Three Canyon and Moonshine Wash

So next spring we're off to the Robbers Roost again and we plan on doing North Fork again along with White Roost, Larrys and maybe Pasture. We want a day for an easy semi technical hike. Is Three canyon, preferably the northwest fork and north fork, any good? And is moonshine wash a nice hike? Thanks.

Three Canyon can either be technical or not, depending on what you want to do. It is fun to hike down to the Green River, although at Three Canyon it is typically so full of silt that your hand disappears as soon as it is 1 inch under the water. There are almost always deer in Three Canyon too which are fun to see.

Moonshine Wash is a very tame hike. The stretch near the sheep bridge is very beautiful. We hiked back up moonshine wash instead of following the loop out. The hike back up scrambling over the obstacles was fun.

The Three canyon that's across the road (east) from the Moonshine Wash drainage can be easily accessed from it's south end. There's one bolted rappel of around 100 feet, and from there, it's a sceninc walk to the river. You can set up a takeout beforehand by parking a second vehicle near the north end of the canyon where it makes its sharp easterly bend. (A short road near the top of a hill goes uphill and then levels off and places you within a 10 minute walk over to the side canyon and overlook of Three. That
side canyon drops in there and you can descend part way down and set a fixed rope off an old bolt. 100 feet would more than do.
Moonshine Wash has short, scenic narros that last about 1/2 hour. Best to just turn around & have fun going back up as "Cannon" suggested.

Last August we went down the West Fork of Three Canyon, and it was full of water and really fun! It is short, and adds a nice addition to the Main Fork of Three Canyon.

But of course! Isn't that how everyone canyoneers? Funny story - we kayaked down the Green River from Ruby Ranch to get to this spot. I told some of the boy scouts in the group that the climb out of Three Canyon had a 5.5 crux, and that if they really wanted to they could "bring" rock climbing shoes. So next thing I see as we are slogging up canyon, there are a few boys WEARING their rock shoes!! REALLY? So a few blisters later, some of the boys are descending the West Fork barefoot. The good news was that the rest of the trip was floating down the Green River and not hiking!

+1 on Moonshine being fun, easy, and super scenic. I would second scrambling back up the canyon vs the slog in the desert. ESPECIALLY if it is hot!69376
