This has been my philosophy with my little grade school city league flag football team. We never punt. Can't do onside kicks by rule but punting is useless.

I have coached a lot of football teams, up to and including high school freshmen. My teams NEVER punt. My teams over the years have won four league championships and 3 of those teams went undefeated.

In youth football the kids can't kick it far enough to make much of a difference. And that extra down is worth more in youth than the NFL or NCAA where the players are so fast. Of course often line up like we were going to punt, but the ball goes to the up back and we run a standard sweep, dive or off-tackle play behind a pulling guard. When you make the down it's really a demoralizer to the other teams in youth ball.

And FWIW... I'm one of the few coach's I've seen in youth ball that pulls the off guard, that extra blocker out front of the play is a huge advantage. A lot of coach's say pulling a guard is to complicated but I've found it's easy to coach and implement.

If anyone ever wants to see some game film of one of my teams I'll post it to YouTube.
