Hello everyone my name is Ryan. Pretty limited experience over in Zion...Pine Creek, Keyhole, Echo. This summer I am kicking things off with Behunin and Heaps with some coworkers of mine. My experience is mainly in search and rescue which got me into canyoneering last summer. Looking forward to hearing your experiences and finding some partners for weekend Zion trips this summer.

Sweet. Has anyone in your group done Heaps? It's a BIG step up from Behunin. I'm sure your capable, what with your SAR background, but more experience or someone who has done it before is pretty important for Heaps. Welcome and be safe out there

Thanks for the heads up. No one in my group has done Heaps before. We have been doing a lot of research and gear prep. We just finished a deployment so the guys (4) are in great shape. We will have all the coords in multiple GPS, sat phone on standby, and a parred down sar ruck. Plan on getting an early start from Lava Point around 5 am. Were all paramedics with anywhere from 4-10 years rope rescue (not canyoneering experience).

Hello Ryan and welcome to keyboard preach-a-neering. Ditto what Bootboy said about Heaps being several giant steps up from Behunin. No comparison at all. 2 years ago a party was rescued out of Heaps after spending 3 days in the canyon. Their canyon resume was nearly identical to yours. Apart from seriously underestimating the difficulty of Heaps, they were otherwise well-prepared and in great shape (one was a frequent marathoner).
So, is it obvious I'm trying to throw a pause your way? If you're determined to do it no matter what, please try to find an experienced Heapster to join your crew and/or to consult for a clearer picture of what you guys are getting into. A SAR background may or may not be a good foundation for an extreme fast-track into difficult canyoneering.
Lastly, finding the canyon (re: GPS mention) hasn't proven to be a problem for most of the parties* rescued out of Heaps. It's the long, cold swims, potholes, weird anchors, awkward rap stations and other factors that overcome the unprepared. And that 500' rappel sequence, to exit the slot. Please be prepared to get yourselves through safely, and to not be injured, killed and/or rescued (re: Sat phone mention).
<preach off> and good luck with your trip!
