National rates of gun homicide and other violent gun crimes are strikingly lower now than during their peak in the mid-1990s, paralleling a general decline in violent crime, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of government data. Beneath the long-term trend, though, are big differences by decade: Violence plunged through the 1990s, but has declined less dramatically since 2000.

the question is whether the recent instances of gun violence are considered to be crimes statistically? I guess not, because there seem to be a lot of them lately...

Not really, gun violence is way down, the problem is the media sensationalizing a couple high profile events. The media just fails to mention the huge decrease in overall gun violence.

I like this quote

"It’s unclear whether media coverage is driving the misconception that such violence is up."

Its not the Media, its... um... I can't even come up with another reason.

Not only the murder rate (though this year, it's possible that it may go up from last), but most crime rates are decreasing in the US.

By most criteria, worldwide, last decade was actually by far the most peaceful decade in world history when it comes to warfare, though you wouldn't know this listening to many of our politicians and the media.
