22 May 2014, Natalie and I ventured down Deadeye Dick. We equipped ourselves with a 165ft rope, 200ft pull cord, 100ft of webbing, plus hardware. We got an early start from the Chamberlain Ranch trail head, leaving at 7:30am. It took one hour to get to the turnoff canyon to start our hike out of the Virgin River. It took an additional hour to hike to the proper drainage that is Deadeye Dick. In all, this canyon took us about 5.5 hours, trail head to end of canyon. We coupled this canyon with Mighty Mouse which added an additional hour. From the bottom of Mighty Mouse it was about 1.5 hours back to the vehicle. So in total including lunch stops and breaks, this adventure took a little over 8 hours.
Along the steep hike to the summit I ran into a small rattle snake-friend that scared the $&!+ out of me since I almost stepped on it. It didn’t rattle at all and was clearly way more scared of me than I of it. It slithered off to a nearby log for cover. Be careful out there!
In the drainage proper it took an additional 10-15 minutes of wash walking to get to the first rappel. The first rap had the remains of a dead animal at the bottom and lucky for us there was another great option just a few feet away. Once the raps start they come one after another with a short forest section break in between. The final rap is spectacular. This place was awesome and I can see how people would like to compare it with Birch Hollow, beautiful fluted drops, little puddles of water and forest like. I’ll let the pics do the rest of the talking.
Big, thanks to Luke at www.bluugnome.com (http://www.bluugnome.com) for the excellent beta.
