View Full Version : Trip Report Chaco Culture National Historical Park

Been wanting to visit this park for over 20 years, since first hearing about it. Finally made a visit with my wife on May 20-22, 2014. Camped at the Gallo Campground in the park. Park accessed only through rough dirt roads, passable to most vehicles except in wet, rainy conditions like we encountered. Nearest town of any size is Farmington-Bloomfield, New Mexico. Many ruins, pecked water basins and stairways ascending the cliff sides. Must have been quite the major cultural center in its heyday.

Nice post. Could you imagine what the canyon must of looked like in it's prime? We went there a few years ago. I was surprised at how free you are to explore the ruins. I was expecting more fences and rules. Your post makes me want to go back.

Chaco is a wonderful place indeed, once you get past the miles of brutal washboards on the road in. Here some video I shot while there in May 2013.
