ZION, Utah — Search and rescue crews are working Monday to find two hikers who they said are missing in southern Utah.

According to rescue crews, two women from the Salt Lake City area went on a three-day hiking trip near Zion National Park. The women left on Thursday and were supposed to return Sunday, but never did.

According to Kane County Emergency Services, the women, ages 40 and 51, began their hike south of Mt. Carmel Junction and west of Highway 89 in the East Fork of the Virgin River. Their goal was to go to a popular hiking spot called Fat Man’s Misery, and then hike back to their vehicle parked at Checkerboard Mesa in Zion National Park.

Search and rescue teams are using helicopters and ground crews to comb the area. They said they are concerned about possible afternoon rainstorms hindering their search.

This is a developing story. FOX 13 will update with the latest details as soon as they become available.
