Switzerland's only recorded wild bear has been culled after fears that it could pose a threat to humans, the authorities announced on Wednesday.

The male bear, known as "M13", was shot dead by wildlife rangers on Tuesday, said Adrian Aeschlimann, spokesman for the Federal Office for the Environment.

"The cull was carried out according to the management plan for bears in Switzerland," he told AFP.

M13 lived in the mountainous Graubuenden region of eastern Switzerland, on the border with Italy, spending spring seasons in the Val Poschiavo.

The animal, which was around two years old, had repeatedly headed into inhabited areas to look for food and had even taken to following people.

In November 2012, the bear had already been considered problematic and placed on a behaviour-watch list, a step away from a cull order.

Before deciding they must kill the bear, Swiss rangers had attempted to increase its wariness of humans by firing rubber pellets and firecrackers.

M13 was the only survivor of a trio of cubs.

Its brothers, M12 and M14, died last year when they were hit by cars in Italy.

The three bears were part of a programme in Italy's Trentino Alto Adige region to reintroduce an animal long wiped out by hunters.

The population on the Italian side of the border is now around 30.

The Swiss took the decision to shoot M13 after consulting Italian wildlife protection authorities.

Environmental campaigners WWF hit out at the decision to shoot M13.

They said it was natural for a bear that woke up from hibernation to head into the valley to look for food, and that it would have returned to the mountains as the weather improved.

In addition, with increasing maturity, M13 would have been likely to return to Italy to look for a mate, they said.

Yeah, well...too many people and not enough space for the wild critters. The bottom line is, one human life, or even someone getting hurt, is not worth the right for these animals to exist.

Like lots of people, I love nature...but thinking that "something can/should be done is getting into the unicorn farting rainbows area. People will shake their heads and say "That's a terrible shame" but they will raise their fists in anger and rage is a child got eaten...or even scratched.

It's the way of the world...one day there won't be any bears in those mountains at all, ever.

I don't know...that's debatable. Depends on the person maybe. :haha:

I don't know...that's debatable. Depends on the person maybe. :haha:Actually, I don't think it's debatable at all...in every single instance of human/bear contact...no matter what happens to the human, the bear will ultimately lose...regardless of those who may say "Spare it"...there is no sparing the animal, ever. That's my point.

It's just too bad that we've encroached that far. I believe that as humans, the earth is our stewardship. Not something for us to control and do with as we see fit, exploit, and plunder. The bear story is just a story about humans failing to live in harmony.

To throw the red herring out there, at least the human population is excpected to top out around 9.5 billion. With most of that growth coming in 3rd world countries. However we will probably screw every human/nature encounter and destroy everything in our path by that time....

I'm kind of surprised to see this coming from a euro country. You would have thought they would have put more effort into relocation before pulling the trigger. Especially considering they were working with Italy to begin with.
