Are there any decent places to camp around Northwash area? Two of us are travelling from Wisconsin for a extended canyoneering trip in the Northwash regions and were looking for good recommendations. I found one in Hanksville (Red rock steakhouse and campground) but from online reviews it looks pretty beatdown.

Sandtrax is the place to camp in that area. Just past mile marker 28 on highway 95 on the south/east side.

In addition to Sandthrax (which tends to be crowded on weekends, especially in the spring), there are plenty of other campsites in North Wash as well. Most of them are near the mouths of canyons.

Closed officially, but open unofficially. There is a crew there rebuilding the footbridge (next week). Be polite. If you have a big group, a 30-rack of Bud Light is a good way to make friends. They work Mon-Thurs. Bring your own paper.

They might have lumber from the old bridge available for firewood. Burning treated wood is not recommended, so don't. Landscape Timbers?

Goblin Valley State Park is decently close and has bathrooms and showers if that's the kind of camping you like. Get site #19 for the illusion of not being right next to people. There's also a campground at Hite Marina which has bathrooms is almost always splendidly deserted. There is zero shade there but the views are fabulous and you're super close to some spectacular canyons.

If you travel up or down canyon a few miles from Sandthrax, you can pretty easily find places to camp for small groups, albeit *primitive*. Avoid building any new fire rings and don't poop where you sleep. If it's not a well established site, just be careful to practice your LNT skillz . But like I said, there are really quite a few places where you could set up a tent (or two) off the road a ways and have peace and quiet, which can be rare commodities at Sandthrax.
