So people consider the "commando" hike, one of the more extreme hikes on the island. They "say" there's a lava tube to swim through. Though I actually think its an irrigation tunnel, that got eroded real quickly.

We did the commando hike... some climbing and stemming upstream. you then come out of an irrigation ditch at the end. Normally you could hike down the dirt road to get out.. however being a canyoneer, we prefer rappelling downstream to get back.

It takes you into the Bamboo Forest (a.k.a. 4 waterfalls), which is a very popular, public hike. Fun to do, as people who are at the bottom are usually quite amazed at WTF are we doing.

Water temperature was relatively warm. No wetsuit needed. Again, low water levels. Very short and sweet route.

Damn. So impressive. The colors are so unreal. One of these days we should meet in Kauai and do a few canyons together. :naughty:

I think the worst part of the Commando hike is the chafing :haha: :haha:

But seriously though... awesome trip report and pics. Thanks for posting. What's a lava tube?

While lava is flowing, the outside layer may end up cooling and hardening, while the inner layer would continue to flow quickly. However, when that inner layer drains out, quicker than it cools off, it leaves a cave like formation. That would be a short summary of it.

That's the longer version.
