It would probably be a lot more productive if the Utes went out and found themselves a QB.

When Utah were a mid-major they had good QB's (Alex Smith, Brett Ratliff, Brian Johnson), but now they are in the PAC 12 they can't seem to beg, barrow or steal a good QB.

And I moved all this to a new 2014 thread because the Utes are finished with the 2013 season and are now home sitting on the couch watching bowl games on TV.

As a Utah fan I guess I should be looking at the bright side of this new OC hire.....

... at least the Utes didn't hire Robert Anae....

I have always wondered what everyone was seeing in Brian Johnson(well documented on this site). I railed on his hire as an OC, didn't understand keeping him as a Co-OC and really could not care less about his leaving, other than it appeared that he was a solid recruiter. I cannot think of anything he did with Utah that made me think, "Wow...he sure can develop talent."

As far as Utah getting good QB's....they are getting kids in the system, they are not being developed....who was charged with that task?

I truly look at this as a PERFECT opportunity for Utah to upgrade at that position coach.

That is a very difficult schedule. The only cupcake is Idaho State. If I remember correctly Fresno State ended 2013 ranked #20, Michigan is a storied program, and every PAC 12 team is tough.

I think a 6-6 record with a no name bowl would be lucky, because right now I'm seeing a 5-7 year at best.

If the Utes can win their first 4, they'll get to 6... If not, I think they are winning 4-5 games.

Though they could get a win in any game they play(see: Stanford 2013), I think UCLA, USC, ASU, Oregon or Stanford are all losses. So 7 games to get 6 wins and I'm not sure they can do that without winning their first 4, then getting 2 wins in their last 8 games.

Excited to see Gionni Paul on the field.

Can't get any worse than last year, well....I guess it can, both by fewer wins and no joy of beating BYU.

Deuce

Then again, if they win their first 4....maybe they will get some confidence and actually sneak another win and get 7....

The question is.....are they gonna be any good this year? Cuz last year they were supposed to have a kick ass team. Unfortunately, the only ass kicking was the one their opponents were laying on them both at Rice-Eccles as well as abroad. Hell, last year's claim to fame was the Stanford game, but aside from that it was a shambles to say the least. Even with a vaunted OC and a returning line-up they sucked pretty bad. Is redshirt Wilson back to 100%?

I predict they'll slaughter Idaho State and Fresno State to start the season, and then the losses will begin on the road at Michigan, then UCLA, and then USC and Washington State will come to town....yada yada yada

Iceaxe

Utes will be lucky if they can make 6-6 with their schedule this year. I predict a 5-7 year. Their 2015 schedule will be more favorable with Michigan at home and the extra PAC12 game at home.

It sure would be sweet to have a QB durable enough to last a full season.

I believe Brian Johnson and the Sugar Bowl team was the last time Utah played a full season with one QB.

Serious question and I am not asking to poke at anyone or make any comparisons to BYU or other schools. Utah became a contender every year in the Mountain West and did some awesome things against the big boys in the BCS bowls. In those days it was great to be a Ute. Now, Utah is one of the the big boys but is struggling in conference play and has a high probability of another losing season. So here is the question(s). Excluding the money to the program as your point of argument, has the move to the PAC 12 made you happier as a fan? Why or why not?

Iceaxe
08-07-2014, 10:53 AM
The money can't be taken out of the equation as the numbers are just to large. There is no way you can ignore $20 million a year.

As for the team... everyone knew depth would be an issue the first 4 years, and the revolving door at OC has not been good. I don't think it's the move to the PAC 12 that has been Utah's biggest problem. The fact that Utah has not had a QB play a full season since Johnson and the Sugar Bowl team, now that is a big problem.

And I have to say I enjoy seeing USC, Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, ect coming in to play. It used to be we got one big name a year if we were lucky. Now more then half the season consists of big names.

So long as Chris Hill is AD the ship will be righted, it just takes some time. Utah finally got their basketball program fixed. So long as they are willing to spend the money the football program will get fixed.

accadacca

Patience is a virtue! I would rather play with the big boys, then beat up on the underdogs. It will take time to get up to speed....story of life on anything. I LOVE being part of the Pac and watching these awesome schools come into SLC. I really enjoy visiting their stadiums too. Utah came really close to beating a few of them.
Utah will get there in time and be back to bowl games. Mark my words on that. :bert: :utes3:

Wouldn't change a thing.... Soooo awesome to watch the Utes play this schedule. Every year having multiple major programs come into RES, let alone when they travel, watching those games on television. There is no denying that losing isn't fun, but I wouldn't go back if given the choice, seems unthinkable to even consider it.

Granted, I've consumed the Kool-Aid... I was the biggest "Go undefeated in any conference and you're in the conversation for the Championship Game." I REALLY believed that and that the difference between the conferences/schedules was something the BCS Conferences hid behind. Going through it for years now, it became VERY apparent that it is just different football.

Kind of like being an average starter on the Varsity, as opposed to an All Star on the JV.

I also don't think Utah will ever be a major player in the PAC12, year in and year out contending for Division Championships. I said it even when they received the invite, the Utes will be an Arizona, ASU, Washington like member. Every 10ish years they'd have a team that may contend for a Championship, other than that, they'd be middle of the pack. Note, I didn't say win a Championship, but contend, be right there. I'm fine with that. This football is AWESOME!

Ouch! the Bleacher Report isn't giving the Utes much of a chance....

Bold Prediction: The Utes will win just four games.

That's probably not the sort of bold prediction that Utah fans were hoping to see here, but unless quarterback Travis Wilson can take about five steps forward from his play toward the end of last season, the Utes will struggle.

Yes, Wilson was banged up, but while he showed flashes in several early games, it wasn't as if he was playing at an All-Conference level. The defense is led by Nate Orchard up front, but again, playing in the Pac-12 tends to make even tough defenses look poor and occasionally awful.

Let's assume Kyle Whittingham's team will be up to the challenge against Idaho State to open the season. After that, there are no guaranteed wins. Fresno State will be tough, as will Washington State and even Colorado. The coaching staff may get this team to five or six wins, but I'm not sure the talent level is there.

Are you crazy? Someone must have watched the game through crimson colored glassess. The defense looked like shit. If that had of been a real D1 school the Utes would have had 400 yards rushing and 600 total offense hung on them. The Utes have some serious fixing to do

And BYU looked really good against UConn. If Hill is just mediocre in the passing game that team can go far, particularly if you look at the extended cupcake portion of their schedule.

YMMV

I wasn't impressed with the defense either. They rushed for 200 yards using two different guys who both averaged over 5 yards per carry. Our secondary got burned on several occasions too. They looked like rookies, not turning their head around to locate the ball.

The offense looked pretty good, but sputtered out of the gates. It should have been at least 21-0 in the first quarter.

I don't know what kind of math the Tribune is using. In betting 7.5 is a pretty big spread.

Comparatively, Utah did to Fresno, almost exactly what USC did to Fresno, after 3 quarters.... It is not a surprise that Utah's 2's-3's are worse that USC's. Comparative scoring isn't a great indicator, but it's what we have at this point.

Am I saying Utah is #14 USC(soon to be higher) or close to USC, will beat USC or Stanford, like USC just did.....NO. Hell, I'm still not sure the Utes will win 6 games. They have done what they needed to do weeks 1 & 2.

Michigan and Washington State are both struggling.... The Utes could seemingly start 4-0....probably SHOULD start 4-0...

I'm not buying that graph for obvious reasons but look at Texas. I do not believe that A&M is the most popular in that state, unless "popular" means bandwagon. I lived there for a year and work with three Texans. Texas is the biggest program in the country with the most money if I remember correctly. Everyone I work with (2 are huge football fans) said there are way more Texas fans.

Iceaxe

I agree.... Texas is traditionally one of the top 5 programs in the country. Every high school player in the state dreams of playing for the Longhorns.
As for the state of Utah.... it was probably close between the cougs and the Utes, until the Utes joined the PAC12. BYU needs to stop playing mostly glorified high school teams and find a place in the BIG12 if they ever want to be relevant.

I think the two will eventually get together.... it's all about the money. The Big 12 needs 12 teams so they can have a conference championship game. Just the TV rights to those conference championship games is something like $25 million. BYU brings a lot to the table with a nice stadium, nice program and large following.

The BIG12 is afraid to ask this girl to dance because of all the baggage she carries.

I really hope that somehow BYU can get into the BIG12, would be awesome to have that type of quality of opponents coming into the area on a regular basis. I think it's a natural fit and BYU can compete with facilities, academics, NR sports ect. But I have to think that there is obviously something holding this back & that doesn't appear to be changing in the near future.

Of course BYU would jump at the chance to join a Power 5 Conference, that's a given.

"Naysayers"? I have yet to hear many, if any, people saying that Utah isn't a good bet to go 4-0...... Saying it is feasible is treading lightly. After seeing Michigan and WSU, I assumed the UTES would be a touchdown favorite on both....

Well, unless you count Vegas, who has Utah as a 6 point dog as the lines opened up today....

That number surprised me and since Vegas is usually pretty good with this stuff, has me wondering what they are seeing that I am not. Then again, they had Texas as a 5 point favorite(or something like that) when the line opened with BYU and that number went to BYU -1.5 by kickoff.... Some of that was due to Texas injury and suspensions....

A gut wrenching loss. A game that may come back to haunt them. Guess we will see if WSU can build on their last 2 weeks, where they have looked better than their first few.

Tough road trip for the Utes.

The Utes starting 3-1 is not exactly a surprise, just maybe how they ended up getting to 3-1, after being 3-0 and up 24-7 at the half in game 4......

Still expect this team to get to 6 wins.

A lot like I wasn't the sky is falling, last week with the loss. I'm realistic about the win yesterday. It was a nice win, on the road, against a ranked opponent.....that they almost found a way to give away. They needed a defensive score to outscore the opponents offense, that continues to concern me. LOVE that they continue to NOT turn the ball over.

I don't trust Thompson, when a DCoordinator has the opportunity to game plan against his innability to throw the ball. But hey, he won a big game....that's fun. Just want 6....and the Utes are 66% of the way there....

Booker is a beast....as are Carter, Paul & Orchard....

Utah's kicking game was a big reason for the win. Thompson can't throw the deep ball. The TD to Dres was just a prayer. Thompson tossed the ball up for grabs and Dres pulled his ass out of the fire by out fighting two defenders. Receivers were dropping balls they should have caught, that is the second game in a row for that. Booker is a stud. On D the front 7 is awesome so long as Utah doesn't start that rush 3 bullshit. Blechen hits like a dump truck, good to have him back at full speed.

Great win. I'm a little concerned at Utah's WRs dropping easy catches. In fact, that's one of the biggest reasons for their loss to WSU...Dres dropped two key passes...one of which would have most likely been a TD.

The Beavers scored 51 points en route to a victory over the Utes last year, and that was in SLC. Not sure if they'll be able to pull it off this Thursday. OSU always plays the Utes very tough.

Travis Wilson had 3 rushing TDs in that game. It seems that for whatever reason Dave Christensen wants to move away from that though, keeping Wilson exclusively in the pocket. I think that's a mistake...Wilson is a more potent threat when he mixes his ability to pass together with his ability to run.

Iceaxe

Utah's offense has baffled me for the past five years.... this year my take is Wilson is nearly the runner Thompson is and he is ten times the passer.... so starting Wilson should be a no brainer, provided you let him run... instead I expect Utah will start Thompson, OSU will load the box and stop the run, Thompson will not have the arm to beat anyone, Utah's offense will stall and the Utes will wonder why.... big sigh...

USC's two losses came from Arizona State and Boston College. My opinion the Trojans are a tad overrated. Besides, the Utes seem to always play USC very tough.

Five storylines: USC vs. Utah

Elimination game: Both teams already have a loss in the conference so another loss in this game would mean a tough road ahead for a team looking to stay alive for a berth in the Pac-12 title game. USC coach Steve Sarkisian has been telling his players that every week is a championship week from here on out.

Continue offensive momentum: The Trojans offense seemed to find a groove last week against Colorado by adding elements of a downfield passing game that had been missing earlier in the year. Not only did Cody Kessler (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/513329/cody-kessler) set a school record with seven touchdown passes in the game but several of those throws were for long gains that should help open things up even more for the run game. The ability to throw downfield against the Utes' secondary could be a key difference in the outcome.

Utah special teams: A quick check of the Utes' special teams shows that they are pretty solid across the board. Tom Hackett (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/531022/tom-hackett) averages over 47 yards per punt and leads the conference. Place-kicker “Automatic” Andy Phillips (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/531041/andy-phillips) has hit 13 of 15 field goals and is perfect on extra points; he leads the conference in scoring, too. And return man Kaelin Clay (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/504726/kaelin-clay) has returned three punts and one kickoff for scores. Utah coach Kyle Wittingham takes an active role in overseeing special teams and that kind of emphasis shows on the field.

USC O-line vs Utah D-line: The marquee matchup on paper is the Utah defensive front, which leads the nation in sacks and tackles for loss, against a Trojans line that is young but has made strides in recent games. Will USC be able to protect Kessler long enough to allow the downfield passing game to develop? Or will Nate Orchard (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/550231/nate-orchard) & Co. be able to apply the kind of pressure that allowed them to get 10 sacks in one game against UCLA?

Battle of the running backs: Buck Allen leads the conference with 909 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, while also topping the position list for all-purpose yardage.Devontae Booker (http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/_/id/3122866/devontae-booker) of Utah has been a force lately; over the last three games he’s averaged 30 carries per contest and 187.7 yards, including a 229-yard, three touchdown effort in a double-OT win over Oregon State. Both backs are tough, physical runners who help set the identity for their teams, so fans of tailback play should get ready to sit back and enjoy watching these two in action.

Actually the betting line really has nothing to do with home or away... it is based totally on dollars bet. The reason the line moves is the sports books want an even number of dollars bet on both sides. The book will move the line as required to make sure that happens. The book makes their money by taking a percentage of the winnings.

The line has to initially be set. Generally the home team is going to get a few points related to their being home, not having to travel. That figures into the assessment into where the line is going to initiate. After the initial line is set, it will move related to where the money is going. So in a nutshell, the line does have something to do with being home/traveling.

Rice :lol8:
Purdue :lol8:
Michigan :lol8:
Syracuse :lol8:
North Carolina :lol8:

They beat Stanford in a very close game, and lost by 4 points in a very close game to #2 Florida State.

...but ND deserves a #6 ranking? Pleeeeaaaase!

Gotta be some $$$ goin' under the table there somewhere. Please prove me wrong.

Everyone knows the polls are really a beauty pageant. Utah's problem is they were supposed to be the ugly step sister this year and not Cinderella. And it doesn't help that Utah let the ugly prince Wazoo bend her over and bang the hell out of her.

LOL. Where you may have been correct most nights, I can guarantee that at that instant you are false on three key pieces of evidence:

1. double moo wasn't gawking in that direction with me (he normally has a pretty good eye for the leaders of cheer just as much as I).

2. A good friend and co-worker was at that game (seated in section 23 (the endzone)), and I was staring over there all night trying to locate him. (Never did).

and

3. If I was scoutin' the ladeez, my tongue would've been out. :lol8:

Utah senior wide receiver Dres Anderson out rest of season

SALT LAKE CITY – University officials announced Utah senior wide receiver Dres Anderson will be out for the rest of the season because of a knee injury.

Anderson is Utah’s leading receiver with 355 yards and four touchdowns and is second on the team in receptions with 22.
He will finish his Utah career with 2,077 yards which puts him at fifth in school history.

The Utes (No. 18) will take on the No. 15 Arizona State Sun Devils Saturday in Arizona at 9 p.m. MT.

accadacca
10-29-2014, 10:14 AM
Anderson likely sustained the injury during Utah's 24-21 win over the University of Southern California Saturday, but details about when the injury took place were not immediately made known by the university.

Although the injury is a major blow to the university moving forward, the team has more depth in that position than it has since joining the Pac-12. Freshman Kenric Young is listed as the backup receiver behind Anderson. But receivers Delshawn McClellon and Tim Patrick will likely get some playing time as well.

Unfortunate news about Dres. I hope he has a full recovery and is ready to do some work at the combine(depending on what the problem with the knee is, maybe not reasonable).

That said, injuries happen, time for the next guy to step up and make plays.

"I think Utah has been just hanging around in the rankings...just hanging around in tight games, winning a lot of close ones....I think their luck runs out tonight against the Sun Devils."

Yeah. Utah is just hanging around in the rankings. The implication there is that our presence in the rankings is undeserved. Stupid B!+(&

That said, Utah hasn't beat ASU in like what.....1000 years? ASU has Utah's number, and Utah knows it. This is a David vs. Goliath matchup, and unfortunately Utah is fresh out of stones.

What a crazy game! At least they didn't get blown out this year. The defense played awesome, holding ASU (averaging 36 per game) to 16 points in regulation.

It's too bad about the missed field goal. I thought the Utes battled hard, but offensively (especially in the passing game) they really struggle. You can't win games on field goals each visit to the red zone...

Utah's play calling sucks. There are other ways to attach a blitz other than Booker between the tackles. Perhaps a quick slant once in a while to take some pressure off Booker. That team sure misses Dres, even on the plays he was not the target, as he was always a thread to go deep and forced the safeties to respect his speed.

I like reading the newspaper of Utah's opponents to see what they are saying.... below is what they are saying in oregon. I notice the writer agrees with me on the RES home field advantage.

Oregon Ducks vs. Utah Utes Complete Game Preview
By Jason Gold , Oregon Lead Writer

After finally taking care of their “Stanford Problem,” the No. 5-ranked Oregon Ducks (8-1, 5-1) have cleared a lane to the inaugural College Football Playoff.

However, the No. 20-ranked Utah Utes (6-2, 3-2) will attempt to play spoiler and are the Ducks’ last true regular-season roadblock.

While the Ducks still have regular-season games against Colorado and Oregon State, the Utes will really challenge the Ducks and have one of the best home-field advantages in the entire Pac-12, if not the country.

Coming off of a huge win over Stanford, Oregon may be looking past a team that definitely has a chance to pull off the upset.

Utah features a stout defense, amazing special teams and one of the best running backs in the country in junior Devontae Booker.

Throw in the elevation of Utah’s home field—Rice-Eccles Stadium sits 4,657 feet above sea level—and you understand why the Ducks should be on high alert.

This isn’t the Utah of a couple years ago that couldn’t compete in the Pac-12. These Utes came to play this season and will be looking to right the ship after an overtime loss at Arizona State last weekend.

Meanwhile, the Ducks know they only have three more regular-season opportunities to make their case for a playoff spot.

A solid win over Utah in Salt Lake City would be of value to their resume. They also know a loss on Nov. 8 would spoil their postseason aspirations.

Here's what you need to know:

Date: Saturday, Nov. 8

Time: 7 p.m. PT/10 p.m. ET

Place: Rice-Eccles Stadium (Salt Lake City, Utah)

TV: ESPN

Spread: Oregon -9.5, according to Odds Shark

Nope, it will now just be Manning or Cox that everyone is calling for....:roflol: I'm not kidding either.... How long before Whit and Christensen say that the QB job is an open competition?

If the Utes can just win 2 of their next 3, puts them at 8-4....which would be an UNBELIEVEABLE SEASON. Hell, 7 wins would be amazing... Start of the season, people were hoping for 6. Vegas had the Utes at 4.5.

Though how the Utes at 6-3 is a bit disappointing, almost snake bit....

There is a lot of truth in what you say... Lavell Edwards always said the most popular guy in Provo is BYU's back-up QB....

I would be happy with a 7-5 season, 8-4 would be outstanding, particularly with the schedule Utah played which at the beginning of the season was ranked the toughest in college football for 2014.

They way I look at it now is the Utes are playing to see what bowl they go to. Everything is still open to them from the Rose Bowl to the Cactus Bowl... I'm thinking the Holiday Bowl would be a great spot and would require an 8-4 season. 7-5 probably gets you the Las Vegas Bowl and 6-6 gets you the disappointing Cactus bowl.

Well, if you were to assign the teams to bowl games as of today, Utah would be playing either Baylor or TCU (they're tied for number one with an 8-1 record).

Yikes...I think TCU would smoke Utah - they always played Utah very tough when Utah and TCU were in the Mountain West.

I think Baylor is over-rated as their schedule is full of high school teams -- almost from top to bottom. Although they did beat TCU by 3 points in a defense-less high scoring shootout. So....who knows. :ne_nau:

I'm sure hearing a lot of hubbub about Sitake not being happy and possibly leaving. That would be a major mistake IMHO if that is allowed to happen. Utah's defense is really really good. Yes, I am referring to a Gordon Monson article and no I am not a fan of him but this seems like a legitimate concern.

Deuce
11-12-2014, 11:42 AM
I don't think KS will take a lateral move and would take a good HC job anyway, I think Monson is stirring the pot...which he is paid to do.

KS will get a nice raise and hopefully(for my selfish good) doesn't get a good HC job that he has to take.

He's leaving sooner or later, it's going to happen. He's a very good coordinator and very good coordinators become head coaches. Whit will turn the defense over to someone he trusts & they will get the job done, just as he did when GA left.

Utah started as a 7.5 dog at Stanford. I would not be surprised to see them go down to the Farm and get a win.

Iceaxe
11-12-2014, 11:54 AM
Monson has to be the biggest douche in Utah sports.... but with that being said I expect Sitake to be offered a better job in the near future, as he deserves it. If offensive coaches were not this weeks flavor of the month Sitake would already have a head coaching job. Look to see which MWC coach might not be around next year and those are the places I suspect Sitake might end up. Sitake's biggest draw back at the moment is it's not easy to sell defense to boosters and alumni this week.
