the whole falls in and then your pic was actually wider than it appeared here, but you've just cropped the sides to make it appear tall and narrow? Thanks, Ross

All of these shots were from my Samsung S5 and it's set at 16:9 for the ratio, vs 4:3

I didn't stitch any together, although I've cropped a few people out of the edges.

This phone might have a slightly wider angle than some phone cameras, I noticed this on my latest trip to havasupai.

Having never been to Calf Creek, I understand that the cool part about it is the waterfall...but is there a pleasant place to camp at the trailhead? Maybe not now, but earlier in late spring when it's a bit cooler? My wife who is disabled wouldn't be able to do the hike, but I'd sure like to go there sometime if there was a shady, nice place to camp and hike from.

Wasatch Rebel, yea you can camp right at the trailhead at the campground there. But it's quite limited and I'm not sure on accommodations. And, camping spots are taken very, very quickly. It's been a while since I camped there so things might have changed slightly from then.

Yeah there are some spots at the trailhead but it doesn't look huge. Might be about 20 spots though. The paved, picnic table car camping type of spots.

If you're in the area, check out Hell's Backbone highway, and then head on over to Bryce Canyon. You might drive that way to get there anyways.

In former times you've used a iPhone, if I remember right. The picture quality was miles better than these of Android devices.

No I've always had an android phone. I'm currently using Samsung S5. accadacca on the other hand uses an iPhone

Oops, sorry beech, I thought l've seen iPhone pics of Bryce Cyn.
I'll use both in the future, iOS and Android. The cam of my HTC isn't the burner.

That has to be one of the best short/easy hikes ever...despite the hoards of people.

Brings back fond memories of time spent in Escalante visiting my grandparents when I was a wee lad many years ago.
