Zion Trifecta?

Anyone have any experience with tackling Heaps, Imlay and Kolob is the same outing? I saw a group did it in 2009, but can't find any other trip reports regarding it. Any suggestion on the sequence either? I was thinking Kolob up MIA to Imlay to the tram and back to Grotto to head up to Heaps. Want to limit the use of vehicles as much as possible.

How long do you think it will take you to do all three? About 24 hours? The only thing I don't like about doing Heaps last is doing the final rappel sequence at the end of a long strenuous day when you're tired and possibly not thinking clearly. I would choose to hike out the narrows last from Imlay. But doing Heaps and then Imlay after Kolob would mean for more hiking between the canyons.

But I say this knowing I am not in near good enough shape to do more than one of these canyons in a day. I wouldn't even do these in three consecutive days. If you're in good enough shape that you don't think mental fatigue would be an issue then I think Imlay then Heaps would be the quickest sequence.

Because, of course, their team was just ordinary guys... ha! :roflol:


They had a couple liabilities:

A. they were not really canyoneers - though good climbers and fast learners, they did not start with a background in canyoneering and had not so much experience when they did it;

B. they had trouble getting into Kolob, because that summer the canyon was closed most of the time. Thus they did not get to rehearse Kolob well, and this cost them making the trifecta in 24 hours.

C. They chose a strange order.

D. They did not use a GPS.

They had a couple advantages:

A. All three are extraordinary athletes.

B. All three are extraordinary athletes.

Practise run on full Imlay in 7:43? Yowser.

If Jared got pysched...I think he'd do the gig in under 20 hours. He's convinced he could run out Kolob to the TOS and still be sub one day.

So I am not so much interested in trying and doing them in under 24 hrs or as fast as I can. Just want to make the trek in a weekend. But I also wanted to get a feel for how often this is done? Has anybody else completed this task in a weekend?

After about 12 straight hours of canyoneering the fun quickly runs out of the adventure for me. YMMV....
