Terrible news. One of the worst firefighting incidents in our county's history. Thoughts and prayers go out to the families and community.
It's a tough job for sure. This sucks. One of the worst ways to go in life...
I did BLM wildland firefighting for 2 years in St. George back in 2006-2007. A lot of highs and a few lows. It's a huge adrenaline rush for sure when you are IA (initial attack).
The closest we got to deploying our fire-shelters was on the Utah Hill fire in 06 when we were trapped in a valley. The fire was about 100yards away and probably. 30ft+ tall coming at us in every direction except one gap in the downslope. We ran as fast as we could downhill tripping over rock and bush and we made it, but the fire was so intense it gave us 1st degree burns on our faces and hands (the only parts that weren't covered by clothing).
I can't imagine what these men suffered through, just awful. :(

What a tragedy. This fire is less than a mile from the house of the parents of two of my best friends. My friend was herself a firefighter for the Forest Service near the Grand Canyon and her husband for the BLM near Kingman some years ago. I have offered them my house in Flagstaff if needed. I hope the parents and their house are safe. Sympathies to the families of those who died.
