MMA has become my favorite spectator sport, and I'm surprised that there's not a thread dedicated to it. And so....I give you the Official MMA/UFC gossip column....

The Jon "Bones" Jones vs. Chael Sonnen fight is rapidly approaching, and I will be glued to the big screen that night -- should be an awesome fight. Sonnen in all honestly beat Anderson Silva into a bloody pulp in their first fight, and should have won were it not for that damn leg lock in the 5th round (errrrrr.....I hate Silva!). Sonnen might be the best wrestler in his class, and he's a nasty striker. He's not gonna stand and strike with Jones cuz Jones has a 10.5 inch reach advantage. I see Sonnen wrastling Jones to the ground immediately, which would be interesting to watch. Sonnen is a great wrestler, but wrestling Jones is like wrestling a giraffe. Jones is so tall and lanky, he can escape many jiu-jitsu and other wrestling moves. Not only that but if Jones gets on top, you can be sure his elbows will be slicing up your forehead.

Predictions?

1. I pick Jones over Sonnen in the 4th round due to striking (ground n' pound).

2. Michael Bisping over Alan Belcher in the 3rd due to strikes (KO).

3. Cheick Congo over Roy "Big Country" Nelson by judges decision.

4. Phil "Mr. Wonderful" Davis over Vinny Magalhaes due to Anaconda Choke in the 2nd. (Phil Davis is a beast)

Pissed that Benson Henderson beat Gilbert Melendez...someone needs to snuff out that long haired freakshow. It baffles me that dudes that fight Henderson don't capitalize on those moments when he breaks his guard to adjust his hairdo. Seems that would be a perfect time to land a front kick to his grill...

I don't think he fears him at all. I think he respects him. To date, he's the one that gave Silva his run for the money. If it weren't for that submission in he closing minutes of that fight, Chael would have won that fight. I think Anderson underestimated him amd I think he's hoping Jones is too. One of the pluses Chael has, is to keep coming at you non-stop every single round.

Pissed that Benson Henderson beat Gilbert Melendez...
I look at Henderson, like I view GSP. Both are fighting smart to keep their belts, not fighting fights for the fans to love. Can't blame them for that. It's the challenger's job to bring the fight to take those belts. I remember watching GSP and Henderson fight the kind of fights fans love, once they loose a fight, you may see it again. GSP used to throw a hell of a lot more kicks, now there is that chance it could be a losing strategy. Henderson also was a more exciting fighter back in the WEC

Whu.....? How so? Big Roy's got a huge following. Whu.....? How so? Big Roy's got a huge following.
Yes, he has a huge following. But, from the time Nelson was on the Ultimate Fighter, Dana doesn't like him. He doesn't like his work ethic. It also showed when he was a coach on the UF, Dana didn't have very nice things to say about him then. He doesn't mind the money making aspect Nelson draws, that's just a business. If the heavyweight division had a deep enough pool, Nelson would be cut as soon as he stopped producing. Like in other classes that have deep pools, three or four losses in a row, you're gone. Way too much new talent out there and no place to have them. This is one problem having the UFC buy up other fight promotions.

Alright...tomorrow's fight card: Jon Jones v. Alexander Gustaffson. Alex is an inch taller, but JJ still has a 2 inch reach advantage. Alex's only loss came from a first round submission at the hands of Phil Davis. Should be an interesting matchup, although the rest of the fight card looked kind of ho-hum. Predictions?

Geez, really? Did Cormier seriously think he had a shot against John Jones? Not only was it a loss for DC, it was an embarrassment. A physical and stylistical mismatch that resulted in another lopsided win for jbj.

I can't see anybody who's capable of beating Jones...except for maybe a rematch with Gustafson. Aside from that, Jones will reign supreme for a good long time. Nobody else is remotely capable of knocking him off.

Interesting that this is illegal, but not a banned substance. Test conducted on December 4th. Test results usually happen within 24 hours and a second retest of the same sample within one week. UFC leaders had to know, but they would have lost a ton of money if Jones bailed. Oh well, that entire fight card wasn't worth the money.

rockgremlin

Oh well, that entire fight card wasn't worth the money.

Well, yes and no. The best fight of the night by far was that ridiculous humiliating beatdown Cowboy put on Jury. That kid learned a valuable lesson about who NOT to trash talk that night. Joe Rogan said it best when he described Cowboy's performance in the last 10 seconds as "trying to kick a soccer ball to the moon." Later Cowboy admitted that he was intentionally trying to break Jury's legs with those monster leg kicks. I've never seen a guy wind up for leg kicks like that.

But yeah, the Jones/Cormier fight was a letdown.

The fact that Jones checked himself into rehab is suggesting that he's had a problem with that for a while. Otherwise, he'd just take his stripes and move on -- his title and his payment where unaffected by getting caught with drugs in his system.

It's kinda messed up that his title and his payout would be affected by diuretic drugs, but not illegal substances. I think the UFC is gonna come under pressure to amend that stance.

rockgremlin

Jon Jones continues his path of self destruction. Last week he was involved in a traffic accident where he fled the scene on foot, after leaving Marijuana and a loaded pipe in his rental car. One of the drivers of the vehicles he hit was a pregnant woman. He was later apprehended and charged with a felony hit and run. UFC president Dana White felt the best course of action is to strip Jones of his title and his belt indefinitely, opening the door for a new light heavyweight champion to take his place.

UFC 187 will pit Anthony Johnson against Daniel Cormier for the belt that used to be on Jon Jone's waist. Should be a good fight. Johnson is 19-4, with impressive victories over Orlovski and Gustafsson. And Cormier has never been taken down in his career (except for the Jon Jones fight). Johnson is more of a striker, and Cormier more of a wrestler. So it should be an interesting fight of differing styles.

So is Ronda Rousey just going to have to start fighting in the men's division or what? She routinely destroys all of her opponents, basically making a mockery of anyone intrepid enough to step into the ring with her. Is there no one on this planet capable of giving Rousey some form of competition?

Rhonda cleans up nice, I hope she win's as it would be good for the sport.

A Rousey fight has never gone to the scorecard and I don't see it happening this time either. Both fighters are aggressive and will push the pace. Nunes has a habit of tiring out in late rounds so the longer the fight goes the more it will favor Rousey. Also while Nunes has solid punching skills she relies on her wrestling to take the fight to the mat and finish off opponents and going to the mat with Rousey is not a good thing. If betting I'll take the odds and Rousey.

Which is the reason why I pointed out several posts ago that she needs to quit acting like a boxer. Her last two fights she completely ditched her bread and butter ground game and tried to go toe to toe with good boxers. And both times she got her ass kicked.

Judo and BJJ are Rousey's strengths. She sucks at boxing. Didn't they learn anything from the Holm fight? Apparently not:

Blasphemy!

There's still other fighters that are entertaining to watch -- like that "Korean Zombie" who looks like a prepubescent 12-yr-old boy, but who is an absolute ass kicker.

And I'm all in on the Amanda Nunez train. She's vicious, a legitimate champion, and is humble from humble beginnings. I got really sick and tired of watching Rousey's entitled, snotty attitude. Her pride got the better of her and she paid a steep price for it. It was a little satisfying to see her get the piss knocked out of her.

Anyone who watched the turdburger of a non-fight between Anthony "Rumble" Johnson and Daniel Cormier should demand their money back. After a lethargic first round, Johnson rolls over and lets D.C. choke him out without even an ounce of resistance. After the fight we learn that this was Johnson's retirement fight, and that he had no intention of winning and advancing his career in the UFC. He even told his friends and family not to come to the fight - because he was planning to lose.

I think that's called "throwing the fight."

I wonder how much cash Johnson made from betting against himself? And I wonder how DC can honestly walk away from that fight triumphant knowing the guy who was favored to beat him walked into the octagon planning to lose?

Iceaxe

We were all in complete agreement that this fight was thrown. If you go back and look at the replay, Johnson tapped even BEFORE DC had his arm wrapped around Johnson's neck.

The UFC will pick up again once Johnny Bones Jones comes back from suspension in July. The up and coming heavyweight fight between Miocic and Dos Santos will be a good one as well. I really like Miocic. He's just a regular guy. A firefighter from NYC who still fights fires and doesn't let his stardom go to his head.

Mayweather has been fighting 12-round fights for over a decade against the cream of the crop. McGregor just didn't have the experience nor the stamina to go 12 rounds...let alone 12 rounds with arguably the best lightweight boxer to ever step into the ring. McGregor ran out of gas. Pussy punches too. No power in his blows.

The ref saved him from the mat by calling it early. Otherwise he's on his back.

To Conor's credit, he is fighting the greatest defensive boxer of all time. So it's not like he tried to land his signature left for nine solid rounds.

He played right into Mayweather's hands - weather the early storm, draw Conor into deep water late in the fight, and then drop monster rights on him when he's gassed.

Could you guys see Mayweather keep turning his back to Conor all night, and that announcer with the high voice kept sticking up for Mayweather saying "He's not turning his back guys" and then the whole panel erupted and said "YES HE IS!!".

I don't think I heard much from that guy after that.

Yeah I did notice that. But that's how Mayweather fights. As soon as his opponent attacks he puts his arms up, ducks down low, and turns to the side. I've heard more than one person call that style of fighting "chicken shit."
