The Marble Canyon Lodge and Restaurant burned to the ground early this morning.

The historic building has been a stop for travelers in the Lee's Ferry area since 1926. Highway 89A was closed for several hours in the area.

According to information from the Coconino County Sheriff's Office, the owner, who lives on site, awoke to a burglary alarm at about 1:30 a.m. and found smoke and flames billowing out of the rear of the building.

Construction workers, who were staying at the motel as they worked to improve Lees Ferry Road, scrambled to help. The workers used their two water tanker trucks.

Firefighters from Page arrived about an hour and a half later.

Emergency responders from the Fredonia Fire Department, Colorado City/Hildale Fire Department, Page Electric, National Park Service Rangers from Lee's Ferry, and Kane County Medical Transport were also on site.

The newer building that houses the post office and convenience store north of the lodge was not damaged. The motel to the south was also unharmed.

The sheriff's office and the Flagstaff Police Department are investigating how the fire might have started.

That's pretty sad as I know the area pretty well.
