View Full Version : Conditions Is Heap or Imlay full of water after the recent rain?

We did full Imlay a couple weeks ago and while fun (lots of pothole escapes), thinking it would be a blast full of water. Can't find a trip report since the rain this past week to see if either Imlay or Heap are full of water. Anyone heard anything?

Even in low water conditions, there is a section in Imlay that is quite chilly. There are a few people capable of doing the canyon au natural, but not many.
Recent rains will likely have changed the equation. We have had a lot of short rain events, so it is hard to say exactly what the effects are, except that it is likely that at least some rain has hit Imlay and some rain has hit Heaps.

Sucks to carry pack weight.. but personally I'd bring a wetsuit even when its bone dry. There's no reason to take any risk of getting hypothermia.

I usually take a cold shower. That way I have a reason for my "shame"

I too, have absolutely no idea what the conditions are in those canyons as well. But I'll be there in a couple weeks so I'll be sure to check this thread to verify that everyone is still clueless.

So sorry, fanboys... I've been spending time with the adults.
Let me translate that into Bogley-speak -
"You'd be a frakking IDIOT to go in there without a wetsuit, no matter how dry its bin reported. It's been rainin' - things get wet when it rains."
Carry on.

Heaps and Imlay both have water, probably. If the water is cold, you will want a wetsuit.
I have some friends doing it tomorrow and ill post back either very late Saturday or Sunday of what they find.

Thank the heavens above. I was ready to call the Mapleton team to go do one of these canyons just to shut this thread down.
So my friends finished in great time and here is what they said:
"the water level is about 2-3 feet from the lip, and it wasn't as fun with the lower water level but it was warmer, and was a little nerve racking with the Thunder above us about 9 raps from the exit, but the hooking was extra nice because all the holes were good, the guided rap and other rope work was fun too. And it was cool to see some other changes in the canyon. The logjams look the same from last year, and the 1st part of the canyon were the logs are are not a problem with low-water."
Btw - they were 3/2 full wetsuits and were fine the whole way through - and the low-water levels didn't make em cold.

I'm assuming the previous post was with regards to Imlay, we went through Heaps yesterday and the description does not seem to match up. We found heaps to be fairly full and not too difficult*, but take that with a grain of salt because a) it was our first time through so we had nothing to compare it to and b) we had an experienced group. Maybe it would help to add that some of the bigger keepers had water levels about 4 ft from the lip. All keepers were partner assists except one which we pack tossed. We had a group of 5 with wetsuits from 4/3 full to 3/2 farmer john. All were plenty warm except the 3/2 farmer john who got chilled a couple times. 7 hrs from top to top of last rap.
*Heaps is always difficult (except when it's not). Don't be stupid.

Walking through The Narrows yesterday evening, we ran into a group fresh out of Imlay. They said it was fairly empty, tough to get out of the potholes, and they never put their wetsuits on.

Must of been my group. They said at most there was a pothole that was neck deep for 5 seconds but most were no more than thigh deep to calf feel the entire time.
Oh, And they went right sneak and they said that SUCKED BAD compared to left sneak just as a FYI.

Yes, probably. They were describing it to me and I was confused. A small language barrier. Couple of European guys with a pro climber? With a couple of younger guys?
One dude in the group was hilarious, about 20 yrs old, hiking down the narrows with flip flops on, no hiking stick. The water was muddy and high, but it didn't stop him! He was flying downstream in those flip-flops!
I think he has x-ray vision, or else all his toes would be broken. :haha: All very upbeat guys for being on the trail for some 15 hours.

WOW.... I think right (east) sneak is a lot easier than left.
What do others who have done both think?

Shane a forest fire burned a lot of the bush whacking in left sneak a few years ago. For that reason I choose left over right. YMMV

Went through Imlay Right Sneak today. Bushwacking was no big deal at all. It has flashed within the last day or 2... definately since Saturday. Everything was full and much of the canyon was flowing. Group of 7: 9:47 from car to shuttle.

It would be great if you could post a conditions report on Canditions.

One week ago, as Ross and I were finishing our Narrows top down hike, we came across a group of 4 and one solo guy rapping from Imlay. They said the potholes were "tippy top full" and not a single toss or hook out was needed.

Have done both this year, and a top-down. Tri-fecta?
The going UP on the Left Sneak is definitely easier. The burn-out helped a lot. But the going DOWN is WAY harder, with scrappy downclimbs and other things that take time and energy.
On the LEFT Sneak, there is a cliff-band section, usually passed by following trails left to a crappy ledge with a crappy handline. Nearly lost a dude there a couple years ago, so this time I insisted on rapping the cliff-band section. 120 feet does not get you to the bottom! But it does get you to a cool hole/ledge behind an arch, and we used the arch to rap the further 50 feet to the ground. Yes, all this took a lot of time, so our total time to the suit-up spot was 5 hours (quite casual pace), rather than the 4 hours usual for the Right Sneak.
From there, Log Soup slowed us down some. The Birth Canal was blocked by a log which we spent 20 minutes trying to move out. Couldn't. Climbed up over the top and rapped the other side.
Otherwise - all potholes full, water not so cold.

Thanks, going left it was the cliff band on the way down that I thought sucked.
